Pedestrians killed in mishaps

CHANDIGARH, Nov 25 — In separate accidents, two pedestrians were killed here today.

According to the police sources, Tirath, who worked as a mechanic in the Air Force, was walking towards his house in Sector 47 when he was killed by a speeding truck. Also, Prem Lata was walking towards her house when she was hit by a scooterist near the Sectors 38-40 crossing. She sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the hospital where she died later.

The scooterist, Sector 41 resident Piara Singh, has been arrested, while the truck driver fled from the scene of the crime.

Girl abducted: Rattan Chand, a resident of Sector 7-C has alleged that Saroj, Som Pal, Martu Ram and Paras Ram, all residents of Azad Colony in Sector 21 of Panchkula, have abducted his minor daughter. A case has been registered and further investigations are on.

Eve-teasers held: In separate incidents, Khuda Lahora resident Sanjeev and Raghu Ram of Dadu Majra, have been arrested on the charges of eve-teasing. Cases have been registered against them.

Opium seized: Mahavir, a resident of Sirsa, has been arrested with 950 gram of opium from near the Sector 14 crossing. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against him.

Scooter stolen: Sector 38 resident Arvind has reported that his scooter (CH-01-F-1258) has been stolen from the Sector 32 parking lot. A case has been registered.Back

Orange, apple get cheaper

CHANDIGARH, Nov 25 — Orange and the delicious variety of apple have become cheaper in the local market during the past four days.

During a survey of the market, it was found that a dozen of orange was priced at between Rs 50 and Rs 60 today. Its wholesale price came down from Rs 400 to Rs 300-350 per 12 dozens. According to traders, the price came down owing to enhanced supplies of the fresh crop from Maharashtra and the adjoining areas.

Similarly, the delicious variety of apple became cheaper during this period. If a kg of the fruit was priced at Rs 40 last week, it could be had today at between Rs 25 and Rs 35 due to increased arrivals from Himachal Pradesh. The fruit was priced at Rs 300 per 17-kg pack in the wholesale market. There was, however, no change in the prices of the Kinnaur and golden varieties of the fruit as a kg of each could be had at Rs 50 and Rs 40.

The price of dates also came down. If a kg of the fruit was priced at between Rs 40 and Rs 50 last week, the same could be purchased at between Rs 30 and Rs 40. The fruit was available in the wholesale market at Rs 28 a kg.

There was no change in the price of guava as a kg of it was available at Rs 20 in retail and Rs 12 in the wholesale market. The same was the case with banana as a dozen of it could be relished after paying Rs 20 in the retail market. In the wholesale market the price was Rs 110 per 100 pieces. Papaya lovers could had it in the retail market at Rs 20 a kg and at Rs 12 a kg in the wholesale market.Back



 


DAVSSS-8 lift title

CHANDIGARH, Nov 25 — Hosts DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, clinched the under-16 boys' title in the UT Cricket Tournament by overpowering Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, by 8 wickets.

Batting first, GMSSS-35 made 124 for 8 in the allotted 25 overs. Amandeep scored 35 runs and Gurkirat 26 runs. Kshitij, Prashant, Shekhar and Karan took two wickets each.

In reply, DAVSSS-8 achieved the target in 17.1 overs. Akashdeep and Naresh scored 52 and 40 runs, respectively.

Powerlifting tourney: The Chandigarh Powerlifting Association will organise the 15th senior and 8th junior Chandigarh State Powerlifting Championship on December 5. The junior powerlifting team (men) will be selected for the XXI Junior Men's National Powerlifting Championship, to be held at Durgapur in Bengal from January 4 to 8.

Skating championship: Blue Bird School, Sector 16, Panchkula, will host the Panchkula District Skating Championship, which begins tomorrow. According to Ms R. Bhatnagar, Principal of the school, skaters from Hansraj Public School, Sector 6, Manav Mangal School, Sector 11, Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 15, DAV School, Surajpur, and Blue Bird School will participate in this three-day meet.

The events to be organised will be track race, road race and roller hockey for under-14 and under-19 age groups. The district team for the Haryana State Skating Championship, scheduled for next month, will be selected during this meet.

Weightlifting meet: The Chandigarh Amateur Weightlifting Association will hold the 11th senior and 1st junior men and 3rd women UT Weightlifting Championship at Weightlifting Coaching Centre, Sector 30, on December 4. Senior men's and women's teams will be selected for the 53rd Men's National Weightlifting Championship, to be held at Kalyan in Maharashtra from December 26 to 30.

Basketball trials: The Chandigarh Basketball Association will hold trials to select the UT team for under-16 boys and girls at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, on November 27, according to Mr K.S. Bharti, Secretary of the association.

The team will take part in the 16th Youth National Basketball Championship to be held at Chittorgarh in Rajasthan from December 8 to 13. Players interested should report to the Secretary of the association.Back


Ekta, Aditya best athletes

CHANDIGARH, Nov 25 — Ekta Chadha in girls and Aditya Sharma in boys were declared best athletes at the annual sport day of Mount Carmel School, Sector 46, organised at the Sector 46 Athletics Stadium, here today.

Mr Earnest Charles J. Samuel, Principal, unfurled the school flag in the morning, followed by a march past by contingents of the four houses of the school. Bursting of balloons, frog race, sock race, spoon and lemon race, relay race, tricycle race, eating the bun, sparrow race, train and potato race, three-legged race, aiming and breaking the pot, hurdles, pot race, 100, 200 and 400 m races, cycling, tug of war, long jump, shot put and slow cycling were held.

In tug of war for girls, Wordsworth House were declared winners and Milton House were runners-up. In tug of war for boys, Keats House were declared winners while MiltoHouse were runners-up.

Taekwondo team: The Taekwondo Association of Chandigarh has selected a 20-member taekwondo (ITF) team of boys and girls to take part in the 14th National Taekwondo Championship, to be held at HMT Indoor Hall, Pinjore, from November 27 to 29. The boys' team comprises G.S. Dhillon, Rajesh Kumar, Harish Kumar, Amarjit Singh, Jaswinder Singh, Vinod Kumar, Vinod Sharma, Nayab Qureshi, Sunil Channa, Amit Kumar, Amit Mittal, Babloo Dharamveer, Surinder Singh, Ankush Aggarwal and Ravi Kumar.

The girls' team comprises Geeta Chouhan, Sudesh Rani, Rekha Rani, Supneet Kaur, Sonia Kumari. Harjinder Kumar will be the coach and Rajiv Saluja the manager.

PU relay races: SGGS College, Chandigarh, and Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, won the 4 x 200 m relay for men and women, respectively, on the first day of the Panjab University inter-college relay races at PU grounds. DAV College, Sector 10, won the medley relay.

Results — men: 4 x 200 m relay: SGGS 1, GNNC, Doraha 2, DAVC 3; medley relay: DAV 1, PUC 2, SGGS 3; women: KCW 1, Ramgarhia Girls College 2, GGSC (W) 3.

Handball trials: The Chandigarh Handball Association will hold trials to select the UT men's handball team at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, on November 27, according to Mr Ravinder Talwar, General Secretary of the association. Selected players will represent Chandigarh in the 28th Senior National Men's Handball Championship, to be held at Pune from December 7 to 12.Back
