Cheering up kids with magic
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, May 27 — It was a magic show with a difference. In the audience at the Advanced Paediatric Centre auditorium at the PGI were 150-odd children admitted to the centre.

The programme, including an hour-long magic show, was aimed at bringing cheer to the children amidst their trauma while being admitted to the centre for their treatment.

The entire show was sponsored by Ms Pooja Krishan, a young mother herself, and a dedicated volunteer. She, otherwise, spends her Monday mornings with the children at the centre.

It was in 1998 that two friends — Munisha Gandhi and Ruchika Majithia — both young mothers, decided to do something different for the sick children at the newly commissioned Advanced Paediatric Centre.

Working under the guidance of Dr Lata Kumar, head of the department, and Dr R.K. Marwaha, along with a social worker, Mrs Sarkar, both Munisha and Ruchika helped to set up a playroom for the outpatient department filled with toys, games and swings collected from her friends and family.

Seeing the popularity of this playroom, she was encouraged to set up a second larger play centre for the patients admitted to the centre. Friends were mobilised to paint murals on the windows of the wards. Volunteers started to spend time with the children, playing games and doing puzzles, distributing colouring books, fruit etc., etc. on various occasions.

The entire project is met through donations received in cash and kind. Efforts are also being made to raise money for some poor and needy children who are hardpressed for resources.

Today’s programme made children not only cheerful and laughing but relaxed and happy also.Back

Housing plan for class III, IV employees
By Rajmeet Singh
Tribune News Service

SAS NAGAR, May 27 — Acting on a long-pending demand of housing for its employees, the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA) will now offer the low income group ( LIG) and middle income group (MIG) category houses to its class III and IV employees under a new housing scheme.

A decision in this regard was taken at a finance and accounts committee meeting of PUDA held recently.

The town will be the first place where the scheme is being offered to the employees. The department is planning to allot about 10 acres of land for the construction of around 450 three-storeyed flats in Sector 65-A here. An earlier housing scheme providing a reservation of 2 per cent of houses for its employees has been discontinued.

Sources in the department said to frame the new scheme, a committee comprising the Additional Chief Administrator ( headquarters), Additional Chief Administrator ( P and C), Chief Engineer and other PUDA officials had been formed. It is learnt that the class III employees would be offered the MIG category of houses and the class IV employees would be offered the LIG category of houses.

A survey conducted last year by the department at different stations showed that in case of SAS Nagar there were 460 applications. For urban estates of Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Bhatinda and Amritsar, the number of applications were 107, 74, 12 and 8, respectively.

The eligible employees have been divided into three categories. Those of the erstwhile Punjab Housing Development Board and now employees of PUDA are in the first category. Those belonging to urban estate department who were on deputation and had not been merged because of certain reservations and those employees who were serving on deputation from other departments have been put in the second and third category. While the class III employees would be entitled to a house building loan of Rs 7 lakh, the class IV employees with 10 years of service would get a maximum of Rs 6 lakh as house building loan.

An income criteria has been fixed for the employees. The applicants would have to pay an earnest money of Rs 10,000 for LIG house and Rs 20,000 for MIG houses.

Probe ordered into construction
Tribune News Service

SAS NAGAR, May 27 — The Minister of State for Housing and Urban Planning, Mr R.S. Balian, has ordered a time-bound probe by an independent agency into the construction of the Super MIG flats in Sector 70 here. The flats were constructed by the Engineering Wing of the Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA).

Recently, in a khula darbar, the residents had complained to the minister about the poor construction of the flats. The issue was discussed at a meeting of PUDA officials at Punjab Bhavan in Chandigarh yesterday. The minister also instructed the officials to review structure of the transfer-fee being charged from the occupants of these flats and bring it at par with the transfer-fee charged on plots.

Representatives of the residents who were present on the occasion, also sought construction of a community centre, development of green belts, repairs of roads, cleaning of the sewer and storm-water lines. The residents also raised the issue of enhanced prices of the independent MIG flats.

Meanwhile, the local unit of the Rashtriya Raksha Dal has protested against the minister holding khula darbar in Sector 70. It has alleged that this was done at the behest of a person who was contesting the forthcoming municipal elections from the area.
