Nitish's house attacked
PATNA, Sept 19 PTI The police fired several rounds
in the air to quell a violent mob which attacked the
Bakhtiyarpur residence of former Union Minister Nitish
Kumar during a protest demonstration against the killing
of a ruling RJD activist. Around 250 RJD workers
protesting against the killing of Om Singh attacked Mr
Nitish Kumar's house at Bakhtiyarpur, about 50 km from
here, and even made an abortive attempt to set his home
on fire. The irate mob, alleged that Om Singh's killers
had taken shelter in the house, the police said, adding
the minister was in Patna when the attack took place. 22 die in Thai factory
blast
CHIANG MAI, Sept 19 (AFP) At least 22 persons were
killed and around 100 injured today when an explosion
destroyed a Taiwanese-owned fruit factory in northern
Thailand, the police said. The blast ripped through a
longan processing plant in San Pa Tong, northern Chiang
Mai province, 700 km north of Bangkok today morning as 30
persons were working in the factory, the police said.
Bodies covered with sheets and charred equipment lay in
the devastated ruins of the factory which collapsed under
the force of the blast, witnesses said.

shot
KARACHI, Sept 19 (AP) Unidentified gunmen shot and
killed a Sunni Muslim cleric outside a mosque in the
southern city of Hyderabad early today, the police said.
Hafiz Mohmmad Idreess (50) a leader of the Jamiat
Ahl-e-Hadis, was shot dead by two gunmen as he left a
mosque in central Srayghat neighbourhood of Hyderabad,
120 km from here, a police official said on condition of
anonymity.

case
PUNE, Sept 19 (PTI) Two more persons were arrested
yesterday by the CID in Satara in connection with the
murder of NCP corporator Sharad Lewe, the police said
today. The two accused, Amar Bhande (25), from Guruwar
Peth and Moreshwar Chowkwale from Shaniwar Peth, were
produced in a court along with Vyankappa Hayyal (19),
from Sangam Mahuli and Bharat Sangade (23), from Godoli,
who were arrested on September 17, and were remanded to
police custody till tomorrow.

MOSCOW, Sept 19 (PTI) Russian security police FSB
has arrested a Pakistani national on charges of enrolling
youth for training in Islamic extremist centres in
Pakistan. His arrest follows suspected involvement of two
graduates of an Islamic religious school
"Iyulduz" (star) in terrorist bombings of
apartment buildings in Moscow. The two had reportedly
undergone military training in the camp of Jordan-born
Chechen warlord Khattab allegedly financed by Saudi
terrorist Osama Bin Laden.

BEIJING, Sept 19 (DPA) The Chinese police has
rounded up over 300 adherents of the banned Falungong
Meditation Sect in the past week in nine cities, a Hong
Kong-based human rights group said today. The police
detained sect members for practising the blend of
Buddhist,Taoist philosophy and martial arts exercise in
public areas in Dalian, Shenzang, Changsha, Nanachang,
Chongqing, Tianjin, Beijing, Wuhan and Shijiazhuang. A
woman adherent, who was among 10 persons detained in
Dalian, said the police bound her wrists and ankles with
a rusty chain and taped her mouth shut to prevent her
from practising Falungong while in detention.

acquitted
KARACHI, Sept 19 (AFP) An anti-terrorism court in
Pakistan has acquitted three suspects in the 1995 murder
of two US diplomats and dismissed the case for lack of
evidence, court sources said today. Judge Javed Alam said
yesterday that the accused Saulat Mirza, Arif Tutu and
Pervez Salman Haider, were liable to be cleared,
prosecutor Haq Nawaz Baloch said. The trio, belonging to
the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), have not been
released as they are wanted in other criminal cases, he
added. They were implicated in the killing of Jackie Van
Landingham and Gary Durrel of the US consulate in Karachi
on March 8, 1995.
