Colourful dances mark
Tibet Day CHANDIGARH, Jan 28 A colourful festival depicting the tradition, religion and culture of Tibet was held today at Sector 17 on the occasion of Tibet Day, organised by the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress and the Tibetan Freedom Movement, Chandigarh. The festival had on display resplendent Tibetan dresses, herbal medicines, books and photos. The food stall, selling popular Tibetan food like momos was one of the major attractions. A lively and entertaining programme was put up in the afternoon, in which Tibetan students presented many vibrant dances. Colour and gaiety was spread around by a mask dance called Tashi Shoelpa, a dance that is supposed to bring good luck, from which the first Tibetan opera has also originated. This was followed by Ba-Shey, a Tibetan dance. With 10 male dancers enthusiastically beating drums and dancing around, the next dance called the Dho was also a boisterous number. Next was the Yak dance, based on the Tibetan nomadic way of life. Earlier in the day, Lama Yeshi Phuntsok, President of the National Democratic Party of Tibet, and Mr Karma Choephell, Member Parliament of Tibetan Parliament in exile of the Assembly of Tibetan Peoples Deputees, spoke on the occasion. On the issue of Karmapa,
Mr Choephell said he was saddened by the fact that some
comments had been made from the Governments side
that asylum would not be granted to Karmapa. Lama
Phuntsok said that Karmapa should be given full support
here. |
Display of
latest winter wear CHANDIGARH, Jan 28 A fashion show organised by Dubloon here today proved to be a lacklustre affair. Only six female and six male models appeared for the performance. The ramp failed to give a distinct identity to the models. It was right in between two rows of spectators sitting around tables. The visitors and the restaurant staff took their seats well before the show. One of the biggest drawbacks at the show was faulty audio arrangement. Some persons objected to the announcer sitting on a table near the audio system with her back towards the audience. The sound level was rather low in the begining. At times, it was raised excessively. Unsuitable music only worsened the effect of the show. Music stopped during the rounds at times and went on even when there were no models on the ramp many times. In another scene, the show had to be stopped midway because the chief guest was to leave. The organisers paused to present him a bouquet. The female models included Ruhi Barua, Kritika, Lilian, Malika and Anamika. The males models were Rohit, Rupinder, A. Verma, Vikram Bhatia, Rohit Dheer and Rana. The dresses however were
a decent display of latest fashionwear. There was more
stress on the winter wear. Y2K, Fusion 2000 and
Far-Fetched were some rounds at the show among others. |
Art from
wood, silk CHANDIGARH, Jan 28 An exhibition of some 60 graphics by one artist in media ranging from wood-cuts to silk screens, has seldom been seen in the city before. Nirmal Parkash opened his exhibition at the gallery of Government College of Art, Sector 10, yesterday. The technical virtuosity of Nirmal Parkash, who is a teacher at the college, is discernable and what is remarkable is the kind of work that he has built up over 12 years, which this exhibition depicts. The Dog, a work done in silk screen, has the animal figure in black and white with red eyes, a relief print titled Force has images floating in black, grey and red with a white background. Another relief print titled Shiv, is also conspicuous with the kind of drifting images that merge around a shivling and the use of some interesting colours like orange, brown and black make this work quite picturesque. Nirmal exhibits images of fleeting contours and curves in some of his works, like Composition-A in mixed media and Under-Water, an etching print. |
