Wholesale chemist shop sought
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, June 3 — The PGI Employees Union have appealed to voluntary organisations and NGO’s to open a wholesale chemist and druggist shop in the Nehru Hospital on no profit no loss basis.’’

In a release issued here, they stated that this would help the poor and the low-income group patients, and save 40 to 50 per cent expenditure on medical and surgical items. They pointed out that the cost of the medical treatment at the PGI had increased manifold in comparison with AIIMS, where there were no charges for laboratory and X-ray investigations, operations and other specialised procedures. Almost free treatment to the OPD and indoor general ward patients except charging for few special investigations like MRI, and CT scan, was provided at AIIMS.

They also pointed out how the auctioning of chemist shops at exorbitant monthly rents had led to the fleecing of poor patients. It had been alleged that these chemists and druggists had monopoly and they charged printed MRP. The imported medicines and surgical items were also being sold without print rates.

They suggested that a public interest litigation might also be filed under Articles 14 and 19 of the Constitution of India and directionsmight be sought for UOI to discontinue the charges at the PGI on the lines of AIIMS, Delhi. The unnecessary recruitment of doctors and staff during the last one decade was also a burden on the PGI exchequer. The salary bills of doctors and staff was about 70 per cent of the total annual budget.

‘Women’s cricket needs sponsorship’
By Arvind Katyal

CHANDIGARH, June 3 — Women’s cricket in India needs sponsorship at the bigger level to generate popularity’’, viewed Sudha Shah, former Indian all-rounder and off-spinner who served the nation for more than two decades. She was here at a camp for the Indian women cricketers, which began here yesterday at DAV Senior Secondary School, sector 8.

Sudha, who used to bat at one down position, hoped that the Indian team had the chances of winning the World Cup, to be held in November this year in New Zealand, where seven nations will vie for top honours.

Sudha took to active coaching of the Indian team in June 1999, when the team she coached performed well at the one-day series played with England.

Employed with Canara Bank, 41-year-old Sudha took to cricket in 1973 under the watchful eyes of coach Audhi Chetty at Chennai and so far she has played 33 test matches for India.

She said the women were playing in good form but the weak point was the running between the wickets, which they were hoping to get improved in these camps. She particularly praised Poornima Rao, Anjum Chopra, Anju Jain (wicket-keeper). The team has four wicket- keepers and besides Anju, Reshma, Arundhati and Gurdeep are also participating. On the question of few tournaments at home, Sudha said considering the amount of money involved in organising these, the number was adequate. At present, they have four zonals tournaments.

She said that have young as well as experienced players in their list of probables. Jhulen Goswami of Assam is the youngest player and shaping well as medium pacer. Poornima Rao at 32 has vast experience with her. She said physical instructor Sudhakar will be of great help to them and so will be Mr S.S. Bawa, the coach at the school.

She was of the view that national cricket academies on the line of men’s cricket might pave the way for increasing the popularity of women cricket, which is still struggling to make impact on the people’s mind. Sudha hoped that women cricket will also be started in Indian schools in near future.Back
