Function: A cultural programme "
Swagat-99" will be organised here on
Wednesday at Dashmesh auditorium of the
university under the aegis of the Dean Students
Welfare and the cultural committee of Guru Nanak
Dev University. According to the Dean Students
Welfare, Dr B S Ghuman, the Vice-Chancellor, Dr H

Eye Camp: As many as 800 eye patients were
examined at a four-day camp organised by the
Lions Club which concluded here on Tuesday.
Presiding over the function, Mr Darshan Singh
Sandhu, SDM, said the District Blindness Control
Society had set up an eye bank for the needy.

Buses impounded: On a directive given by the
Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, the
District Transport Officer, Mr M.S. Jaggi, has
impounded more than 30 buses which have been
running without valid permits. Meanwhile, various
police stations of the district have been flooded
with private buses impounded by the DTO as their
owners have not paid penalties.
GURDASPUR
Two killed: Two persons died in a collision
between a bus and a scooter near a barrier on the
GT Road, 4 km from here, on Tuesday. The deceased
have been identified as Dalip Singh (68) and his
grandson Karanwinder Singh (10), both residents
of the local Sant Nagar.
Arrested: The
police on Monday arrested Vipan Kumar, a
proprietor of gas a agency in the Malhotra
Shopping Complex, Pathankot, for issuing fake
transfer vouchers of Lakshmi Gas Agency and Burma
Gas agency both located at Itava in Uttar Pradesh
to persons goings on transfers for gas
connections at their new places of posting. The
other two suspects, Surinder Pal Singh and
Chander Kant Kushwaha, are still at large.
HOSHIARPUR
Resentment: Members of the district unit of
the Indian Telecommunication Service Association
at a meeting held here on Tuesday opposed the
tradition of appointing the Chairman of the
Telecom Commission of India from the IAS cadre.
They expressed resentment against the appointment
of Mr Vinod Vaish as Secretary of the newly
created Department of Telecom Services.
Price hike: The
office-bearers of the District Legal Cell of the
Youth Congress have condemned the recent hike in
the prices of petroleum products by the state and
the central government. At a meeting held here
under the chairmanship of Mr Mandeep Sharma on
Monday, the governments were urged to withdraw
the decision. They pointed out that it would also
increase the prices of all the commodities which
would affect the common man.

Conference: The 36th classical music
conference will be organised by the local Sangeet
Kala Manch at Guru Nanak Dev District Library on
October 24. The General Secretary of the Manch,
Dr Joginder Bawara said here on Tuesday that
artistes from all over India would take part.
Mishaps:Rickshawpuller
Ranjit Singh (32) was run over and killed by a
train at Surranussi level-crossing when he was
driving the vehicle on the track on Sunday, the
police here said. A Bihari migrant Rajan Sareen,
(19) was electrocuted when he tripped over a
tubewell wire at the farmhouse of Darbara Singh
at Hardeep Nagar on the Jalandhar-Hoshiarpur road
while feeding cattle there on Monday.

Play staged: The founders day celebrations of
Kundan Vidya Mandir culminated here on Sunday.
The students staged a play," Ali Baba 40
Chor" on the occasion. The Commissioner of
the Municipal Corporation, Mr S.S. Sandhu, was
the chief guest.

Presidents elected: Dr H.S. Gupta, Mr Paresh
Narad, and Mr Randhir Singh Rana have been
appointed presidents of the local units of the
General Category Welfare Federation, medical
wing, PSEB wing and the Punjab Roadways wing,
respectively, according to Mr Vijay Dutta,
president of the local unit of the federation.
Ban imposed: The
District Magistrate, Dr Roshan Sunkaria, has
banned unauthorised lucky draw schemes in the
district and has imposed Section 144 of the Cr PC
till December 18. The orders were issued on
Monday.

Untraceable: The boy who allegedly murdered
an old man on Saturday is still not traceable.
The police has registered a case. The local S.P
said raids had been conducted at various hideouts
to apprehend the suspect.

UGC course: A UGC-sponsored refresher course
in contemporary physics was inaugurated at
Punjabi University here on Sunday at which more
than 40 teachers from different universities and
colleges participated. Speaking on the occasion
Mr V.P. Nayyar, Head, Department of Physics
elaborated on how development in different fields
of physics was playing a major role in science
and technology and helping improve the quality of
life.

Eye camp: As many as 35 patients were
operated for cataract and about 240 persons were
examined at an eye camp organised by the Doon
Welfare Society, Dumewal, in collaboration with
the local district blindness control society at
Dumewal village near Nurpur Bedi on Saturday. The
patients were provided medicines free of cost.
