Lending Joy to music
By Dharam Pal

HIS romance with pop has created sensations like Baba Sehgal, Shubha Mudgal, Shweta Shetty, Daler Mehndi, Bhupi Chawla, Ali Haider, Hans Raj Hans, Hema Sardesai, Poornima and Shankar Shahney. And now Jawahar Wattal has thrown up a new challenge — the Mohali-born, 25-year-old Joy Jasbir. Music company Tips, which spotted this protege of Wattal, is all set to promote Joy in the world of Punjabi pop.

Joy Jasbir: A promising singerJoy promises to be entirely different from the rest of the singers on the pop scene today. Extremely focused, he has confidence in his "labour of love" as he defines his efforts in the realm of music.

A handsome young man, Joy was a well-known model before he decided to make music his career. He opted for a passion that he had nurtured since his childhood. He started performing in group song competitions when he was in the third standard. He did his schooling from Shivalik Public School, Chandigarh, and then went to Punjabi University, Patiala, for higher studies. He made his presence felt in various programmes sponsored by the Cultural Affairs Department, Punjab. He also assisted Prabhjot Bali, a gold medallist, in composing music for Shiv Kumar Batalvi’s lyrics and shabads.

Joy was adjudged Mr North '95 in Chandigarh and also received the 'best personality award' at the competition. He also participated in the national-level Reebok "Fit is Beautiful" modelling competition held at Siri Fort Auditorium, Delhi, in 1996. He was among the 20 candidates shortlisted from all over India. He was introduced to Jawahar Wattal at a modelling show in Delhi in 1995, and that was the beginning of a long association.

Joy Jasbir does riyaaz for four hours daily. He even writes lyrics and says with pride that his debut album will contain some meaningful and touching songs like "Veera kodi da te bhabi saadhi dhai lakh di...".

The music of Joy's debut album has been composed and directed by Wattal. Edwin A.J. Fernandes and Mehendra Kumar (Babloo), who have been part of Wattal’s music team for the past 10 years, have arranged the music.
