Six PU students get
prizes CHANDIGARH, March 11 Works of six students of the Chemistry Department of Panjab University were picked for prizes in the special category at the 13th annual national symposium here today. Prof B.M.Deb, chairman, introduced the subject while Prof Ashok Sahni, Dean University Instructions, inaugurated the symposium. Those awarded prizes in

students awarded CHANDIGARH, March 11 A total of 299 students were given prizes for excelling in various academic, cultural and sport activities at the 18th annual prize-giving function of Government College for Girls, Sector 42, here today. Five students were awarded roll of honour and five others were presented with college colours. While Shruti Mehta and Karuna Bala were awarded roll of honour for their outstanding performance in academics, Harpreet Kaur and Simrandeep Kaur got it for cultural activities and Gunveen for sport. The college colours for achievements in cultural activities were given to Harpreet, Simrandeep and Neelam while Harpreet and Neelam got it for sport. Besides this, 23 students received college mementoes and 22 got merit certificates. While 20 students got prizes for their performance in university exams, 219 others got special prizes for their performance in house examinations. Five students got Ms Baljit Kaur memorial scholarship award for excellence in Punjabi. Meanwhile, Sheetal Sharma, a final-year student, was declared the best hostel student of the year. The college Principal, Ms Mohini Sharma, read out the annual report. Mr Rajendra K Saboo, industrialist and Rotarian, gave away the prizes. Addressing the students, he congratulated them and exhorted them to continue with efforts to achieve excellence in all spheres of life. Mr Saboo emphasised the
need to have a goal and to strive hard to achieve the
same. He lamented the attitude of mediocrity that
prevailed among a majority of people in the country. He
also highlighted the importance of educating girls. |

A blend of dances worth
remembering CHANDIGARH, March 11 It was a fine Odissi and Kathak dance jugalbandi between Nibedita Mohapatra and Sudeshna Maulik this evening at the Bhaskar Rao auditorium of the Pracheen Kala Kendra, presented as part of its continuing baithak programme. The evening began with Devi Stuti. Sueshna Maulik is a disciple of Pt. Birju Maharaj, while Nibedita Mohapatra is a disciple of Aloka Panikar. The dancers emphasised intricate footwork and quick spins and sparkling movements. The jugalbandi was
accompanied by vocal support by Saroj Mohanty, Tufail
