HOSHIARPUR
Memorandum :
Mr Inderjit Saini, Senior Vice-President of the state unit of the Samata Party, presented a memorandum to Mr Parkash Singh Badal, Chief Minister, Punjab here on Tuesday in which he demanded the setting up of a mini secretariat in the city. He pointed out that government offices were presently located in different places due to which people were facing hardships.

Whisky seized: Mr R.P. Mittal, SSP, said in a press note issued here on Tuesday that in a special drive launched against anti-social elements, the local police carried out a raid near Nasrala choe on Monday night and seized 600 bottles of whisky hidden in bushes. He said the Tanda police arrested Mona and Ladoo, residents of Miani, and recovered 100 bottles of lahan from them. The police also arrested Ajay Kumar, Amardeep, alias Kaka, both residents of the local Mohalla Kamalpur, Dinesh Kumar of Mohalla Islamabad, and Ram Narain and Ranjit Singh of Bihar under the Gambling Act and recovered Rs 36,500 from them.

Link road: Resentment prevails among inhabitants, especially Harijans of Gignowal village against the decision of the PWD authorities of the local Rural Works Division to lower the level of the link road in the middle portion of the village allegedly to favour some persons having political connections. Mr Charanjit Singh Channi, MP, along with newspersons inspected the site on Monday. The inhabitants pointed out that the lowering of the road would cause damage to many houses belonging to Harijans. Mr Charanjit Singh Channi assured them that he would take up the issue with the Deputy Commissioner.

MOGA
Electrocuted:
Bikkar Singh of Jaimalwala village in the district, who was asked by employees of the Punjab State Electricity Board, to help them in lifting girders was electrocuted on Monday. He died on the spot.

NAWANSHAHR
Orientation programme:
A week-long special orientation programme for primary school teachers was organised by the SCERT here at Government Coeducation Senior Secondary School under the supervision of the DEO, Mrs Gurjit Kaur. In a press note issued here on Tuesday, Mr Gurmail Singh Sahlon, Deputy DEO-cum Course Director, said the programme, which concluded on Monday, aimed at equipping primary school teachers with the latest teaching techniques.

Boy killed: Manga (13) of the local Ibrahim Basti and a student of class VIII was killed on the spot when a truck hit his bicycle here on Monday.

DYFI meeting: A state-level general body meeting of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) was held at Desh Bhagat Hukma Singh Ghakewal Yadgari Bhavan here on Sunday. As many as 110 members from various districts participated. Mr Sukhwinder Singh Sekhon, president of the DYFI, while presiding over the meeting said the DYFI had so far recruited 57,000 members and would increase the membership to 1.10 lakh before March, 2000.

Elected:
A meeting of residents of Harinder Nagar held here on Monday unanimously elected Mr J.P.S. Kalra and Mr B. S. Jaggi, president and general secretary, respectively, of the Harinder Nagar Welfare Association.

PHILLAUR
Homoeopathy centre:
The president of the National Homoeopathic Association, Dr M.S. Chugh, has urged the Punjab Government to set up a high-level homoeopathic research centre in the state to promote homoeopathy. Mr Chugh said on Monday that people were now getting attracted towards homoeopathic treatment.

Gur Gaddi Divas:
The annual function of Gur Gaddi Divas of Sri Guru Granth Sahib was celebrated on Monday at Nirmal Kutia cottage, Shahapur village, 7 km from here, and was attended by a large number of devotees. Bhai Ranjit Singh, a former Akal Takht chief, addressed the religious gathering among others. Sant Davinder Singh, head of Nirmal Kutia, delivered his message to the sangat.

Vacant posts: Mr Satish Kumar Jhamb, secretary of the Parent Teachers Association of the local SGAD Government College has demanded that the vacant posts of teachers in the college should be filled soon. Mr Jhamb said the posts of lecturers of history, geography, physical education and commerce had been lying vacant since a long time.

Cultural mela: The day-long annual 10th cultural mela was organised by the local Majha Rang Manch and Sabhayacharak Kendra on Sunday, Dr Rattan Singh, Minister for Animal Husbandry, presided over the function and promised a grant of Rs 1 lakh to the Sabhayacharak Kendra. Dr H.S. Soch, Vice-Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, and Mr Tarlochan Singh Tur, MP, were present on the occasion. More than two dozen artistes presented their items.

Cheque released: HelpAge India released a cheque for Rs 2.8 lakh to the Shubhkaraman Health Care Society on Tuesday for an eye care programme for the needy elderly. The cheque was released by Ms Sarita Manuja, Principal of DAV Public School.

Children's Day: The Sahayta Bal Cancer Sahyog and Paediatric Department of the PGI will celebrate Children's Day on November 4. A puppet show, a painting competition and other activities will be organised.

Promoted: Mr Prem Nath Jindal, Private Secretary to the Punjab Minister of State, Food and Supplies has been promoted as Secretary to the minister, according to a press note. He will continue to work at the present assignment.

Camp:
Blood samples of 103 persons were examined at a free diabetes camp organised by the local Rotary Club at Khalsa Senior Secondary School on Tuesday.

Inaugurated: A Leo Club was inaugurated by Mr Paramjit Kohli, District Governor, Lions Club, on Tuesday.

Vaccinated: About 300 persons were vaccinated against hepatitis-B at a camp organised by the local Rotary Club at Khalsa Senior Secondary School on Tuesday.

SIRSA
Shopkeeper held :
Vinod Kumar, a shopkeeper, was arrested by the police here on Monday for allegedly murdering his wife. According to police sources, he had been harassing her and on October 26, he allegedly sprinkled kerosene on his wife and set her on fire.

DEO assumes charge: Mr Om Parkash Tiwari, Principal of Government Senior Secondary School, Jamal, who was transferred as Deputy District Education Officer, Sirsa, took charge on Monday. Mr Yagya Dutt, Principal of Government Senior Secondary School, Rania, who was transferred as Principal Government Senior Secondary School for Boys, Sirsa, also assumed charge on Monday. Mrs Satnam Kaur has been posted as Principal Government Senior Secondary School, Jamal.

Wounded: Ramji Lal of Dhingtana village in the district received serious injuries, when he tried to intervene to settle a dispute between his brothers over a tubewell. He was rushed to the local civil hospital where he was stated to be out of danger.

Assault: Suresh Kumar and his brother Sanjay of Talwara Khurd village in the district were seriously injured in an attack by five persons near the village on Sunday. According to informed sources, the accused, including Om Parkash, Naresh and Ram Chand, opened fire at the victims at the village bus stand. They then overpowered the two and reportedly made a murderous assault on them. The injured were hospitalised and a case has been registered.

SONEPAT
Injured:
Kuldeep, an employee of a factory, sustained injuries when he was hit by a car on the G.T Road near Murthal, 8 km from here, on Monday. He was hospitalised. A scooterist was also injured when he was hit by a vehicle on the G.T Road near Rai village, 15 km from here, on Monday. Rinku, a teenaged boy, was injured when he was hit by a vehicle in the Model Town area here on Monday.

Arrested: The police has arrested Suresh, alias Papu of Hassangarh (Rohtak) and Surinder, alias Biloo of Kurar village (Sonepat) for allegedly being found in possession of 500 gm of contraband opium. According to Mr K.P Singh, SP, the police also arrested Ajit of Ghodli village (UP) and recovered contraband charas and a country-made pistol. The police also arrested Rajinder of Azamgarh (UP) and Ashwani of West Ram Nagar (Sonepat) on the charge of smuggling liquor following the recovery of 400 liquor pouches from them.

Crushed to death:
Baldev (30) was crushed to death by a maxi cab near Nag Mandir on the Dharamsala-Dehra road on Monday. A case has been registered.

SHIMLA
Dental camp:
DAV Dental College, Solan, organised a free dental camp at the Sankatmochan temple, near here, on Sunday. As many as 150 persons were examined, according to Dr C.M. Grover.

SOLAN
Ban on crackers:
The District Magistrate , Mr R.D. Dhiman, on Monday issued an order banning the sale and manufacture of crackers on the Mall Road, Lower Bazar, Lakkar Bazar, Chowk Bazar, Ganj Bazar and the Upper Bazar localities of the town till November 10. The District Magistrate has fixed the timings of sale of crackers between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Animal husbandry: The Minister of State for Animal Husbandry, Mr Parkash Chaudhry, on Sunday directed his department to review the method of taking samples of milk brought here for sale by villagers with a view to minimise the hardships being faced by them in this connection. Mr Chaudhry, who was speaking at a public meeting organised in connection with the annual fair at Dharot village, near here, said the government was aware of the employment potential of poultry and dairy farming, and would soon launch suitable schemes to create jobs in these sectors.

UNA
Power cuts:
Una town, Mehatpur and the Tahliwal industrial area of the district have been facing power cuts from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. since Friday. The authorities concerned told The Tribune that there was shortage of electricity in the power grid and the central power grid had directed the state electricity board to impose scheduled power cuts.
