132 liquor bottles seized

Chandigarh, Sept 1 — The police has seized 132 bottles and 110 pouches of illicit liquor from various labour colonies of the city. While confiscation of liquor is a routine matter, the quantity recovered has reportedly increased since elections were announced, police sources said.

The police arrested Prem, a resident of Bapu Dham colony, and seized nine cases of whisky,besides 60 pouches of liquor from his residence in the colony.

Vijay, a resident of Madrasi colony, Bapu Dham, was also arrested for possessing two cases of whisky.

Cases under Section 61 - 1 -14 of the Excise Act have been registered at the Police Station East.

Mohan, a resident of the Sector 25 Janta Colony, was arrested and 50 pouches of liquor were seized from his residence. A case under Section 61 - 1 - 14 of the Excise Act has been registered at the Police Station West.

Arrested
Varinder Singh, a resident of Sector 20, was arrested while allegedly picking the pocket of a Kharar resident,Sanjay Sharma, at the Sector 17 ISBT. A case under Section 379 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 17 police station.

Eve-teasing
Anil Kumar, a resident of Sector 29, has been arrested for allegedly indulging in eve- teasing in the same sector. A case under Section 294 of the IPC, has been registered at the Industrial Area police station.

8 held
As many as eight persons have been arrested for roaming under suspicious circumstances in various parts of the city. Cases under Section 41 (2) \ 109 Cr PC have been registered at the Police Station East and Industrial Area.

1 held
The police has arrested Chander Pal, a resident of Dadu Majra colony and a proclaimed offender, who was wanted in connection with a case registered against him under sections 379, IPC, at the Police Station West in 1994.

Cheating case
The police has arrested Sanjeev Gupta and Gobind Mohan, proprietors of a Sector 35 company , who were wanted in connection with a case of cheating registered against them under Section 420 \ 120 - B of the IPC, at the Sector 31 police station.

Passi relinquishes charge

CHANDIGARH, Sept 1 — Dr I.B. S. Passi, Professor of Mathematics, relinquished charge of the office of Dean, University Instruction, Panjab University, today after completing a two-year term. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof M.M Puri, complimented Dr Passi for his wise counsel, firmness and commitment to the cause of academic excellence at a farewell function organised at the Panjab University campus here today.

Counselling
The Panjab University Students Union (PUSU) have demanded another counselling for the benefit of all those students who wish to seek admissions to the MA courses. A spokesman of PUSU, Mr Paramjit Singh, has in a release issued here pointed out that the last date for admissions to the B.Ed course is September 4, following which some seats in the MA courses will fall vacant. Hence, in order to fill those seats another counselling session should be organised .

Coop mess
The issue pertaining to the reopening of the co-operative mess in Boys Hostel No. 3 was resolved when following a meeting with PUSU representatives, the Dean, Students Welfare, Prof V.K Bansal, exempted the students from paying an advance of Rs 650 for starting the mess. In a release issued here today, the spokesman, Mr Paramjit Singh, has claimed that the DSW has directed the hostel staff to start the cooperative mess without any advance payment.

The DSW has also promised that he would look into the matter pertaining to the functioning of the Physics Department canteen,which offers substandard eatables and poor service.

Delegation
A delegation of the campus unit of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad apprised Mr K.L Sharma, the BJP candidate for the Chandigarh parliamentary seat, when they met him today. They also put forth their demands which include computerisation of the administrative block, improvement of hostel conditions, construction of new hostels etc. The Secretary of ABVP, Mr Harinder, has claimed that Mr Sharma assured the students that he would look into their demands once he was elected.

Prices of pulses stable

CHANDIGARH, Sept 1—The prices of pulses have remained stable in the local market during the past fortnight.

During a survey of the local market it was observed today that in spite of fluctuation in the prices of vegetables, there was no change in the price of pulses. A kg of moong sabat was available at the old price of Rs 26 a kg in retail and for Rs 22 a kg in the wholesale market. Similarly, one could buy dal moong for Rs 30 a kg in retail and for Rs 26 a kg in the wholesale market, while moong chilika was priced at Rs 29 a kg and Rs 25 a kg in the retail and wholesale markets, respectively.

Dal chana and kala chana were also available at the old price of Rs 18 a kg in retail and for Rs 15.50 a kg in the wholesale market. And if one is in the mood to relish rajmah, one could do so by spending Rs 36 for a kg of the commodity. In the wholesale market it was priced at Rs 32 a kg.

There was no change in the price of kala masur and malika masar as one could purchase these for Rs 28 a kg in retail and for Rs 24 a kg in the wholesale market. White chana was priced at Rs 36 a kg in retail and for Rs 32 a kg in the wholesale markets. Roungi could be had for Rs 36 a kg in retail and for Rs 32 a kg in the wholesale market. Arhar was also available at its old price of Rs 32 a kg in retail and Rs 28 a kg in the wholesale market.

Mah sabat was priced at Rs 28 a kg in retail and Rs 24 a kg in the wholesale market, while dal mah could be purchased for Rs 30 a kg in retail and for Rs 27 a kg in the wholesale market. Mah chilika was priced at Rs 29 a kg in retail and Rs 26 a kg in the wholesale market.

According to traders, the prices of pulses were stable as there was no increase in demand. "Actually, the prices will start going up after Divali , as with the onset of winter the demand for pulses rises every year," a trader said.Back

 


Audit, Youngsters in goalless draw

Chandigarh, Sept 1 — The teams of Audit Haryana and Youngsters club played a goalless draw at Football stadium, sector 17, on the second day of the Chandigarh Super league Soccer tournament here today.

a move in the 5th minute by defending champions Youngsters club was futile. In a counter move, Surinder failed to score in the 10th minute on a pass by Rakesh sharma.

A chance was also wasted by Rajesh Sharma of Audit Haryana. In the first half, Youngsters club dominated the game. In the second half, Sachin of Youngsters club was shown the yellow card in the 38th minute.

Volleyball tourney

The 13th Chandigarh sub-Junior Volleyball championship for Shivalik trophy (boys and girls) will be held on September 18 and 19 at Shivalik Public School, sector 41. Players born on or after January 1, 1984, are eligible to participate.

The Chandigarh boys and girls teams will be selected during the championship. These teams will participate in the 22nd Sub-Junior National Volleyball championship, to be held at Chandrapur in Maharashtra from October 6 to 10. A 15-day coaching camp will also be organised for the teams.

GSSs-15, SPs-41 win

Government Senior Secondary school, sector 15, and Shivalik Public school, sector 41, surged ahead in the Shivalik trophy football for under-14 boys when they scored victories over KVS, sector 29, and Guru Teg Bahadur Public School, sector 15, respectively. The scores were 2-0 and 6-4.

In the first match between GSSS-15 and KVS-29, Naginder Thakur and Chander Bhan scored one goal each for the winners. In the second match between SPS-41 and GTBPS-15, Ashwani and Gurdeep scored one goal each in first half for GTBPS, while Sahil Mehta and Harsimran scored one goal each for SPS in the second half. The teams were tied at 2-2 at the end of the stipulated period.

Now the tie-breaker was applied. For SPS, Bhupinder, Gagan, Harsimran and Pardeep scored one goal each. Navtej and Gagandeep scored one each for the losers.Back
