AIIMS eye surgeon addresses doctors

CHANDIGARH June 25 — The visiting eye surgeon from AIIMS, Dr Rasik Vajpayee, today stressed the need of learning safer techniques of phacoemulsification for early and sure visual rehabilitation of patients suffering from blindness due to cataract.

He was addressing a seminar on phacoemulsification under the aegis of Chandigarh Opthalmological Society (COS) at GMCH here . The seminar was inaugurated by Dr V.K. Kak, Principal of GMCH.

Chetna CC win tournament

CHANDIGARH June 25 — Chetna Cricket Club outplayed Godrej Cricket Club by three wickets in the final to win the fourth UT league cricket tournament, organised by the UT Cricket Association and concluded here this evening at sector 16 cricket stadium.

The match was delayed by two hours due to overnight rain. Chetna Club won the toss and opted to field first. Mr MM Puri, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University, gave away the prizes.

The best bowler of the tournament was Satish Chaudhary, best batsman was Munish Chadha, best wicket-keeper was Harminder Bawa and best all-rounder was Madan Lal. In today’s match, Dharamveer of Chetna club was declared the man of the match.

Brief scores — Godrej CC-108 all out in 34.3 overs (Madan Lal 37, Mohan Singh 19, Amit Bhardwaj 16, Munish 3 for 19, Dinesh Mongia 2 for 18, Harpreet Singh 2 for 24); Chetna XI-109 for seven in 33.4 overs (Dharamveer 41, Amit Bhardwaj 2 for 16, Harit Sharma 2 for 23).

Coaching camp

The Panchkula District Cricket Association has shortlisted 15 players for a week-long off season coaching camp, beginning tomorrow at Hansraj Public School, Sector 6, Panchkula. This was stated by Mr Sandeep Moudgil, Secretary of the association. The trials for the same were held today.

Mr Moudgil said these boys would be subjected to basic fundamentals of the game, like physical fitness, running between the wickets, fielding and other techniques required to improve the game. Cricketers of national fame who will impart training to these youngsters include Ubaid Kamal, Yoginder Bhandari, and Arun Sharma. A current Ranji player of Haryana Vineet Jain, will also provide tips, including physical conditioning aspects, to these boys. The players will also be provided with diet and other refreshments during this camp.

The players will also take part in a three-match series with DAV, Sector 8, Chandigarh Coaching Centre, for developing confidence level and match exposure. The players selected are Saurav Chopra, Aparshakti, Vivek Walia, Gaurav Chopra, Arvind Rawat, Vishal Goyal, Sukhwinder Singh, Varun Parmar, Pranav Saini, Shashank Bhardwaj, Prince Kaushal, Harjeet Bedi, Karan Sayal, Vidyut Kataria and Amarpreet.

Tennis tourney

The second PD Vashist memorial tennis championship will begin tomorrow at Lake Club courts. The championship has attracted more than 150 entries from the entire region. Mr AK Madan, Territory Manager Bharat Petroleum will inaugurate it. Matches in under-10, under-12, under-14, under-16 and under-18 sections will be held for boys, while for girls, except under-16 age group, the remaining categories are the same.
