Of smirks and splits...
By Madhur Mittal

IS it rseally over for the good-looking romantic couple — Akshay Kumar and Shilpa Shetty? Well, the gossip grapevine insists it is. Strange, ain’t it? I mean, just when everyone had accepted their relationship and the news of their (official) marriage was expected any day now... the two have suddenly decided to split.

Shilpa Shetty with Akshay KumarActually, rumours of Akki and Ships saying "Adios, amigo" had started making the proverbial rounds towards the fag end of’ 99 itself, but nobody took them too seriously since the lovebirds were still seen cooing together at fimland functions ... although they’d stopped arriving (and leaving) arm-in-arm. Well, Akki certainly tends to get linked with gorgeous gals (Raveena Tandon, Rekha, Twinkle Khanna) but apparently, this honcho isn’t quite ready to be ‘spousebroken’, yet......!

Rocky stuff

I must add that the season to have brought in some sort of an anti-affair virus, as more and more Bollywood romances are going on the rocks! The entire list would be rather ‘exhaustive’ (in more ways than one!) so I’II simply speak of the more important ones at this point in time, okay?

Well, there’s Tabu, to begin with. Looks like she and steady boyfriend, filmmaker Sajid Nadiadwala, got into an ‘unsteady’ situation which made them rock the boat! And then, Manisha Koirala, who evidently had enough of her DJ (that’s disc jockey, folks) — who’d always end up being surrounded ‘n’ sandwiched by young babes at the disco! And last, but definitely not the least, Sushmita Sen, no less... who has finally walked out on the loverboy, Sanjay Kapoor. Er...at least in Sush’s case, it’s been her ‘best’ performance, to date.

Courting the media

The film press was a surprised lot initially... soon the raised brows gave way to smirks of the "Yes, we understand" type when Shah Rukh Khan was found going out of his way to accost journalists from the print and the electronic media, in order to try and "clear the misconcept" that Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani was not faring well at the box office.

While his efforts have certainly yielded positive results by way of favourable pieces in many reputed publications and TV channels, I think the man ought to give more credit to the sense and judgement of the cinegoers in India for, it is they who really —and rightly — pronounce the final verdict of a movie being a hit or a flop. And no amount of "overseas accolades can change that ultimate fate, right?

A "timely" move

Guess you all won’t believe this, but Govinda has turned over a new leaf vis-a-vis his incorrigible habit of arriving late on the sets. I’m told by some of his co-stars that, nowadays, the perpetual latecomers is often reaching the studio even before the lightmen have had the time to fix up for the day’s first shot.

I join the tribe of innumerable people who’re shocked out of their skins! I mean, considering that Govinda is used to reporting for the 2 pm shoot shift only by evening (after the sun has set and the stars are out) this must surely be nothing short of utterly phenomena! In fact, it’s going to catch many Govinda’s filmmakers on the wrong foot. After all, one of the most dependable things about having Chi Chi in your films was that you could always relax! Heh.

Weighty matters

Rani Mukherjee has been trying very hard to lose weight. And sensibly so, because, with her height, she can hardly afford to let the lard pile on!

To her credit, I must admit that the girl has managed to lose quite a few kilos. But the real problem point is her legs. And, if she resorts to that chunky footwear with high, block heels... she looks as if she’s on ridiculous stilts!

So, she’s decided to go for the next best option: Refuse to reveal her bare legs for the time being!
