ABOHAR
Killed: Madan Lal Sagar, a PSEB
employee, was killed and his brother Krishan Lal
Sagar, Mrs Krishna Devi, Mrs Sumanlata and Mrs
Jaimala, injured when the Tata Sumo in which they
were travelling collided with trucks first on way
to Ludhiana and then on return journey on
Saturday. The family had gone to condole the
death of their brother-in-law, Kulwinder Pal
Rana, at a village near Ludhiana. The injured
were admitted to the Civil Hospital here.AMRITSAR
Jawan arrested: The police arrested a home
guard Tarsem Singh, during a campaign launched
against anti-social elements on Friday. Mr G.S.
Sahota, SSP, said the jawan used to collect money
from truck drivers on the Tarn Taran road. A toy
pistol, fake identity card and a scooter without
number plate have been seized from him.
Attack
condemned: Representatives of various social,
journalist and political associations have
condemned attack on Mr Sham Sunder Soni, a
younger brother of Mr Kumar Soni, a correspondent
of a Jalandhar based newspaper. He was allegedly
attacked by five persons when he was on way home.
The Chheherta police has arrested one assailant.
FAZILKA
Pistol recovered: The BSF has recovered a
Pakistani-made .30 bore pistol from the sewer of
the headquarters of 200 battalion of the BSF.
GURDASPUR
Camp: The district Red Cross Society
organised a camp for the physical handicapped
here on Saturday. As many as 60 tricycles, 30
wheel chairs, 200 crutches, 20 collars, 50
walking sticks and 25 belts were distributed
among the needy. The camp was sponsored by the
Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment,
Government of India. Mr Vinod Khanna, MP, was the
chief guest.
HOSHIARPUR
Railway committee: Mr Natish Kumar, Union
Railway Minister, has nominated Mr Harish Saini,
President, Yuva Samata Party, Punjab, as member
of the Railway Users Consultative Committee,
Ferozepore division, for a period of two years,
according to the spokesman of the Railways here
on Saturday. The Minister has nominated seven
other members under this category. The General
Manager of the Ferozepore division has nominated
one member.
KAPURTHALA
Three killed: Three persons were killed in
two different road accidents near the town on
Friday. Kaman Yadav (22) and Suka Nand (24),
residents of Sapol in Bihar, were killed when
their scooter collided with a vehicle near the
rail coach factory. In another accident, Jagir
Singh (40), a resident of Patti, was killed when
his scooter collided with against a
tractor-trailer near Bhawanipur village.
Case
registgered: The police has registered a case
against Mrs Surjit Kaur and her son, Baljit
Singh, alias Bali, of Improvement Trust Colony on
a charge of murdering Lakhwinder Singh, her
another son, under Section 302 of the IPC. The
police has arrested Baljit Singh, while his
mother is still at large. The property dispute is
said to be cause of the crime.
KHARAR
Case registered: The Kurali
police has registered a case under Section 302 of
the IPC against Amarjit Singh of Kalewal village
for allegedly murdering a labourer, Gurmukh
Singh. The police said on Saturday, that the
labourer had gone to his house for white wash.
The body was found next day in the village.
Free camp:
As many as 450 patients were examined in a free
medical camp organised in Grewal Hospital here on
Saturday. The camp was inaugurated by the local
MLA, Mrs Daljeet Kaur. The camp was organised
with the help of the Lions Club (Nightingale),
Chandigarh. According to Dr Surinder Kaur Grewal,
in charge of the hospital, next camp would be
held on April 9 here.
Appointed:
Mr Gurmakh Singh, has been appointed
president of the Ex-Servicemen cell of the Punjab
Pradesh Congress Committee, Ropar district,
according to a press release issued here on
Saturday.
LUDHIANA
National symposium: A two-day national
symposium on "HRD Requirements of
Biotechnology Industry in Agriculture
Sector," concluded at Punjab Agricultural
University here on Saturday. The symposium was
attended by as many as 100 participants from
different parts of the country. During the
symposium 27 eminent scientists, including the
Council of Scientific and Industrial Research,
the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and
the All India Biotechnology Association,
presented their papers.
Convocation: The
convocation of the local Government College for
Women was held on Saturday. Mr G.P.S. Sahi,
Principal Secretary, Higher Education and
Languages, Punjab, was present on the occasion.
As many as 500 students were awarded degrees,
medals, roll of honour and merit certificates.
MOGA
Body recovered: The Baghapurana police
recovered a tin box containing the body of Geja
Singh from his house in Gholiakalan village on
Saturday. The body had been wrapped in clothes
and locked in the box for several months. The
police interrogated the wife of the deceased. The
body was sent for a post-mortem examination.
NAWANSHAHR
Cheques distributed: Dr Roshan Sunkaria,
Deputy Commissioner, while presiding over a Vikas
Samagam organised at Banga, 13 km from here, on
Saturday distributed cheques worth Rs 11 lakh
among 11 panchayats of Banga block which were
elected unanimously. He exhorted them to
strengthen the literacy drive in the district.

Honoured: Mr T.N. Sharma and Dr R.M.S. Bajwa,
members of the Lions Club (International), were
honoured by Mr Manoranjan Kalia, Health Minister,
for helping poor, according to a press release of
the club here on Saturday.
Cooperative
bank: Mr Sukhdev Singh has been elected
Chairman, while Mr Jarnail Singh and Mr Tejinder
Pal Singh Sandhu have been elected Vice-Chairman
and M.D., respectively, of the Patiala Central
Cooperative Bank.
Eye camp: As
many as 103 operations have been performed at a
free eye camp held at Nabha. The camp was
organised by the Durga Seva Mandal and the Aarthi
Association, Nabha, according to a press release
issued here on Saturday.

New telephone exchange: A new telephone
exchange (C-DoT-512) has been commissioned at
Singh Bhagwantpur village to meet the long-
pending demand of telephone connections in 18
villages. The villages are Singh Bhagwantpur,
Chupki, Brahaman Majra, Dulchi Majra, Rod Majra,
Chaklan, Cheerian, Kabron, Bhago Majra, Mugal
Majri, Sihon Majra, Goslan, Khabra, Solkhian,
Behrampur Zimidara, Asmanp and Pathar Majra. Mr
J.S Sahota, Telecom District Manager, Ropar, said
here on Sunday that 296 telephone connections
would be released from this exchange and the
waiting list of more than 250 applicants would be
cleared pending since 1992. He said all
connections would be released by the first week
of April. He said the STD facility would be
provided to the subscribers on demand. The
dynamic code facility was also available in this
exchange.
