Workshop on AIDS concludes

CHANDIGARH, March 30 — The three-day workshop for NGOs on targeted interventions, organised by the Punjab State AIDS Control Society with technical help from DFID (Department for International Development), British High Commission, New Delhi, concluded here this evening. The NGOs were called upon to play a cosntructive role to prevent the spread of AIDS.

Dr G.S Chahal, Additional Project Director, Punjab State AIDS Control Society, said that needs of various targeted groups will be taken care of during the second phase of the national AIDS control programme.

In the afternoon session, the promotion of condoms for the prevention of AIDS was highlighted. Participants were told as to how to motivate people to use condoms for safe sex in case someone has multiple sex partners. Proper use of condoms for the prevention of STDs was also highlighted. Community participation and community approach towards various social aspects for AIDS were discussed. Back

Triple joy for Nidhi

CHANDIGARH, March 30 — Nidhi stole the show by winning 100 m, 200 m and high-jump events at the annual sport meet of the Dev Samaj College of Education, Sector 36, which was held today on the college premises. The one-day meet was inaugurated by ace shooter and Commonwealth Games silver medallist, Manavjit Singh Sandhu, who is also an Arjuna Awardee. The chief guest inspected the march past. While speaking on the occasion, he said ''Sport is the betterment of one's own performance."

The guest of honour was Ms Sarla Sharma, Chairperson of the college. Ms Satinder Dhillon, Principal of the college, stressed the importance of sport in the allround development of one's personality.

Later, prizes were given by Dr Ajmer Singh, a former Director Sports and an Arjuna Awardee.

The results of the meet are as follows: 50 m race — Ramandeep 1, Rajani 2, Kiranjyot 3; 100 m race — Nidhi 1, Jyotikiran 2, Sonia 3; three legged race — Meenu and Indu 1, Harmeet and Navdeep 2, Sandeep and Sonia 3; discus throw — Ramandeep 1, Rajani 2, Kiranjyot 3; spoon race — Rajani 1, Nirmata 2, Komal 3.

Lake Cup tennis begins

CHANDIGARH, March 30 — The four-day ‘Lake Cup’ Open Junior Tennis Tournament was inaugurated here today at the Lake Club courts in Sector 6 by Mr Satish Chandra, IAS and MD of CITCO, who was also the chief guest. Nearly 100 players in the age groups Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16 both boys and girls, are taking part in this tournament.

Mr Chandra announced an enhancement in the scholarship money from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000, Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 for the top position holders and introduced Rs 500 for the third position holder. The seeds had a smooth sailing in the initial rounds.
