Iron grills welcome as road divider

The loss of freshly planted bougainvillea shrubs along some stretches of Madhya Marg and Dakshin Marg was recently reported in your paper. The reason ascribed to the loss is lack of after-care. Maintaining these shrubs on the road dividers is an impractical and a dangerous idea. It appears out of context in the present age to maintain such plants, which require labour-intensive upkeep. Plants demand frequent watering, manuring and hoeing to grow luxuriantly to be able to serve purposefully as hedges. Besides, once established, bougainvillea grows quite fast. It, therefore, constantly requires regular watering and trimming too. And as by nature it is thorny, if there is a delay in trimming it, its vagrant/ wanton branches pose a risk of slapping, especially two-wheeler drivers, on the face and in the eyes, causing grievous bodily harm and accidents. Trimmings of this shrub left scattered on the road after pruning pose the risk of bursting tyres and forcing commuters to lose control over their vehicles.

If the area needs a touch of green, then tall, slender trees like eucalyptus or poplars can be considered as possible candidates. Not only will they lend some greenery to the roads, but occupy less space sideways. These will also require little after-care, watering or trimming, and be comparatively safe for commuters.

The Chandigarh Administration recently undertook making Madhya Marg safer by erecting iron grills on the road divider from the railway bridge towards the sabzi mandi. May I suggest that the good work be extended along the full length of the road. It will be doing yeoman’s service to commuters along this route. Obviously, a number of accidents that occur during the rush hour, due to cycle-wallahs, rehri-wallahs, pedestrians and even a few scooterists foolish enough to dare sudden short-cuts across this road, will be definitely prevented.

Sector 20 park

THE Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh spent a large amount of money for the construction of a park in Sector 20, adjacent to Chatanya Gauria Math. It was a long-pending demand of Sector 20 residents, which has been fulfilled by the corporation.

The garden is nicely maintained and there is a good arrangement of seasonal flowers, which freshens up the visitors. Jhulas have also been provided for children to play.

But there is a drawback in this park. In the periphery of the park, no pucca pathway for morning and evening walkers has been constructed. People feel great inconvenience while walking not only during rainy season but also when the garden is watered.

The corporation should review its planning and for the better maintenance of the garden and for the convenience of the people, a pucca pathway should be immediately constructed.

Garden demolition

Apropos news item ‘HUDA destroys mini-cacti garden,’ published in Chandigarh Tribune. It was a heart-breaking and shocking news for environment-loving people.

It was, in fact, a unique collection of rare varieties by Mr Lal from his own resources. I have seen the garden. It had quite an inspiring collection.

The land on which the garden was established was lying idle, having no use for anybody nor did it create any hurdles to traffic or public.
