Army celebrations
COLOMBO, Oct 10 (PTI) — The Vice Chief of Staff of the Indian Army Lt. Gen Chandrasekhar represented India at the golden jubilee celebrations of Sri Lankan Army here on Sunday. General Chandrasekhar is the senior most Indian Army General to have visited Colombo since the departure of the Indian Peace Keeping Force from Sri Lanka in 1990.

Ceasefire extended
GUWAHATI, Oct 10 (PTI) — The suspension of Army operations against the NSCN(K) in Nagaland would be extended for six months from October 16, defence sources said here today. The suspension, started since late last year, would continue till April 15, 2000, the sources said. A ceasefire with the NSCN(I-M) was already in force in the state since 1997.

CTBT ratification
DHAKA, Oct 10 (PTI) — Bangladesh has declared that it would ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), Foreign Secretary Shafi Sami said. Responding to a strong appeal by the just concluded Vienna conference on facilitating the entry into force of the CTBT, Bangladesh had decided to ratify the treaty, Shafi Sami was today quoted by the official BSS news agency as saying.

Tension in Hyderabad
HYDERABAD, Oct 10 (UNI) — Tension prevailed in many parts of old city today after the son of Majlis Bachao Tahareek President Amanullah Khan was stabbed allegedly by Majlis-Ittehadul-Muslimeen (MIM) activists. The police said MIM activists attacked the MBT office in Moghulpura, ransacked furniture and stabbed Mr Farhatullah Khan. He was rushed to a nearby hospital with injuries.

CAIRO, Oct 10 (AFP) — Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has approved a new Cabinet that introduces more than a dozen fresh faces stressing youth, economy and technology, officials said today. The Cabinet led by Prime Minister Atef Ebeid brings changes at 12 ministries and the creation of a new Youth Ministry but retains old hands at key posts like foreign affairs,

NEW DELHI, Oct 10 (PTI) — Defence Minister George Fernandes was today unanimously elected leader of the Janata Dal (United) parliamentary party. Mr Fernandes' name was proposed by former union ministers Ram Vilas Paswan and Nitish Kumar and seconded by all party MPs present at the meeting of the newly-elected members, JD(U) President Sharad Yadav told reporters.

Yeltsin's health
MOSCOW, Oct 10 (AP) — Russian President Boris Yeltsin received treatment for flu and his temperature was returning to normal today as he recuperated at a Moscow hospital, the Kremlin said. Mr Yeltsin, who was hospitalised yesterday, has been plagued by recurrent health problems in recent years, and each new illness prompts renewed speculation about his fitness to lead Russia.
