Tourists want water sport in city CHANDIGARH, May 26 — The need for the creation of water-sport facilities, including that for river rafting, is felt by tourists who visit the city in the summer. Chandigarh is a transit point for most tourists going towards Shimla and beyond. They usually come from West Bengal, Gujarat, Maharashtra and UP. Then, there are those who come from the nearby states to spend vacations with relatives. Most of them want the creation of recreational facilities at places of tourist interest in the city like Sukhna Lake. Mr Rajesh is an NRI, originally from Ludhiana, who lives in Sweden now. He is visiting the city as his wife, Manu, belongs to this place. He said though boating, toy train and games at Sukhna Lake had impressed them, water sport could also be added to these. He said facilities for sport like waterpolo and river rafting in the city would attract foreign tourists. Mirant Parikh of Ahmedabad is also here with his family for a week. He said the Lake Club offered many facilities, but, was open to members only. He said the Gymkhana Club in Panchkula which had a swimming pool could also allow the guests to use the facility and charge them for it. Similar views were expressed by some tourists from Ghaziabad. They said it would have been better if the city had water-sport infrastructure as well, besides the boating facility at Sukhna Lake. Mr R.S. Awasthy, one of the tourists, said though the tourists had been told that a resort offered water sport 20 km from here, it was too far for them. Akhilesh Mishra and his three friends, students in Muzzafarpur, appreciated Rock Garden, the lake and the city's clean air. However, they said water sport was now an in thing. They said tourists now had to travel as far as Kulu for river rafting and water skiing. Balkar Singh and his family of Kurali near Ropar said the lake was beautiful, but, more facilities were needed here. His son Satkarpreet said he wished that places like Essel World and Water Kingdom were created in the city. |
