PANCHKULA

SP booked: The police registered a case against an SP of the Haryana police for financial irregularities to the tune of Rs 75.75 lakh following an audit report. The audit authorities found that he, while posted as SP (Telecommunication), withdrew money to pay a supplier and caused loss to the state treasury by way of interest.

A scrutiny of records showed that Rs 75,74,984, drawn on March 31, had been shown as disbursed on the same date in the cash book, whereas no amount was paid to the supplier on the same day. Amounts of Rs 33,34,401 and Rs 28,59,480 were disbursed only in October.

It was found that the SP had cheated the government by keeping the amount outside the treasury and caused a loss of Rs 8,26,105 by way of interest at the rate of 20 per cent per annum. Further, it was found that the officer deducted Rs 13,81,103 from the bill for the late supply of material, which could not be recovered from the supplier. As the delivery period was extended as per the agreement, no penalty for supplies made during the period could be recovered from the supplier.

Cultural Scene
Loads of colour impress
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Nov 24 — In winter months, bright resplendent colours are more than welcome. And that is what Sonal A. Singh's exhibition of paintings at Art Folio, Sector 9, has to offer.

The exhibition was inaugurated today by Mr Niranjan Singh, Principal Secretary, Tourism, Punjab. The exhibition will remain open till November 29.

The exhibition, which comprises 24 works in oil and acrylic, uses loads of colour. Her paintings titled 'I Love Bananas', 'Celebration of Colour' and 'Accident' are impressive.

Sonal A. Singh, a product of Government College of Fine Arts, Sector 10, says these works have been done over a period of time. "I wanted to paint all that was in my head, as part of the response going on inside my body," she says.

A wooden box, painted with all imaginable colours, forms part of the show. Sonal's paintings on large canvas sometimes seem out of control.

At the other end of Art Folio, an exhibition of 11 pencil sketches by a 13-year old deaf and dumb boy, Saurabh Saini, have been put up. The sketches, drawn out of his textbooks, represent persons from history like Gandhi, Tilak, Sai Baba and Aurangzeb. An interesting representation of Rock Garden, about his impressions of the artifacts made out of waste, deserves special mention.

Though most of the works present confident strokes, he will certainly need direction to come out of the 'laid-out prescriptions' for drawing — something which is taught rigorously at school levels. Saurabh's exhibition has been put up by the art gallery to encourage this 'special' child artist.Back
