Office-bearers:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Shaheed Bhagat Singh College of Engineering and Technology. Staff Welfare Association: president — Mr Vinod Kumar Sharma; vice-president — Mr Madan Kumar Uniyal; general secretary — Mr Gurwinder Singh; joint secretary — Mr Harpinder Singh; propaganda secretary — Mr Pawan Kumar; and treasurer — Mr Rajiv Kumar.

KHARAR
Artificial limbs:
The local Rotary Club in association with Rotary Chandigarh Midtown organised a free artificial limbs camp at Khalsa Senior Secondary School here on Sunday. A total of 102 persons were examined by experts of the Nevedac Prosthetic Centre. Ninety persons were found to be handicapped. Keeping this in view, 20 tricycles, two wheelchairs, nine artificial hands, 15 callipers, 10 artificial legs, 17 elbow joints and other artificial limbs will be manufactured by the centre and distributed free of cost.

Dealers’ association:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Patiala Spare Parts Dealers Association (Sai Market) here: president - Mr M.L. Nohria; vice-president - Mr Pardeep Sood; secretary - Mr Khem Chand; general secretary - Mr Tarsem Chand; and treasurer - Mr Gurvinder Walia.

Invited: Dr R.L. Mittal, former Principal and Head of the Orthopaedic Department of Government Medical College here, has been invited to attend the 72nd Japanese Orthopaedic Association conference at Yokohama in Japan and the Sicot World Congress at Sydney in Australia in April this year. He will be presenting six research papers at these conferences.

Welfare association: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Re-Employed Ex-Services Welfare Association, Punjab, here: president - Mr Prabhjot Singh; vice-president - Prof Tarsem Singh Rana; secretary-general - Mr S.C. Sharma; and finance secretary - Dr S.P. Singh.

Medical camp: The local Darshna Devi Mittal Charitable Trust organised a free medical camp here on Sunday. As many as 500 patients were examined by eminent doctors. About 125 ECGs and 150 clinical tests were conducted free of cost. Medicines were also distributed free of cost to the needy patients.

Health camp: As many as 298 patients were examined in a free children’s health and chest diseases camp organised by the local Lions Club (Central) here on Sunday. Mr V.D. Shorie, Project Chairman of the club, said medicines worth Rs 3400 were given free of cost to the needy patients.top

Court arrest: Eleven volunteers of the BJP Kisan Morcha courted arrest near the AIR Chowk near Sector 34 on Tuesday in protest against the arrest of their leaders.

Draw of lots: The draw of lots for the allotment of specific house numbers to registered applicants of the Chandigarh Housing Board LIG Housing Scheme — 1996 will be held in the board office in Sector 9 here on Wednesday at 10 a.m.

DAAD professorship: The German Academic Exchange Service (Bonn), known as DAAD, has awarded the DAAD professorship to Dr Dip Singh Gill, a professor in the Chemistry Department, Panjab University, here.Dr Gill will take this assignment in October and would teach at the University of Aachen, Germany, for 11 months.top

BHIWANI
Police drive:
A two-day drive launched by the police to check vehicles concluded on Monday. Three police parties checked 315 vehicles on different roads of the town. The DSP said 26 vehicles were challaned for incomplete papers while 16 were impounded.

PANIPAT
Teaching workshop:
A workshop on teaching methodology for teachers of English in engineering colleges was held on Sunday in the N.C. College of Engineering here. Inaugurating the workshop, the Chairman of the Governing Council of the college, Mr D.V. Gupta, said the teaching of English to students of engineering had to be specifically tailored to their needs with emphasis being on the development of communication skills.

ROHTAK
Meeting:
The Haryana unit of the BJP has called for launching a campaign for highlighting the achievements of the Atal Behari Vajpayee government. At a meeting held here on Monday, various leaders observed significant achievements of the BJP-led coalition at the centre had not been projected in a proper manner.

SIRSA
Snatched:
Three persons reportedly snatched Rs 2400 at pistol-point from two employees of a liquor shop situated on the bank of a canal near Desu-Jodhan village. A case under Sections 25,54 and 59 of the Arms Act and Section 392 of the IPC has been registered.

Speculators held: The local police busted a gang of speculators active in this district and arrested five members of the gang from various places in the district on Monday under the Gambling Act. The police recovered Rs 22,910 from their possession.

Dead: Joginder Singh, resident of Khunani village in Uttar Pradesh, died on the spot when he was run over by a jeep at Khairpur on Monday. The police has registered a criminal case against the jeep driver. In another incident, Sharvan Ram, a resident of Mandi Dabwali, died on the spot when his horse cart collided with a Maruti car near Dabwali village, about 60 km from here, on Monday.

SONEPAT
Suicide cases:
Poonam, a 22-year-old housewife, was reported to have committed suicide in her house at Bidhal village, 22 km from here, on Monday. According to the police, she took this extreme step after a family quarrel. According to another report, Mr Ram Kumar (50) committed suicide by taking insecticide tablets in his house at Garhi Haqiqat village, near here, on Monday. A family feud is said to be the main cause of the suicide.
