Bypass to take more time SAS NAGAR, March 6 The Balongi bypass, which provides an alternative link to this township from the Chandigarh-Ludhiana highway, is likely to take more time before it becomes operational. It was scheduled to be completed before the monsoon this year. It will also serve as a direct link between Zirakpur-Patiala and Chandigarh-Ludhiana highways and will provide a link to the proposed railway station near Kambala village. Sources in the PUDA said work on the stretch, 1.04 km long and 100 feet wide, to near the local cremation ground was in progress but work on the a bridge on Patiala Ki Rao, estimated to cost about Rs 1.88 crore, was yet to start. Tenders for the proposed 116 m, seven-span bridge were invited recently. The stretch of road on
other side of the proposed bridge towards Balongi has
also not been completed. A visit to the site revealed
that only earth filling had been done. |
SAS Nagar
civic poll may be delayed SAS NAGAR, March 6 Elections to the SAS Nagar municipal council are likely to be delayed owing to a delay in finalising the delimitation of wards of the council. In a recent notification, the Punjab Government had omitted the name of the local municipal council from the list of the civic bodies' general elections to be held on May 28. The term of the local municipal council had expired two months back along with the municipal councils of Nangal, Dharamkot and Amloh. Sources in the Local Government Department said that in a notification of delimitation of wards issued by the department, certain unforeseen problems had surfaced. Almost all political parties, independent groups of municipal councillors and representatives of other local organisations had objected to the way in which the wards had been delimited. The demarcation of wards has been done in a confusing manner. For example, they have been earmarked on the basis of identification of certain houses instead of the house numbers. Certain councillors had sought that the wards reserved for women candidates should be rotated. Some residents had objected to the reservation of certain wards for SC and BC candidates and others to the population figures given by the government. The notification of the delimitation of wards was done after a board constituted by the Local Government Department to delimit the wards had sent its decisions to the higher authorities. The last date to file objections to the notification was December 17 last. But nothing has been heard from the government after it. Once the delimitation of wards is cleared, the government would write to the State Election Commissioner to take the steps for holding the elections under the Punjab Municipal Act, 1911. The Principal Secretary,
Local Government Department, Mr N. K. Arora, said the
elections to the SAS Nagar municipal council could not be
notified along with those to the other councils as some
rectification in the delimitation of wards was required.
He said efforts were being made to complete the exercise
of delimitation so that the elections could be held along
with that of the other councils. |
