Six
children among 10 killed in fire NEW DELHI, Jan 2 Ten persons, including two women and six children, died in a fire which broke out in an electrical goods shop at Khureji in East Delhi early this morning. The fire, which broke out at around 0200 hours, spread rapidly to an adjoining polythene sheets shop and then to the adjoining tenements in which the victims were asleep, the police said. The gate leading to the tenements was locked, trapping the victims who tried to flee. The identity of those killed is not known yet. The exact cause of the fire is not known. Fire brigade sources said the victims were found dead when the fire tenders reached the site. One person was admitted to Swami Dayanand Hospital. The fire was first
reported at 0150 hours and three fire tenders fought the
fire for four hours. |
Write-up sparks violence in Blore BANGALORE, Jan 2 (PTI) The police lobbed teargas shells and charged with batons at a 300-strong mob belonging to a minority community which turned violent today protesting against an article in a newspaper that allegedly hurt their religious sentiments. The mob threw stones this evening in and around the office of The New Indian Express that had yesterday carried the article which the protesters alleged was provocative, derogatory and hurt their religious sentiments. City Police Commissioner T. Madiyal said seven to eight police personnel, including an Assistant Commissioner, were injured. Earlier in the morning, members of the community attacked and injured two press photographers who were covering their procession in Aanepalya area. Copies of the daily were burnt at a market near Shivaji Nagar. |
