BATALA
Blood donation camp:
A blood donation camp was held here on Friday at the premises of the State Bank of India here. It was organised jointly by employees of the State Bank of India and members of the Lion Club (Greater Batala). SP Surinder Singh Sidhu inaugurated the camp. Thirtyeight units of blood were collected.

FATEHGARH SAHIB
Bar association's decision:
Lawyers of the District Bar Association on Saturday stayed away from the court work to implement the long-standing demand of the lawyers of the state for observing five working days in a week in order to facilitate the lawyers and the judges to clear the pending work. According to Mr Tejinder Singh Salana, president of the Bar Association, this practice would be followed on every Saturday as already decided by the different Bar Associations of the state.

FEROZEPORE
Medical camp:
The Indian Social Welfare Society organised a sapling plantation-cum-medical camp at Government Middle School at Ansal village, near here, on Friday. The society's President, Mr Ashwani Sharma, said about 150 saplings were planted and medicines given free of cost.

HOSHIARPUR
Rozgar yojna:
To raise the standard of living of the weaker sections of society in rural areas of the district a Swarn Jayanti Gram Swai Rozgar Yojna (SGSY) of the Central Government will be introduced during the current financial year. This was disclosed by Mr Iqbal Singh Sidhu, Deputy Commissioner, Hoshiarpur, while addressing in a special meeting of the government and bank officers here on Friday.

Held: The police has arrested three proclaimed offenders — Karamdeon, resident of Patti village, Mohinder Sansi of Awakha police station, Dinanagar and Harpiar of Moona Khurd, Mr R.P. Mittal, SSP, said here on Saturday.

JALALABAD
Paddy destroyed:
As many as 1,000 bags of paddy were destroyed in a fire at main godowns of the Food Corporation of India here on Friday.

Elected:
The following have been elected office bearers of the Indian Chest Society (North Zone): vice-president — Dr K.P Gupta; general secretary — Dr H.J Singh; treasurer — Dr K.S Bhatia; and executive members — Dr J.S Cheema, Dr Kewal Ram, Dr Rajiv Sharma and Dr Surinder Singla.

National science week: The Regional Engineering College (REC) Jalandhar, organised 'national science week' sponsored by the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology at the college premises here from September 22. It concluded on Friday. More than 1000 students from various schools and colleges of the district participated. Prof. R.S Nirjar, Member Secretary (AICTE, New Delhi), was the chief guest and Mr Vijay Bharat, Director, Technical Department of Education, MHRD, New Delhi, presided over the function.

Village 'adopted':
The 3 Punjab Battalion, NCC Ludhiana, headed by Lt Col Om Parkash under the aegis of the NCC Group Headquarters here has 'adopted' Bhattian Dhaha village for developmental activities. It has been selected considering its location being away from the main road, literacy level of the villagers, less development, non-functioning of the small dispensary and condition of the primary and secondary schools in the village. The projects which will be undertaken will be establishment of a children park, school library, landscaping and development of the school, adult education and conduct of medical camp.

PATIALA
Dowry death:
The district police here has registered a case against Gurpal Singh, on accusation of killing his wife Mandep Kaur for want of dowry. The woman succumbed to burn injuries at Rajindra Hospital here on Thursday. She was married to Gurpal Singh of Aman Nagar near DCM Colony here in January 1998. The victim's father Kulwant Singh, in a complaint to the police, said that his daughter was burnt to death by Gurpal Singh who constantly harassed her for bringing more dowry. The police has registered a case under Sections 306/498, IPC, against the accused.

Appeal: Mr Satwant Singh Mohi, organising secretary, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee and a former MLA, has appealed to AICC President Sonia Gandhi to appoint Ms Priyanka Gandhi as President of the Indian Youth Congress.top

KAITHAL
Poppy husk seized:
The district police seized 220 kg of poppy husk and booked four persons under the NDPS Act in September. The police said 132 bottles of illicit liquor, 71 bottles of country wine, 775 pouches of liquor and 1,450 kg of lahan were also seized.

NARNAUL
Inaugurated:
The Deputy Commissioner, Mr S.S Prasad, inaugurated a Bal Bhawan building at the Ateli block on Friday. It was built at a cost of Rs 5 lakh and constructed by the District Balkalyan Parishad. Mr Prasad said a library and facilities for painting, judo, karate etc would be provided for the children.

Protest march: Activists of the Socialist Unity Centre of India, under the leadership of Mr Rajinder Singh, Secretary of SUCI, held a protest march through the main roads of the town and raised slogans in support of their demand to withdraw the recent steep hike in diesel to the extent of 40 per cent.

Elected:
Mr Puran Chand Azad, veteran freedom fighter and a former MLC, has been unanimously elected president, Haryana Pradesh Freedom Fighters Organisation; Capt Risal Singh of INA (Jind), was elected vice-president, while Mr Chaman Lal Ahuja (Panipat) and Mrs Shanta Jain (Sonepat), were elected general secretaries.

Cop suspended:
Ram Avtar posted at the Khairpur police post here was suspended by the SP on Friday for allegedly misbehaving with a Flying Officer.

Sentenced: The Additional District and Sessions Judge awarded two-year imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on Manoj Sansi of Subhash Colony on Friday for making a murderous assault on a shopkeeper.

Dharna:
The indefinite dharna launched by members of the All-Haryana PWD Mechanical Karamchari Union, in front of the office of the Superintending Engineer, Public Health Department, to press for the demands of the agitating employees of the Public Health Department, entered the 20th day on Saturday. The main demands include the suspension of the SE, disposal of EB cases, filling of vacant posts through promotions, seniority and reservation and check the misuse of public funds by certain officials.

BILASPUR
Illegal fish trade:
A flying squad of the State Fisheries Directorate here detected nine cases of illegal trade in fish at Barmana and Salappar on Thursday and charged Rs 1300 as fine on the spot from them, besides seizing the fish-catch and putting it to auction for Rs 2000. Assistant Director of Fisheries R.P Dogra said here on Friday that during this season uptill now, the department detected several cases of illegal fish catching and trade in Gobind Sagar and recovered Rs 35, 450 in fines from the defaulters.

Office-bearers:
The following have been elected as office-bearers of the H.P. Co-Op. Department Inspector Association, district Kangra unit, Dharamshala: president — Mr B.S Kanwat; vice-president — Mr Surender Nag; and general secretary — Mr Jagan Nath Nanda.

NAHAN
Function:
Kumari Shya Sharma, Vice Chairperson, Himachal Planning Board, while presiding over the annual function of the Sirmour Mahila Manch, organised by the District reproductive Health Project Society, here on Friday said that participation of all sections of society should be ensured to make this project a success. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Rakesh Kaushal, Deputy Commissioner, said under this project necessary infrastructure was being provided in all health institutions of the district.

Surrendered:
Ashok Kumar, an accused in a triple murder case, surrendered in the court of Mr Jai Narayan, additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, here on Friday and was remanded to police custody till next Saturday.
