Fete organised:
Students of the Law Department of and Guru Nanak Dev University organised a cultural fete at the Dasmesh auditorium here on Thursday to mark the silver jubilee of the department. Mr Samant Goel, DIG, inaugurated it. Dr Inderpal Singh, Pro Vice-Chancellor presided.

GURDASPUR
Held for bootlegging:
The police on Friday arrested Roshan Lal of Jhabkara village and his aunt Sheelo of Habit Pindi for their alleged involvement in the sale of illicit liquor and lahan. A case has been registered against them.

Impersonator held: The police on Friday arrested Sanjeev Kumar for impersonating as a police official. He was involved in collecting funds from checking of vehicles and travelling free by bus in police uniform. The police has recovered from his possession the identity card of constable Sukhdev Singh No. 1775 who had been dismissed from service in 1995.

LUDHIANA
Camp for farmers:
The oilseed section of the Punjab Agricultural University will organise a trading camp for farmers on Canola varieties of mustard on Wednesday.

Resigned: Mr Komal Khanna, who was appointed secretary of the Punjab Youth Congress on Thursday has resigned his post. In a statement issued here on Friday, he said he was doing in protest against the attempt by the leadership to ignore sincere and committed workers.

Elected:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Punjab State Electricity Board Employees Federation (AITUC) Patiala circle here: president — Mr Joginder Shamber; vice-presidents — Mr Amarjit Singh Langiran and Mr Harbans Lal, secretary — Mr Jarnail Singh and treasurer — Mr Dharam Singh.

Insurance premium: Mr Anil Malhotra, Development Officer (branch office Patiala National Insurance Company, is the first Development Officer in Patiala to have completed more than Rs 1 crore of premium during 1998-99.

Cassette released: The first copy of an audio-musical cassette "Yeh Hamarey Pir" by NRI child artistes Preet Kamal Kaur and Jugraj Singh was released here. The cassette consists renderings of Shabads of Guru Gobind Singh.

Proclaimed offender :
Balwant Singh, a proclaimed offender, of Ilwal village, near here, has been arrested. According to the district police chief, he had been absconding for the past about seven years.

Hailed: The Chandigarh Young Entrepreneurs Association on Saturday hailed the decision of the Chandigarh Administration to permit 100 per cent sub-letting of industrial plots and sheds. The association also hailed other concession announced by the administration on Friday.

Running trophy: The NIIT-Maya Foundation inter-department running trophy was given to Prof Veer Singh, Chairman of the Department of Laws, at a ceremony organised at the department on Saturday.

Gate rally: The non-teaching employees of the SGGS College, Sector 26, held a gate rally to protest against the non-implementation of their long-pending demands at the college on Saturday. It requested the police to take action against the culprits who had attacked the gatekeeper of the college.top

PANIPAT
Girl rescued:
The police recovered a girl who had allegedly been abducted from Samalkha, from Gaziabad, Mr Manoj Yadav, district police chief, said here on Friday that a complaint had been registered by Mr Raghubir of Karhans village in this regard. The girl was rescued from the custody of Harkesh. A case under Section 363, and 366, IPC, has been registered against the accused.

Gang busted: The police on Friday claimed to have busted a gang of robbers who were reportedly planning to loot a liquor shop. Five of them have been arrested and a case registered against them.

SIRSA
Police post upgraded:
The Odhan police post was upgraded to a police station on Friday. The district police chief, Mr B.S. Sandhu, inaugurated it. The police station will now cover 21 villages.

Voters' list: A computerised list of voters will be published from April 10. Dr Avtar Singh, Chief Election Officer and Deputy Commissioner, said if any person had completed 18 years on January 1, 1999, and was resident of Sirsa could file his claim complaint at farm No 6 and 7 from April 24 to 25 and May 8 to 9, respectively and submit it to the District Public Relation Officer and other officers concerned for various Vidhan Sabha constituencies by May 10.

Opium: Bhagwanaram of Rajpura village in Rajasthan was arrested allegedly for possessing 850 gm of opium on Friday. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered.

SONEPAT
3 held:
The CIA staff of the district police has arrested three persons allegedly involved in leaking a question paper for the entrance test of the JBT course held on September 13. The SP told mediapersons here on Saturday that the arrested persons had been identified as Shyam Sunder and Joginder both of Delhi, and Jai Bhagwan of Saboli village in Sonepat. The number of arrests made by the police in this regard has gone up to seven.

Scheme for farmers: The Haryana Warehousing Corporation has decided to launch a scheme to provide financial assistance to farmers against their produce deposited in its warehouses in different parts of the state. According to official sources, the scheme will be initially introduced in Ambala and Kurukshetra districts during the ensuing rabi season.top

Mahila Congress:

HAMIRPUR
Resin producers:
The Himachal Pradesh Kisan Vikas Resin Producers Mahasangh has expressed concern over the failure of the state government to help resin producers of the state. Mr Raj Kumar, general secretary of the mahasangh, in a statement on Saturday urged the government to give a good price for resin.

KANGRA
Killed:
Gopal Dass (32) of Khola village was killed in a clash over a land dispute on Thursday, the police said. Two of his cousins have surrendered and his aunt Khusialia Devi has been arrested under Section 302, IPC.

SUNDERNAGAR
Appointed: Mr Vijay Kapil has been appointed organising secretary of the Himachal Pradesh Seva Dal by Mr B.R. Gautam, Chairman, Himachal Pradesh Seva Dal.

Residents' plea: Residents of Kalohad village have urged the Chief Minister to issue directions to the I and PH Department to make handpumps installed about a month ago functional. The I and PH Minister, Mr Ramesh Dhawala, had also issued directions to the department to make the handpumps functional when he visited the town but so far no steps have been taken.top
