Health awareness drive from June 1

PANCHKULA, May 25 — About 60 lakh people in the age group of 15 and 49 years are expected to avail of the benefit of a fortnight-long statewide family health awareness campaign to be launched in Haryana on June 1 to educate people about reproductive tract infections (RTI) and sexual transmitted diseases (STD), besides providing treatment to affected people.

Stating this at a news conference today, the Health Commissioner, Mr Naresh Gulati, said that the campaign would be held in two phases as 10 districts would be covered in the first phase from June 1 to 8. The remaining nine districts would be covered from June 9 to 15.

Titles for Shivalik boys and girls

CHANDIGARH, May 25 — The hosts, Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, won both boys' and girls' titles on the concluding day of the Chandigarh Sub-Junior Ball Badminton Championship for the Santosh Rana Trophy here today.

Gurvinder Singh and Jagdeep Kaur, both of SPS-41, were declared the best players of the tournament.

In the boys' final, SPS-41 was pitted against Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 38 (west). In the first game, the SPS-41 team gave away only 12 points to the opponents. In the second game, they gave away only 14 points to win the best of three tie in straight games.

In the girls' section, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37, had to face SPS-41 team in the final. The SPS-41 girls won the first game with little resistance, conceding only 17 points. However, the second game was a close one which the GMSSS-37 team lost narrowly, 27-29.

The third and fourth places in the boys' section went to MDAV School, Sector 22, and Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, respectively. In the girls' section, the third and fourth places was won by Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, and Government High School, Sector 37, respectively.

Results of the league matches are as follows: Boys — SPS-41 b MDAV-22 (29-25, 29-16); GSSS-38 (w) b GMSSS-19 (29-19, 29-22); SPS-41 b GMSSS-19 (29-19, 29-22); SPS-41 b GMSSS-19 (29-27, 29-21); GSSS-38 (w) b MDAV-22 (29-18, 24-29, 29-19); MDAV-22 b GMSSS-19 (27-29, 29-28, 29-25); girls — GMSSS-37 b GMSSS-21 (29-10, 29-17).

Cricket tourney: Garhwal Cricket Club of Chandigarh will organise the fourth Uttrakhand Cricket Trophy-2000 from June 4 at Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 23. Cash prizes of Rs 2,100 and Rs 1,100 will be awarded to the winners and runners-up, respectively. Entries close on May 31 with Mr B.P. Gour at 2169, Sector 23-C.

Probables for National Games

CHANDIGARH, May 25 — The Punjab Golf Association has selected 20 golf probables for the XXXI National Games to be held in November this year. The probables comprise 12 men and eight women. Prominent among them are H.S. Kang, Gurbaaz Maan, Sandy Lehl, Suman Puri, Jassanjit Dullet, Irina Brar, Parneeta Grewal and Guneet Raikhy among others.

They will attend various coaching camps in June, August and October. Col B.S. Kahlon, Secretary of the PGA, said the emphasis would be on improving their physical fitness and mental robustness. The camps will be supervised by the state coach, Jessi Grewal, and national coach, Ajay Gupta.

Golf has been included in the National Games for the first time.

Administration shuffles officers

CHANDIGARH, May 25 — The Chandigarh Administration today ordered the following postings and transfers:

Mr Gurmel Singh, Chief General Manager, Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Development Corporation (CITCO), becomes Director Industries, General Manager of District Industries Centre ; Secretary, State Transport Authority; and Controller of Printing and Stationery.

Mr Prithi Chand, Managing Director, Chandigarh SC, BC and Women Welfare Corporation and Director Social Welfare, will be the new Subdivisional Magistrate (Central), Deputy Excise and Taxation Commissioner and Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development).

Mr P.S. Gill, Subdivisional Magistrate (Central), has been posted as Chief General Manager, CITCO.

Mr H.K. Nagpal, Secretary, Municipal Corporation and Deputy Excise and Taxation Commissioner, becomes Managing Director Chandigarh SC, BC and Women Welfare Corporation and Director, Social Welfare.

Mr R.K. Kaushik, General Manager, District Industries centre, Director Industries and Secretary, State Transport Authority, is the new General Manager, Super Bazar; Deputy Director, Food and Supplies and Joint Registrar, Cooperative Societies.

Mr Ashwani Kumar, General Manager, Super Bazar, becomes Additional Commissioner-II, Municipal Corporation. He will hold the additional charge of Secretary, Municipal Corporation.

Mr Ashok Vasistha, Assistant Commissioner-II, Municipal Corporation, and Assistant

Estate Officer (Appeals), becomes Assistant Commissioner-I, Municipal Corporation, and continue to hold the AEO (Appeals) charge.

Mr Ashok Sanghwan, Joint Secretary, Home and Vigilance, will also work as Director, Tourism.

Mr Vivek Attrey, Director, Information Technology, Information and Public Relations, will also be Director, Hospitality and Joint Secretary, Health.
