Unacceptable currency:
Various traders and general public have alleged that officials of the local State Bank of Patiala are not accepting Rs 500 from them. The parents who came to deposit the fee of their wards in this bank were told by the manager that the bank won't accept the currency if not given writing.

LUDHIANA
World Tourism Day:
The Hotel and Restaurant Association of Punjab celebrated the World Tourism Day here on Monday. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Arun Goel, was the Chief Guest. The President of the Association, Mr N.S. Nanda, said the Government of Punjab should renovate all historical and religious places to attract more tourists.

Animal welfare camp: The 4th animal welfare camp in memory of Late Ms Sunanda Bhanot, was organised by the local branch of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (CSPCA). Nearly 100 animals were examined on the occasion.

MOGA
Kerosene shortage:
Local consumers on Wednesday urged the Civil Supplies Department to make proper arrangements for the supply of kerosene as they had been facing an acute shortage of it for the past one year. They alleged that the kerosene was not made available at the Government Fair Price shops but was sold on the black market at Rs 10 per litre as against the fixed price of Rs 3 per litre.

Telephone directory: The telephone subscribers here on Wednesday urged the Telecommunication Department to immediately issue the new telephone directory for 1999-2000, as the department had failed to issue it for the past two years.

NAWANSHAHR
Three arrested:
The SSP, Mr R.P. Meena, said here on Wednesday that the local police had arrested Jasvir Singh and Dharminder Kumar on a charge of smuggling and had recovered 30 bags of poppy husk from them. Whereas Sanjiv Kumar was arrested under Sections 13/3/67 of the Gambling Act.

PATIALA
Arrest culprits:
The next of kin of Baljit Kaur (26), who was allegedly poisoned to death by her in-laws on September 26, appealed to the district police chief to arrest the culprits on Wednesday.

Abolish octroi: The Patiala Beopar Mandal on Wednesday urged the Punjab Government to follow the example of Haryana and abolish octroi in the state. The President of the mandal, Mr Surjit Kumar Mehta, said the demands of Haryana Traders were accepted and octroi was abolished, whereas, the Punjab Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, was not abolishing the same.

Remembrance: A former Chairman of the Punjab Public Service Commission, Mr Amarjit Singh, was remembered on his first death anniversary here on Tuesday. The Public Health Minister, Mr Raja Narinder Singh paid rich tribute to the former chairman.

Camp organised: Six day character building camp organised by DAV School ended here on Wednesday. The Director of the DAV College Management Committee, Mr D.R. Gupta was the Chief Guest.

Giddha workshop: The North Zone Cultural Centre will organise a giddha workshop from October 5 onwards at the local Sheesh Mahal. Girls above 16 years of age can participate in it. Mr H.S. Gill will impart giddha training.

Tribute paid: Children Memorial Public School organised a function to pay tributes to 22 school children who were drowned in the Sutlej river in a boat accident that occurred in 1982. The Chairman of the Punjab School Education Board, Mr Kehar Singh, presided over the function.

Tempo union:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Ex-Servicemen Tempo Union: President - Mr Habib Khan; Vice-President - Mr Harinder Singh; Secretary - Mr Kuldip Singh; and Treasurer - Mr Gurmit Singh.

Quiz competition: The Institute of Science Education, Punjab, conducted Science Quiz and chart-making competition for the secondary schools of Ropar tehsil on Thursday. Students from various schools participated.

Farmers' credit card: About 374 credit cards to farmers have been issued so far by various banks of the district to fulfill the needs of the farmers. They have been forwarded loans worth Rs 2 crore on these cards. This was stated by the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Mr Khushi Ram.top

Celebration: The World Wide Fund for Nature India, Northern Chapter, will celebrate 'Habitat Week' from Friday. Inter-school debates, tree plantation, painting competitions and pollution awareness rallies will be organised at different places in the city.

Dental camp: The Inner Wheel Club, Chandigarh Central, and the NSS Wing of Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26, jointly organised a free dental check-up camp at Raipur Kalan village on Thursday. About 100 villagers and 200 students of Government Primary School, Raipur Kalan, were checked.

Alleged: The Subzi Mandi Phari Association alleged on Thursday that its members were being harassed by the Secretary of the Market Committee, who had taken away their vegetables without issuing any receipts many times.

Competition: Samriddhi, a social organisation, at a meeting with principals held on Thursday, decided to hold a drawing competition for students of the schools in Ram Darbar on Tuesday.

Concluded: A 10-day special camp organised in Colony Number 4, Industrial Area, by the NSS unit, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20, concluded on Thursday. About 50 volunteers participated.

Teaching aids: To encourage teachers to prepare and use teaching aids, the State Institute of Education, Sector 32, organised a teaching aids competition for science teachers of the city schools.

Urged: The Chandigarh Beopar Mandal urged the Administration on Thursday to withhold proceedings going on in various courts against outdated building violations till the introduction of building bylaws.

Contest: Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37, held a contest on Thursday on the contribution of the NSS in social upliftment and development of overall personality of the youth.

Contributed: The staff of the Directorate of Census Operations, Haryana, has contributed one day's salary, amounting to Rs 22,000, to the National Defence Fund.

Established: On the eve of International Day for Elderly People, the Central Bank of India has established an exclusive counter for senior citizens at its branch in Sector 35-D.

Meeting:
The local maxi cab operators and drivers of private vehicles convened a meeting against the harassment, challans and unremunerative work taken from them by the police at Charkhi Dadri, 30 km from here, on Wednesday. The meeting was presided over by Mr Jai Singh Sangwan.

KALKA
Camp:
The District Red Cross Society on Tuesday organised a blood donatoin camp at DAV Senior Secondary School, Surajpur, where 60 persons donated the blood. This was disclosed by the President of the District Red Cross Society , Mr Vivek Joshi.

PANIPAT
Memorandum:
A five member delegation of the Congress led by an ex-minister, Mr Balbir Pal Shah, on Wednesday handed over a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner and demanded the dismissal of the Minister of State for Tourism and Education, Mr Om Prakash Jain, and a probe into the thermal power rest house incident.

Eye camp:
A free eye camp was organised by the Lions Club at Mandi Kalanwali, 40 km from here, on Wednesday. The camp was inaugurated by Mr Seth Lalman, a social worker. Medicines were distributed free of cost.

Imprisonment: The Judicial Magistrate (First Class), Mr Harbir Singh Dahiya, on a complaint lodged by Saroop Singh awarded a one-and-a-half year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 800 to Binda Rake of the local Regr Basti and Joga and Pala Singh on Wednesday in a case registered against them under Sections 323,427,451 and 506 of the IPC. The accused had refused to pay the money after drinking tea from Saroop Singh's stall and had assaulted and damaged his tea stall.

SONEPAT
Reinstatement ordered:
The Director of the Higher Education, Haryana, has ordered the reinstatement of two lecturers of the local CRA College who were terminated by the management of the Tikka Ram Education Society last month.

Inaugurated: The District Education Officer, Mr Sudarshan Kaushik, inaugurated a nine-room block on the premises of Government Girls Senior Secondary School at Kharkhauda town, 19 km from here, on Wednesday.

Rail traffic disrupted: Rail traffic on the Sonepat-Delhi section of the Northern Railway remained disrupted for more than an hour on Thursday. Thousands of passengers were stranded at Sonepat and nearby railway stations.

Arrested: The Kharkhauda police has arrested two criminals following the alleged recovery of a country-made pistol and a knife from them on Wednesday. The SSP said here on Thursday that the criminals had been identified as Anand and Krishan. A case under the Indian Arms Act was registered against them.

Vehicles stolen: Thieves stole a car from Sujan Singh Park and a scooter from a vegetable market here in the past few days. Similarly, a truck parked outside the house of Mr Ramesh Chander and a car parked outside the house of Mr Subhash Bajaj were also stolen. Cases have been registered.top
