AMRITSAR
Workshop:
The third workshop on ‘‘Role of Networking in Scientific Information Processing’’, sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology, under the aegis of Ministry of Science and Technology, will be organised by the Distributed Informatics Sub-Centre (DISC); of Guru Nanak Dev University, at the conference hall of Guru Nanak Bhavan (university campus) here on Thursday.

GURDASPUR
Paddy arrival:
The district has received 35,4705 metric tonnes of paddy till Monday, which is 32 per cent more than those received last year. According to the Deputy Commissioner, Mr S.K. Sandhu, the rice millers have purchased 34,5361 metric tonnes of paddy, so far.

Robbers arrested: The police has arrested two youths for snatching a purse of a woman here on October 23. According to Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP, the robbers have been identified as Sanjiv Kumar, alias Kaka, and Raj Kumar, alias Rikku, of the district and the purse containing Rs 1750 has been recovered from them. A case has been registered against the accused.

JALANDHAR
Fashion show:
A fashion show was organised by a jeans company in collaboration with the Institute of Fashion Management (IFM) at Lilly Resort here on Monday. The Director of the IFM, Mr Umanga Oberoi, was the chief guest. Models like Shivani Talwar, Raman Nagra, Monika, Samita, Mallone, Romi and others participated in the show.

KAPURTHALA
Polio drops:
As many as 2,000 children were given pulse polio drops in a three-day camp that concluded at the Rail Coach Factory here on Wednesday. The president of the Rail Coach Factory Women’s Welfare Organisation, Mrs Sushma Ojha, had inaugurated the camp by administering polio drops to the children. A mobile van was also pressed into service to cover nearby villages under the programme.

LUDHIANA
Animal welfare camp:
The Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry extension, Punjab Agricultural University, organised an animal welfare camp at Dhilwan Bet village (Kapurthala) in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kapurthala, on Monday. As many as 126 animals were treated on the occasion.

Symposium: The 14th annual convention of the India Association of Veterinary Anatomists (IAVA) was held at Punjab Agricultural University here on Wednesday. Various aspects of veterinary anatomy were discussed in the symposium. The Deputy Director-General, of the ICAR (Animal Science), Dr Kiran Singh was the chief guest while Dr G.S. Kalkat, Vice-Chancellor, PAU, presided over the symposium.

Youth festival: The 11th Dr S.N. Kakkar Memorial Youth Festival will be held at Punjab Agricultural University from November 4 to 6. A meeting to finalise the arrangements for the festival was held here on Monday under the chairmanship of Dr M.S. Bajwa, Director, Students' Welfare and Dean, Postgraduate Studies.

Harassment:
People bringing bottles of the Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) from Ludhiana and other places said here on Monday that they were being harassed by officials of the Excise and Taxation Department, even though they had valid permits for the import of these bottles. They were asked to report in the police station the reason behind its purchase from outside the district. They asked the authorities to look into the matter so that innocent persons were not harassed by the officials.

NAWANSHAHR
Seminar:
A district-level farmers training camp for rabi crops and a seminar on oil seeds crops will be organised at K.C. Palace here on Friday. The Chief Agriculture Officer, Dr Ajmer Singh Kooner, said here on Monday that the State Agriculture Minister, Mr Ajit Singh Kohar, will preside over the seminar.

Member:
The Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Mr Charanjit Singh Atwal, who recently become an executive member of the Commonwealth Parliamentarians Association (CPA) and Asia region member of its sub-committee on planning and programme disclosed here on Monday that he would soon visit Brazil and the USA. Mr Atwal desired that the recommendations put forward at the Delhi Speakers Conference should be implemented to improve the quality of legislative work and parliamentary functioning. Measures should be taken to weed out persons with criminal background, prescribe minimum qualifications and give training to MLAs, MPs besides plugging out the loopholes in present anti-defection law, he added.

Conference:
Five prominent physicians of the region were honoured in the first annual conference of the Chapter of Association of Physicians (North Zone) held at Government Medical College here on Saturday. The organising chairperson of the chapter, Dr Kamaljit Kaur said it had been organised to fulfil the academic and scientific needs of the physicians in this part of the country.

Office-bearers: The following have been elected office-bearers of the North Zone Forensic Science Association: president - Mr Vikram Raj Singh Chauhan; secretary- Mr Inderjit Singh; and treasurer - Mr Balbir Singh Batth.top

Postponed: The forthcoming seminars on 'public-private partnership in housing and urban development' and 'housing finance' to be held here on Friday have been postponed in view of the unscheduled visit of the CMD of HUDCO, Mr V. Suresh, to Manila at the invitation of the Asian Development Bank.

Clarification: Apropos to the news-item published in these columns on Tuesday under the headline 'Reinstatement of manager decried', the CITCO Managing Director, Mr Satish Chandra, has said that the matters regarding postings and transfers, including suspensions and reinstatements are routine administrative jobs and such decisions are taken by the competent authority on merits. The union had no reason to object to such issues, he said. Meanwhile, about 40 CITCO workers, in a signed statement, have claimed that no resolution condemning the reinstatement of Mr Anurag Walia was passed at the executive meeting of the union.

Physiotherapy centre:
A physiotherapy centre would soon be established at the government dispensary in Phase V here. Disclosing this, the President of the House Owners Welfare Association, Mr Albel Singh Shyam, said the centre would be set up with assistance from the government and through voluntary donations.

Annual function:
The chairman of Chaman Vatika School, Mr Rajinder Nath, said here on Tuesday that the school would organise its annual function on October 30. The Minister of State for Home, Mr I.D. Swami, will be the chief guest, while the function will be presided over by Mr S.D. Bhambri, GM, The Tribune Group of Newspapers.

HISAR
Died:
Shakuntla Aggarwal (42), wife of Mr Amar Kumar Aggarwal, Editor, Shakti Times, died here on Monday. She was suffering from cancer.

Found: Two minor girls, Sonu and Krishna, who had disappeared under mysterious circumstances on October 19 from Hansi were found by the police on Monday. According to police sources, both girls were found near the Hansi railway station. Mukesh of Hisar and Rajender, alias Billu, of Sajarwas (Dadri) were arrested in this connection and a case has been registered against them.

PANIPAT
Killed:
Ram Krishan Gulati of the local tehsil camp was crushed to death by a truck on Monday. The accident occurred somewhere between the PWD Rest House and a tourist complex on the G.T. Road. The driver, however, managed to escape. A case has been registered.

Paid: On the directives of the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Sandeep Garg, the City Magistrate and the District Food and Supplies Controller conducted a raid on a local gas agency following complaints of overcharging while distributing new gas connection and hot plate to the consumers under the new policy of the Central Government. A case was registered against the gas agency under the Essential Commodities Act and under IPC 420 of the IPC, on Monday.

Team constituted: Following directives from the high court the district administration has constituted six teams to check the plying of unauthorised vehicles on different routes of the district. The Sub Divisional Magistrate, the General Manager of the Haryana Roadways, the District Development and Panchayat Officer, the tehsildar of Israna and Samalkha and the naib-tehsildar had been appointed as duty magistrates for the purpose. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Sandeep Garg, said 44 unauthorised vehicles had been challaned till Monday.

SIRSA
PWD workers:
Members of the Haryana PWD Workers Union staged a dharna in front of the office of the Superintending Engineer of the Public Health Department, here on Monday. The vice-president of the union, Mr Sohan Singh Randhawa, demanded recruitment of more workers in the department.

Arrested: Gora Singh, Kara Singh, Mander Singh and his son Badal Singh of Hassu village were arrested on Monday. A case was registered against the accused on a complaint of Surneet Singh of the same village. The accused had assaulted the victim under the influence of liquor on October 18.

SONEPAT
Two killed:
Suraj Bhan and Dhan Singh of Raipur village were killed on the spot when they were hit by a vehicle on the G.T. Road near Bahalgarh Chowk, 15 km from here, on Wednesday. A case has been registered.

Killed: Santara Devi was killed on the spot and her husband Shiv Kumar sustained burn injuries when a stove burst in their house at Kot Mohalla here on Tuesday. Shiv Kumar has been referred to a hospital in Delhi for treatment.

Suicide: Nirmala, 24, was reported to have committed suicide by taking insecticide tablets in her house at Krewri village, near here, on Tuesday.

YAMUNANAGAR
UN Day:
The local Lions Club celebrated the UN Day by organising a free medical check-up camp at DAV High School at Jagadhri on Monday. As many as 500 children were examined and medicines distributed free of cost.

Voltage problem:
Ms Shyama Sharma, Vice-Chairperson, Himachal Planning Board while presiding over a grievances redressal committee meeting here on Monday said low voltage problem of Dhartidhar area and Bagthan electrical sub-division would soon be solved. Voltage problem in the Paonta area had already been solved with the installation of powerful transformers, she added.
