3 killed as jeep, trolley collide

PANCHKULA, Oct 23 — Three persons travelling in a jeep were killed on the spot when their vehicle collided with a tractor-trolley late last night on the Panchkula-Raipur Rani road near Kehri village. Seven more persons were injured in the accident.

Two of the deceased are Anup Singh and Sanjay Kumar of Nariangarh, while the identity of the third person is yet to be established. The jeep (HR-04-GA-0119) collided with the tractor-trolley (HR-04-2134) head on. Four of the injured have been admitted to the PGI, two have been admitted to General Hospital in Sector 6 of Panchkula, while the last of the injured has been taken to the Raipur Rani hospital. A case under Section 340-A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered.

Suicide: A resident of Sector 41-A reportedly committed suicide last night. According to police sources, Narinder Kaur was found hanging by a cord from a hook, fixed to the roof, by Tejinder Singh, her brother, when he returned from his clinic at Dadu Majra.

He said he came home at about 9 p.m. with his brother and found that the door had been locked from outside. They opened the door and saw Narinder Kaur hanging while Gurjinder Kaur, his sister, who is mentally unsound, was sitting on the floor nearby

The police was informed and it was found that the body bore strangulation marks. She had reportedly been murdered as Gurjinder Kaur could not answer any of their queries.

The post mortem was done today and the body was handed over to her relatives. A case under Section 302 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 39 police station.

Liquor seized: The police has arrested Kulwinder Singh of Otala village in Ludhiana for possessing 120 bottles of liquor. He was stopped at a naka near the Canara Bank in Sector 34 and the search of his jeep (PB-10-B-9654) yielded the liquor. The vehicle has been impounded. A case under Section 61-1-14 of the Excise Act has been registered at the Sector 34 police station.

Cyclist injured: A cyclist, Hira Lal, was injured by a truck (PB-12-A-9873) on the dividing road of Sectors 45 and 46. The truck driver fled from the scene. The injured has been admitted to the PGI. A case under Sections 279 and 337 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 34 police station.

Nigerian held: In a joint operation by the local police and the CIA wing of the district police, a Nigerian national has been arrested for allegedly selling contraband in Phase IV here on Wednesday. According to the information available, at least 40 g of smack, worth Rs 4 lakh, was seized from the suspect, a resident of Phase II, who had the contraband in a packet. A case under Section 21\61\85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against him.

Kidnapper booked: A resident of Kansal village has been booked by the police for allegedly kidnapping and outraging the modesty of a five-year-old girl. The child had gone to the suspect, Kuldeep Singh, for purchasing milk.

The suspect took the girl to an isolated place outside the village and tried to outrage her modesty but gave up after she started crying. The Nayagaon police has registered a case under Sections 354, 363 and 506 of the IPC on the basis of a complaint lodged by the father of the victim, Paramjit Singh.Back

Vegetables stable despite stir

CHANDIGARH, Oct 23 — There has been no major fluctuation in the prices of commonly used vegetables in the local market during the past 24 hours.

During a survey of the local market it was found that if a kg of the local variety of potato was priced at Rs 5 yesterday, it remained unchanged today. The vegetable was available in the wholesale market for Rs 20 per 5 kg. The retail price of the pahari variety of the vegetable varied in different sector markets between Rs 10 and Rs 12 a kg.

Similarly, a kg of peas was available between Rs 30 and Rs 40 in the retail and between Rs 130 and Rs 170 per 5 kg in the wholesale market despite little arrivals from Himachal Pradesh due to the truckers' strike.

There was a slight hike in the price of cauliflower as in place of Rs 12 it was priced at Rs 14 a kg today. The wholesale price of the vegetable has increased from Rs 50 to Rs 55 per 5 kg. Tori was priced at its old rate of Rs 10 a kg in the retail and for Rs 40 per 5 kg in the wholesale market.

A kg of cucumber could be had for Rs 14 in the retail and for Rs 55 per 5 kg in the wholesale market. The price of the vegetable revolved around Rs 10 a kg during the past week.

The price of beans has rather dipped. A kg of the vegetable was priced at Rs 14 in the retail and Rs 55 per 5 kg in wholesale market. Beans were priced at 20 a kg during the past week. A kg of lemon was available for Rs 40 a kg in the retail and for Rs 160 per 5 kg.

Gourd as usual was available today for Rs 10 a kg in the retail and for Rs 40 per 5 kg in the wholesale market. Radish was priced at Rs 5 a kg in the retail market. Garlic was available for Rs 50 a kg in the retail and for Rs 200 per 5 kg in the wholesale market.Back



 


GMHS-26 lift volleyball title

CHANDIGARH, Oct 23 — Government Model High School, Sector 26, won the girls under-14 volleyball title in the UT inter-school volleyball championship which concluded at Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, here today. In the final, they got the better of Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, 26-14, 25-14, 25-18.

In basketball (under-14), GMHS-26 will face SPS-41 in the final. In the semi-finals, SPS-41 beat GGSSS-8 16-13 and GMHS-26 defeated Sacred Heart-26 18-7. In under-17 section semi-final, IS Dev Samaj Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, defeated GGSSS-8 26-6.

GHS-7 triumph: In UT inter-school kabaddi, Government High School, Sector 7, defeated GSSS-Dhanas 35-27 to win the under-14 title. In under-17 section, GSSS-Dhanas bagged the title by defeating GHS-11 53-25.

The under-19 title went to GSSS-Dhanas, who got the better of GGSSS-8 44-20. The third place in under-14 section went to GHS-40, in under-17 section to GHS-22 and in under-19 section to GSSS-20.

St John's in semis: St John's School, Sector 26, YPS, SAS Nagar, St Kabir School, Sector 26, and St Anne's School, Sector 32, entered the semi-finals of the under-12 section of the Blessed Edmund Rice cricket tournament being played at St John's School. Results of today's matches were —

First match: St John's beat Stepping Stones School, Sector 38, by ten wickets. Brief scores — SS-38 54 all out in 20.1 overs (Nikhil 15 n.o., Kritarth Jain 3 for 9, Vinayak Bahl 3 for 4, Ashish Kapoor 2 for 10); St John's 55 for no loss in 4.1 overs (Nalin Chopra 30 n.o.,Amrinder Pal 10 n.o.).

HFC beat HWC: Haryana Financial Corporation defeated Haryana Warehousing Coroporation by 27 runs in the inter-corporation league cricket tournament being played at Cricket Stadium, Sector 16. V.S. Rawat scored 26 not out and bagged four wickets for 11 runs.

Gymnastics meet: Kamalpreet of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, won three events, ribbon, rope and hoop, and was declared best gymnast on the second day of the Chandigarh gymnastics championship being held at Shivalik Public School, Sector 41. Kalpana of St Stephen's School, Sector 45, secured the first position in the vaulting horse and balancing beam events and was declared best gymnast. Pinky of SD Junior Model School, Sector 8, got the first position in floor exercises.

In junior boys section, Chetan of Government Model Middle School, Sector 20, was declared winner in floor exercises, horizontal bar, pommel horse and parallel bars and was declared best gymnast. In senior girls section, Devinder Kaur, who won first position in rope and hoop in rhythmic gymnastics, was declared best gymnast. Three ITBP gymnasts were declared best gymnasts in various events yesterday.

Kabaddi trials: Trials to select the Chandigarh junior kabaddi team will be held on October 29 at 4 pm at Kabaddi Coaching Centre, Sector 42, according to Mr Harjinder Singh, Joint Secretary of the Chandigarh Kabaddi Association. The team will take part in the Junior National kabaddi championship to be held at Jaipur.

Tourney postponed: The Chandigarh Open yoga championship has been postponed and will now be held from November 11 to 14 at the Government Yoga Centre, Sector 23. Entries close on November 5.

Junior handball: DAV College Club, Sector 10, and GGS College Club, Sector 26, clinched the junior titles in boys and girls sections, respectively, in the Chandigarh junior state handball championship which concluded at DAVSSS-8. In the boys' final, DAV College downed DAVSSS-8 29-21. In girls' final, GGS College trounced SGGS-35 17-2. Third place went to Chandigarh Handball Club, Sector 23, who beat GMSSS-21 16-6.Back



GHS-32 emerge champs

CHANDIGARH, Oct 23 — Government High School, Sector 32, overpowered Guru Harkishan School, Sector 40, by one turn and 13 points in the final of the under-17 section of the UT inter-school kho-kho tournament for girls, which was held at SGGSS-35 here today. Third place went to Government High School, Sector 35, who defeated Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 45 by four points. GHS-32 reached the final of under-14 section when they beat Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, by 17 points in the semi-final.

Girls’ handball: In the under-14 girls handball championship held at GMSSS-23, SGSSS-35 defeated Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, 10-3 and third place went to GGSSS-8. In under-17 final, GGSSS-8 outplayed GMSSS-21 9-0 and third place went to GGSSS-20.

SPS-44 win: In the UT inter-school football championship for boys, Sanjay Public School, Sector 44, defeated St Stephen's School, Sector 45, 4-3 via tie-breaker. Both teams failed to score in the stipulated period. Davinderjit, Vinay, Chetan and Deepak scored one goal each for the winners.

Judo championship: Both boys and girls events were held on the second day of the Chandigarh judo championship being held at SGHMS-38. Results of today's events were —
