Heart clinic’s unique anniversary
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH Jan 20 — The Clinic and Heart Station, Sector 22, which has been providing varied advanced diagnostic services to the residents of the city, today celebrated its 20th anniversary in a unique way.

All the patients who visited the clinic today for consultation of tests were not only provided free services but also served sweets. “It was a pleasant surprise as they had not advertised about it,” said one of the patients who had come for a test. Dr G.P. Malik, consulting physician and cardiologist and the owner of the clinic, was nostalgic of the years gone by, especially when it was inaugurated on this day in 1980 by the then Chief Secretary, Haryana, Mr S.D. Bhambri. “Today is significant indeed for we have completed 20 years on January 20 and in the year 2000.”

He further said that the clinic which was initially started in 1980 as a simple clinical laboratory has now become a one stop station for all advanced heart investigations, including ECG, Tred Mill Test (TMT), Holter’s Monitoring and Echocardiography. Even the clinical laboratory is fully computerised. “It has been very satisfying to provide these services to the people of the city and surrounding areas and we have made a good headway in our practice also,” he said.

Before starting the clinic, Dr Malik had worked at the Department of Medicine, PGI, before moving to the General Hospital, Sector 16. Better monetary prospects coupled with a desire to give the people of the city the best in diagnostic services, I had decided to start the clinic. His wife, Dr Neelam Malik, a year back joined the clinic as a gynaecologist. She was earlier working at the Sector 22 Polyclinic. The clinic is also marked by clean and modern interiors.

Dr Malik lamented that competition due to mushrooming of diagnostic clinics had led to an unfortunate nexus between the doctors and these clinics, and the practice of clinic giving the doctors a cut for recommending their clinic. “The percentage of the cut varies from clinic to clinic and is just an attempt to outdo each other. However, the trend has recently crept into our field, but old-timers like us are still thriving on our regular clientele and the reputation we have built over the years,” he explained.

White Paper on MCC's finances demanded
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH Jan 20 — Major political parties, while criticising the water tariff hike and grant of telephone allowance to the councillors of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC), have demanded a White Paper on the financial status of the civic body.

At a meeting here today, the parties said the residents had every right to know the details of the funds and their utilisation. The Chandigarh Administration was receiving the same budget from the Centre as was received before the constitution of the corporation, and the corporation was not doing any additional works, apart from the works performed by the administration earlier. Hence there was no need for raising resources by imposing new taxes on residents, according to a press note.

The meeting was attended by Mr Shivi Jaiswal and Mr Devinder Singh Dhillon (Samajwadi Party), Mr Subhash Chawla (Congress), Mr Ajay Jagga (Janata Dal United), Mr Mata Ram Dhiman (BSP), Mr Ram Inder Singh and Mr Sohan Lal Bansal (CPI), Mr G.S. Palia and Mr N.S. Minhas (SAD), Mr J.S. Sawhney (AISAD) and Mr Rattan Singh Baghi (Janata Dal Secular).

They were of the opinion that there was no resource crunch with the civic body, as had been proved by the sanctioning of telephone allowance arrears amounting to about Rs 11 lakh to the councillors. The press note also demanded a clear-cut demarcation of works undertaken by the administration and the MCC for the convenience of the general public. Mr Ram Pal Hans has also flayed the MCC's decisions.

Demolitions flayed
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH Jan 20 — The demolition of the illegal alterations and additions by the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) in Sector 61 here yesterday has come in for severe criticism at the hands of residents.

The residents alleged that certain walls facing the stairs of House numbers Nos 431(A and B) and 441 (A and B), which had been erected for the safety of the houses from thefts, had been demolished without any notice.

Mr B.K. Gupta, a resident, alleged that the CHB was responsible for the defective design of not providing any measure for the safety of the first floor occupants.

Another resident, Mr Chanan Singh, claimed that as soon as the notices were received a request was made to the board not to demolish the structures till the finalisation of the building bylaws by the Chandigarh Administration. Overlooking the genuine demand of the residents the structures were pulled down and there is resentment among the residents.

He demanded the suspension of further demolitions.
