Price Watch
Carrot, tomato cheaper
Tribune News Service

PANCHKULA, Nov 8 — The prices of vegetables varied considerably from sector to sector in the local markets. While the general trend was towards higher prices of cucumber, garlic, peas and lady's finger, the prices of carrots and tomatoes dropped due to better arrival of the local varieties in the market.

The rate of cucumber nearly doubled due to lesser arrivals in the market. The price went up from Rs 12 to Rs 24 a kg in the absence of arrivals of the `pahari' variety and the non-availability of the local variety. The price of peas also increased from last week's Rs 25 per kg to Rs 28 per kg in the Sector 7 market and Rs 30 in the market of Sector 8 for the same reason.

Vegetable vendors were selling lady's finger at Rs 16 a kg against last week's price of Rs 10 a kg. They attributed the rise in price to the shortage in the market and stated that this was probably the last stock of the vegetable of the local variety. The vegetable available henceforth would be the Calcutta variety.

The price of carrot came down from Rs 35 a kg to Rs 25 a kg this week in Sector 7 while the same quantity could be had for Rs 20 in Sector 8 and Sector 9. Vegetable vendors, however, continued to sell the vegetable at Rs 30 a kg.

While ginger continued to be available at last week's price of Rs 30 per kg, the price of garlic went to Rs 50 per kg, up by Rs 10 per kg from last week's price in the Sector 7 market. However, it was available at Rs 40 a kg in the Sector 8 market. The price of a kg of lemon went down from Rs 30 to Rs 24 a kg this week in Sector 7 and Sector 9. Tomatoes were available for Rs 12 a kg in Sector 7 and Sector 9 markets.

A kg of radish was priced at Rs 5 a kg while a kg of fenugreek could be bought for Rs 16 in Sector 7 while it was available for Rs 10 in the Sector 8 market. Pumpkin was priced at Rs 10 a kg and spinach at Rs 8 a kg. Bittergourd was priced at Rs 20 a kg in Sector 8 and the price of capsicum shot up to Rs 50 from last week's price of Rs 40 a kg.
