ABOHAR
Court complex:
Mr M.M. Bhalla, District and Sessions Judge, Ferozepore, on Friday visited the sub-divisional court complex here under a reference from the Punjab and Haryana High Court regarding the failure of the municipal council to dispose of stagnated water in and around the complex. Mr Bhalla, besides local judges and the SDM had taken up the matter with the executive officer of the council in March.

FATEHGARH SAHIB
Confidence:
Fourteen out of 20 members of the municipal council, Mandi Gobindgarh, have submitted notice expressing no confidence against Mr Balmukand, president of the council. The council chief belongs to the BJP. Earlier, he survived no- confidence motions with the help of BJP and Akali ministers. The Deputy Commissioner, had asked the council president to fix a date of meeting. Instead of fixing the meeting, he wrote to all members that there was no need for a no-confidence motion as six months were not over when the last no-confidence motion failed. The members then approached the Deputy Director Local Bodies, Patiala, and the meeting was fixed for May 3.

Fire: A fire broke out in jhuggis at Jyoti Swarup here on Saturday in which three jhuggis were gutted. No loss of life was, however, reported. The SSP gave an assurance that the police would help the affected families to re-establish their jhuggis.

FEROZEPORE
School timings:
The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Gurdev Singh Sidhu, has ordered that all government and private secondary schools should open at 7 a.m. and close at 1 p.m. He further ordered that primary schools should remain open between 7 a.m. and 12 noon. The orders shall come in force from May 3.

Voters' lists: According to the primary publication of the voters' lists, the number of voters in the district is 11,92,946, out of which 6,21,997 are men and 5,70,949 women. Stating this here on Saturday the District Returning Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner, Mr Gurdev Singh Sidhu, said work on the revision of the lists would be completed by June 21.

HOSHIARPUR
Fee hike flayed:
The Punjab Civil Medical Services Association has opposed the Punjab Government's decision to hike the service charges in state hospitals and admission/tuition fees of medical students in graduate and postgraduate courses. Dr Ajay Bagga, state press secretary of the association and Dr M.L. Puri, president PCMS (welfare) Association, in a press note on Saturday described the decision as unjustified.

MANSA
Waterlogging :
To check the menace of waterlogging in this district, a proposal of Rs 47 crore has been sent to the Punjab government, Mr Sanjay Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, said this while addressing 29 panchayats at Boha village on Friday. He handed over a cheque for Rs 47 lakh to 29 panchayats of the Budhlada constituency.

PATHANKOT
Woman's plea:
Tara Bali of Sujanpur has requested the Punjab Chief Minister and the DGP to give her justice against the "excesses" of the police. She said in a written statement that on April 11 she was beaten up by certain persons, resulting in a fracture in her arm. However when she approached the police for lodging a complaint, it allegedly beat up her son. She said her complaint should be registered immediately and the culprits be brought to book.

PHAGWARA
Power supply:
Power and water supply have become erratic in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, Palani Road, Preetam Nagar, Rana Partap Nagar, Chahal Nagar, and Green Park Colony. The Citizens Rights Forum has demanded a regular supply of power and water to residents.

Elected: Educationist Jagat Singh Palahi was on Saturday elected president of the governing council of the local Guru Nanak College for life by the general body of the council that met after five years.top

BHIWANI
Control room:
A control room has been set up in the District Election Office here . The office will function up to July 21. Mr Roshan Lal, City Magistrate, has been made its in charge. The telephone number of the control room is 42121. The Tehsildar, Mr Ishwar Singh, and Mr Ram Kumar Office Assistant, will remain present in the control room.

NIMA meeting: The Executive Council of the National Integrated Medical Association (NIMA), Haryana, will meet on May 9 at Gohana in Sonepat district to discuss problems of the district branches of the association and formation of new branches. Dr R.B. Goel, president of the association, said here on Saturday that Dr Jagdish Singh, former president of NIMA Central Council, Dr O.P. Jaggi, Chairman, Legal Action Committee, and Dr S.P. Dogra, convener, LAC, NIMA , would be felicitated for their services.

KURUKSHETRA
Symposium:
A symposium was organised by the local Adbi Sangam with the help of Haryana Urdu Akademi at the teachers' lounge of Kurukshetra University on Saturday. Dr R.D. Sharma, 'Tasir' presided over the function and released two books published by the Adbi Sangam. Ms Sumedha Kataria, an HCS officer, was felicitated for her book 'Amalatas' with a memento and a shawl. Sabir Abohari was also honoured for his book "Nawai-Gam" on Urdu poetry.

PANIPAT
Charge:
Leaders of various political parties and social organisations on Friday charged the municipal council with failure to redress the long-standing grievances of residents. They said on Friday that all roads in the town had potholes but no repair work had been undertaken. Mr Dharam Pal Gupta, president of the Ekta Manch, said an agitation would be launched if the roads were not repaired.

BSP protest: Workers of the district unit of the Bahujan Samaj Party held a demonstration against the police on Friday for not taking action against the in charge of Krishanpura police post who allegedly misbehaved with Dr Narender Kumar, district president of the party.

REWARI
Bodies found:
Bodies of two unidentified youths were recovered from different places by the government railway police here on Tuesday. The mutilated body of a youth wearing jeans and shoes was found on the Rewari-Mahendergarh rail track, near here. The body of another youth was found on the Rewari-Jaipur track, some distance away from the Bawal station, 14 km from here. Their bodies were declared unclaimed and cremated.

Fodder destroyed: In two incidents of fire which broke out near Motla Kalan village, 15 km from here, and near Kosli village, 35 km from here, on Thursday, cattle fodder and fuel worth about Rs 40,000 was destroyed. The fodder and fuel had been stocked by farmers.

Looted: Fifteen youths, armed with pistols and knives reportedly decamped with about 20 tonnes of brass processing material worth over Rs 20 lakh from a metal sheet unit on the Rewari-Delhi road in the wee hours of Saturday. They locked up security guards and workers in the canteen before escaping. Mr P.N. Bhargava, president of the Rewari Industrial Association, submitted a memorandum in this regard to the Deputy Commissioner.

ROHTAK
Criticised:
The Maharshi Dayanand University Teachers Association has criticised the government for not implementing the revised pay scales and for the delay in releasing grant-in-aid to the university and colleges.

SIRSA
Courts inspected:
Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court N.C. Khichi inspected the local prison complex and courts during his three-day stay. He also inspected the Dabwali courts and on the invitation of the Bar Association visited the Bar room and listened to the suggestion of advocates.

Injured: Puran Chand of Vaidwala village in this district was allegedly injured by two persons with sharp-edged weapons on Saturday. The accused have been identified as Gurnam Singh and Nand Lal, who are reportedly missing.

Forest workers: A meeting of the Haryana Forest Department Mazdoor Union Rania Range was organised at Rania, 20 km from here, on Saturday. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Krishan Lal Khundia, district president of the union, alleged that government funds were being misappropriated by the local authorities.top

CHAMBA
Records seized:
Mr Ram Lal Markanday, Minister of State for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, has seized records of the block development office, Tissa, following complaints regarding irregularities in the accounts and other charges. According to official sources, he has taken the records with him to Shimla for an inquiry.

NURPUR
Vidya upasaks:
The state government's decision to appoint 2100 primary teachers named "vidya upasaks" in lieu of vacant posts of teacher in government primary schools has evoked sharp reaction in Kangra district. A feeling of discrimination has been generated among residents of several districts who feel that the lion's share was grabbed by three districts. The state government, however, clarified that the posts were lying vacant in those districts.

Workers' gift: Mr Rajana Sushant, the State Revenue Minister, was presented a Tata Sumo by daily-paid workers on Friday at a public meeting at Dhameta in the Jawali Assembly segment. Mr Sushant had spearheaded an agitation in 1996 for the regularisation of services of daily paid workers who had completed 10 years. Meanwhile, Mr Sushant inaugurated a Sanjivana Yojna and laid the foundation stone of the Col Daljit Singh Guleria memorial.

Award:
The Karambhoomi Rangalaya of Mumbai has selected Mr Sudershan Gour, president of the Shimla-based All-India Artistes Association, for Chhattrapati Shivaji National Award '98 — for his contribution to theatre.
