Summer timing of GMCH-32

CHANDIGARH, May 11 — The Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, will observe summer timing from May 16 to July 15.

According to a statement by the Medical Superintendent, the timings of the OPD will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the OPD registration from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Emergency services will, however, function round the clock, the statement added.Back

Harneet reaches final

CHANDIGARH, May 11 — Harneet Singh of Chandigarh beat Ardaman Sidhu, also of Chandigarh, 7-5, 6-4, in the under-14 section of the All-India Ranking Tennis Tournament in New Delhi today and reached the final.

In the other semi-final, Vivek Shaukin defeated Yuvraj Chaudhry of Chandigarh.

Players selected: Three city soccer players — Harish Kumar, Saurav and Narinder — have been selected for under-19 Indian youth team coaching camp at the SAI south centre in Bangalore to be held from May 15 to 20.

Further screening will be done for the second camp to be held from May 21 to June 10. The 28 probables include three from Punjab, five from Karnataka, three from Jammu and Kashmir, one from Andhra Pradesh, four from Kerala, two from the WIFA, one from Delhi and six from Goa.

PANCHKULA

Rohit, Saurabh shine: An unbeaten partnership of 94 runs between Rohit Saini (49 n.o) and Saurabh Dewan (39 n.o) helped Army School, Chandi Mandir, enter the final after beating Little Flower School, Panchkula, today, in the Inter-School Under-14 Cricket Tournament being organised by the District Panchkula Cricket Association at the Sector 5 ground in Panchkula.

Little Flower School won the toss and decided to bat first. The team scored 135 runs in the allotted 35 overs for the loss of 8 wickets. Vishesh Sharma (32) was the main scorer for the team. Dhaval Lakhi and Ankush got 2 wickets each.

In reply, Army School lost Dhaval Lekhi who had scored an unbeaten 155 yesterday, in the first over at the score only 2. Sunny Sharma who had made an unbeaten 140 yesterday, tried to keep the scoreboard moving, but could not do much.

At 22, he was clean bowled. After his dismissal, Rohit Saini and Saurabh played sensibly and achieved the target with five overs to spare. Karandeep claimed two wickets.

Brief Scores: Little Flower School — 135 runs for 8 wkts in 35 overs (Vishesh Saini 32, Saurabh Minhas 14 n.o.); Army School, Chandi Mandir — 139 runs for 4 wkts in 29.2 overs (Rohit Saini 49 n.o., Saurabh Dewan 39 n.o, Karandeep 2 for 28, Varundeep 1 for 8).

The final of the tournament is to be played on Sunday. The second semi-final of the tournament will be played tomorrow between Hansraj Public School (Sr) and DAV School Sector 11, Panchkula, at the same venue.Back

Drive against exposed food items

CHANDIGARH, May 11 — The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) has decided to intensify the drive against vendors and shopkeepers selling exposed food items and drinks.

This was decided at a meeting chaired by the Mayor, Ms Shanta Abhilashi, here today. The Commissioner, Mr M.P. Singh, the Chief Engineer, Mr Puranjit Singh, and the Medical Officer of Health, Dr S.S. Cheema, were among those who attended the meeting.

The Mayor asked the officials concerned to identify vulnerable spots used by the vendors for the sale of banned and unhygienic items and take the necessary steps to check the sale of the exposed food items.

Meanwhile, 75 vendors selling exposed items had been challaned and their items destroyed so far by the inspection teams of the health wing. Under the drive, which started on April 17, food articles weighing 4200 kg, kept for sale under unhygienic conditions in various localities, were destroyed by the squads of the corporation, according to a press note.

Committee chiefs: Mr Gian Chand Gupta (BJP) was today elected Chairman of the Roads Committee. Ms Ranjana Shahi (BJP) was elected the Chairperson of the Water Supply and Sewerage Disposal Committee.

While Ms Saudamini Bambah (nominated) would be the Deputy Chairperson of the Water Supply and Sewerage Disposal Committee, the Deputy Mayor, Mr Mohinder Singh (SAD), will be the new Deputy Chairman of the Roads Committee.

Notices sent: As many as 40 persons were sent notices today and warned verbally for violating the water supply bylaws by the civic body.

Strike: On a call by the Coordination Committee of Government and MC Employees and Workers, members of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation and the Public Health Workers Union went on a two-hour tool/pen-down strike in support of their demands.Back


 

New environment society head

CHANDIGARH, May 11 — Prof S.C. Jain of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Panjab University, has been unanimously elected President of the Environment Society of Chandigarh, according to a press release.

The society was founded on June 5, 1976, with Prof G.P. Sharma as the President and Mr S.K. Sharma as the Founder Secretary.Back
