AMRITSAR
Appointed:
Mr Kawaljit Singh has been appointed head of the Computer Science and Engineering Department of Guru Nanak Dev University while Prof Surinder Singh has been appointed head of the Microbiology Department. Dr Sharda Sidhu will head the Human Genetics Department.

BATHINDA
Tablets distributed:
As many as 500 children were given vitamin A tablets free of cost in a camp organised by the Rajesh Memorial Welfare Society in association with the Sarb Sanjhi Naujawan Sabha at the Guru Nanakpura locality here on Monday.

FATEHGARH SAHIB
Nominated:
Mr Rajesh Paul Singh Lalli has been nominated member of the Telephone Advisory Committee, Patiala division.
Ticket sought:
Panchayats of various villages of the district in a press note on Monday said that they had written a letter to the Chief Minister, demanding that Mr Dalip Singh Pandhi, a veteran Akali leader of Amloh, be given party ticket for Ropar (R) parliamentary seat.

HOSHIARPUR
Murder:
The police has arrested 10 persons, all residents of Mehna village, under Sections of 302, 323, 324, 148 and 149, IPC, for allegedly killing Jagdip Singh and injuring his father, Jarnail Singh and brother, Gurdip Singh. The SSP stated in a press note here on Tuesday that on May 13 the accused assaulted Jarnail Singh and his sons, with swords and other sharp-edged weapons while they were on their way back home.
Cong appointments:
Mr Sarwan Singh, President of the municipal council, has been appointed President of the City Congress Committee in place of Mr Vinod Kumar Bodhi who has been appointed its Vice-President.
Voters' lists:
A campaign for making amendments to voters lists in this district will be completed on Thursday. Mr G. Romesh Kumar, acting Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer, stated in a press release on Tuesday that objections and claims regarding enrolment of new voters had been received.
Liquor seized:
The police has arrested Daljit Singh of Tanda Urmur and seized 20 bottles of illicit liquor from him. In a press note on Tuesday, police said that Amit Nayar of Bahadurpur had also been arrested and 40 bottles of country-made liquor from his possession.

KHANNA
Sanctioned:
The local municipal council has sanctioned Rs 3.5 crore for various development schemes in the city.

LUDHIANA
Loan limit increased:
Mr Sarbjit Singh, ADC(D), has said the limit of the loan amount given to unemployed youth has been raised from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 lakh and the qualification for the applicants reduced from matriculation to middle standard.

MOGA
Resentment:
The Association of Teaching Staff of Lord Mahavir Homoeopathy Medical College, Ludhiana, on Tuesday expressed concern over the failure of the state government to affiliate the college to Baba Farid University, Faridkot.

NAWANSHAHR
Allocated:
The Punjab Government will spend Rs 570 crore on roads. This was stated by the Welfare Minister, Mr Sarwan Singh Phillaur, while presiding over a "vikas samagam" organised at Aur village, 15 km from here, on Tuesday.
Farm officers:
Dr Mewa Singh Sonar, Director, Agriculture Department, addressing a function organised by the Agriculture Officers Welfare Association, Punjab, here on Monday advised farmers to adopt new technology and not to sow paddy before June 10.
Dharna: The district unit of the Punjab Mulazam Sangarsh Committee on Tuesday organised a dharna in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner here in protest against the "anti-employee policies" of the state government.
Urged:
Mr Prem Kumar Rattan, President of the district unit of the Ministerial Staff Services Union, in a press note here on Tuesday urged the state government to grant DA instalment to employees.

NANGAL
Annual function:
The annual function of the Shivalik College of Pharmacy was organised here on Monday. The president of the local Municipal Council, Mr Rakesh Sharma, who was the chief guest, gave away the prizes.

PHAGWARA
New course:
The College of General Practitioners, an academic wing of the Indian Medical Association, has started a course in family medicine under the open university system recently affiliated to the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Stating this here on Monday, Dr Raman Aggarwal, Honorary Secretary of the college said the first diploma course examinations would be held in Chennai in August.

PATIALA
Invited:
Dr P.K. Chattopadhyay, professor of forensic science, Punjabi University, has been invited to attend the fourth international symposium on "Advances in legal medicines to be held at Mainz, Germany, in September.
Refresher course:
The Physics Department of Punjabi University organised an inaugural function of a UGC-sponsored refresher course on laser physics, optical technology and radiation physics on Sunday. Prof Ram Murti Goel, pro Vice-Chancellor, Punjabi University, was the chief guest.

SANGRUR
'Sangat darshan':
A "sangat darshan" programme was held here on Sunday which was presided over by Mr Mohinder Singh Kainth, Additional Deputy Commissioner. Twenty-three complaints were referred to departments concerned for speedy redressal. While 12 complaints were solved on the spot.

Poppy husk:
The police on Monday registered a case under the NDPS Act against Amarjit Singh of Mehmoodpura village for possessing poppy husk.

Elected: Mr Jagir Singh of Kharar has been elected President of the Deputy Commissioner's Employees Association Ropar. Mr Vinod Kumar has been elected Vice-President, Mr Sukhanpal the Secretary, and Mr Ram Parshad Sharma the Cashier according to a press note issued here today.
Mahila Congress: Mrs Raksha Dhand of Kharar has been appointed the District Vice-President of the District Mahila Congress (I) Ropar.
Charge taken: Mr Sher Singh, newly appointed SDO (telephones) of Kharar, took over the charge of his office on Tuesday.

GURGAON
Resolution:
A meeting of Shahri Dehati Vikas Panchayat was held here in which more than 300 workers participated. Mr Ishwar Dass Jhamb, chairman of the unit, said a resolution had been passed demanding a railway line in Mewat, a medical college and canals in Gurgaon.

HISAR
Trader robbed:
Two motor cycle--borne youths wearing masks, snatched a bag containing over Rs 1 lakh from Mr Shyam Sunder, a trader, of Rewari near Hansi, 26 km from here, on Tuesday. Shopkeepers of Pratap Bazaar downed their shutters and staged a dharna in protest against the incident.

KAITHAL
Son kills mother:
Kitab Singh of Geong village is reported to have strangled his mother after she refused to give him money. According to police sources, Gaje Singh, father of the accused, had leased his land and deposited the money in bank. His son asked his mother to give him some money, but when she refused, he hit her with a stick and strangled her. The police has registered a case under Section 302, IPC, following a complaint lodged by the father of the accused who is reportedly missing.

SONEPAT
Elected:
Mr Ram Lal Batra has been elected President of the local Mohalla Kot Sudhar Samiti.
Assault: The Ganaur police has launched a massive hunt for two youths of Pabnera village who had forced their way into a house on Tuesday and assaulted a 16-year-old girl. According to another report, two persons entered a house at Dodwa village and molested a woman. A case has been registered.

SIRSA
Open darbar:
As many as 100 complaints were solved on the spot at an open darbar organised at the local Patwar Bhavan here on Monday.
Probe sought:
Mr Brij Mohan Gujjar, President Haryana Forest Department Labour Union, addressing a meeting here on Tuesday alleged that the funds being allotted to the state government for plantation work were being misappropriated by the authorities. He has demanded a CBI probe into the matter.
Karamchari sangh:
The following have been elected office-bearers of district unit of the Haryana Sarvkaramchari Sangh: President — Mr Sohan Singh Randhawa; Senior Vice-President — Mr Gurtej Singh; General Secretary — Mr Rajinder Ahlawat; Secretary — Mr Jaswant Singh Patwari; and Treasurer — Mr Bhajan Singh Ravat.
Sentenced: The Additional District and Sessions Judge here on Monday awarded 10 years' sentence and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh each on three persons for smuggling poppy husk.

YAMUNANAGAR
Development work:
A sum of Rs 6.91 crore has been spent on various development works in the district by the District Development and Panchayat Department. This was disclosed by Mr Rajiv Sharma, Deputy Commissioner, while addressing a press conference at the local Canal Rest House on Monday. He said Rs 2.22 crore had been spent under the Jawahar Rozgar Yojna.
