Sugar 'n' Spice


Cool it with....

AS the summers get hotter and hotter many of us find our appetites on the wane. All one seems to do or want to do is to drink water or anything cool and refreshing. There is nothing nicer than a cool drink to pick you up and revive you on a hot summers day. There are many drinks that are made in almost all homes but for those who are on the lookout for cooling beverages with a difference we have collated many drink recipes for you to ensure you will have a cool and refreshing summer.

Fruit coolade

Ingredients:

1 glass of fresh watermelon juice

1 tablespoon lemon juice freshly squeezed

½ teaspoon ginger juice

2 scoops of vanilla ice cream

Method:

Put all the ingredients in a blender and mix them well and serve chilled with ice cubes added if desired. All the juices though should be fresh especially the ginger juice to keep the flavour.

 

Pine orangeade

Ingredients:

3 oranges or 200 ml of orange juice unsweetened

200 ml of pineapple juice

½ cup of sugar

¼ cup of lemon juice

2, 200 ml bottles of plain soda water

Method:

Mix all the ingredients except the soda together and keep in the fridge. When you are ready to serve add in the soda water to the mixed juices and mix it up and serve immediately chilled.

Cucumber and mint drink

ingredients:

50 gms of peeled and chopped cucumber

1 tablespoon freshly chopped mint leaves

150 ml chilled milk

150 ml plain yoghurt

Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Method:

Put the peeled and chopped cucumber, chopped fresh mint and the milk in a blender and blend for a couple of seconds. Add in the yoghurt and the salt and pepper and give it a quick blend again. Serve chilled.

Tomato juice

ingredients:

12 medium sized ripe tomatoes chopped

120 ml or ½ cup of water

1 medium onion peeled and sliced

1 bay leaf

2 teaspoons salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1-teaspoon sugar

Method:

Place the tomatoes in a saucepan with the water, onion and bay leaf and cook for 15-20 minutes. Strain through a sieve and add in the seasoning of the salt and pepper, sugar and the Worcestershire sauce. Put it in the fridge to chill and serve with a garnish of fresh mint.

Satoo

A traditional Indian drink that is considered to be perfect on a hot summer day due to its cooling effect.

Ingredients:

30 gms of roasted satoo

The juice of half a lemon

½ a teaspoon of chilly powder

½ a teaspoon of roasted and ground cumin ½ teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper Rock salt (Kala namak) to taste

Method:

Stir the roasted satoo in a glass of cold water. Add in all the roasted and ground spices as well as the salt, lemon juice and the chilly powder. Mix well and serve.
