CHANDIGARH, April 2 — Within hours of the conclusion of civic poll in the state, the Haryana Government today approved a number of fund-raising measures which would offset the impact of the populist step of abolition of octroi to a large extent.

CHANDIGARH, April 2 — The Haryana State Election Commissioner, Mr T.D. Jogpal, claimed here today that the civic poll in the State was held peacefully today barring one incident of booth-capturing in one of the wards of Gurgaon.

NEW DELHI, April 2 — In a landmark verdict, the Supreme Court has held that “Guru Granth Sahib”, the sacred book of the Sikhs, is a ‘’juristic person’’ and it can, therefore, hold and use the properties given to it in charity by its followers out of love.

Top militant shot dead
SRINAGAR, April 2 — A self-styled district commander of pro-Pak militant outfit, Tehreek-e-Jehad-e-Islami, was killed in a shootout with the security forces even as three militant hideouts were smashed in the Kashmir valley since last night, a defence spokesman said here today.
