Mr Yashwant SinhaNEW DELHI, May 3 — The Union Finance Minister, Mr Yashwant Sinha, today proposed a few changes in direct and indirect taxes, announced a number of customs measures to protect the domestic industry and exempted five items from CENVAT.

India rules out intervention
35,000 Lankan troops trapped

NEW DELHI, May 3 — India today ruled out military intervention in Sri Lanka and offered to extend “humanitarian assistance”. Talking to newspersons after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security held at 7 Race Course Road, the External Affairs Minister, Mr Jaswant Singh, said the Government of India would be guided in its response by its continued commitment to a peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict within the framework of a united Sri Lanka where all communities can realise their aspirations.

Sikh clergy to discuss issue on May 14

AMRITSAR, May 3 — The Sikh clergy will discuss the danger posed by RSS and the Rashtriya Sikh Sangat activities at its meeting scheduled for May 14 at Akal Takht. This assurance was given by Giani Joginder Singh, Jathedar, Akal Takht to a deputation of the Dal Khalsa, the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), and the Human Rights and Democracy Forum which met him at his residence, here today.
