AMRITSAR
Seminar:
A seminar on "Importance of Kabir bani", was held here on Friday at the conference hall of Guru Nanak Dev University. It was organised by Sant Kabir Chair, Bhagat Namdev Chair and Guru Ravidass Chair of the university in association with All India Radio, Jalandhar. Dr H.S. Soch, Vice-Chancellor, presided.

HOSHIARPUR
Prohibitory orders:
Mr Iqbal Singh Sidhu, District Magistrate, has ordered all house owners in the district to give complete information about their tenants to their respective police stations. He also reimposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC.

JALANDHAR
Eye operation camp:
The Madan Mohan Lal Sondhi Charitable Trust will organise a free eye operation camp at Phillaur on Wednesday and Friday. Dr C.P. Bansal, Civil Surgeon, here will inaugurate the camp. Medicines and spectacles will be given free of cost to patients.

Service mela: The canteen stores department (CSD), Jalandhar Depot, will organise an after sales service mela at Jalandhar cantonment on Monday. This was stated by Mr K.P. Singh, Area Manager, (CSD), here on Friday.

Memorandum submitted: The Paindu Majdoor Union submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioners in the state on Friday in protest against the anti-poor policies of the Punjab Government. The Union sought better economic conditions, health centres and schools for their children.Members of the union will hold a rally on March 30.

LUDHIANA
Medical camp:
A free medical camp was organised by the Ludhiana Cultural and Social Welfare Club, Rishi Nagar, here on Friday. Mr Gobind Singh Kanjhla, Minister for Youth Services, Public Grievances, Pensions and SC/BC Welfare, Punjab was the chief guest.

MALERKOTLA
Medical camp:
At least 300 patients were examined at a free medical check-up camp organised by the Mullowal branch of the State Bank of Patiala, 20 km from here, on Thursday.

NAWANSHAHR
Workshop:
The Punjab State Council of Science and Technology and the Punjab Sugarfed organised a three-day workshop here at Doaba Cooperative Sugar Mill Limited which concluded on Saturday. The workshop was inaugurated by the Additional Director, Sugarfed, Mr A.S Pannu.

PATIALA
Computerised branch:
The local branch of Indian Overseas Bank, started functioning as a computerised branch from Friday. Mr R.P.S Pawar, Commissioner, Patiala division, inaugurated it.

Celebrated: Escorts Mahle Goetze Limited here celebrated the "National Safety Day" on its premises at Bahadurgarh on Friday. Mr S. Ahluwalia, associate vice-president of the plant, spoke about the utility of the safety measures.

Programme: The Indian Medical Association here will hold a medical education programme on HIV (AIDS) on Sunday at the library of Government Medical College, according to a press note of the association issued here on Friday.

Camp: A blood donation camp will be organised at Maharaja Palace near the Bikram College of Commerce here on March 14 by the local Lions Club (Fort), according to Mr Vijay Kumar Goyal, President of the club, here on Friday.

Invited: Dr K.C. Mittal of the Department of Business Management has been invited to present a paper at the first world congress of colleges and polytechnics being held in Quebec City in May, 1999. Dr Mittal will present his paper on the development of entrepreneurship" in the Indian context.

Poetical symposium: Khayal, a local cultural organisation, will organise a seminar-cum-poetical symposium on ‘Secrets of love’ at Gandhi Bhavan in Panjab University on March 12. Mr B.M. Sagar of Baba Farid Chair of the university and Janab Sabir Abohari will be the main participants, Mr H.S. Ahluwalia, convener of the organisation, announced here on Saturday.

Bank counter: An extension counter of Syndicate Bank was inaugurated at MRA Modern Public School, Sector 7, here on Friday by Ms Shakuntala Mahajan, Director of the JB Charitable Trust. Mr N.N. Reddy, General Manager of the bank, presided.

KHARAR
Ban: The Deputy Commissioner, Ropar, has imposed a ban on the use of loud speakers from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. in the district, according to a public announcement made here today. The ban has been imposed in view of examinations and would be in force till April 30.

BHIWANI
Body found:
The police here found the body of Avtar Singh (45) of the local Hanuman Dhani on Saturday. He was working as a driver. Some injury marks were found on the body. A case has been registered.

FARIDABAD
Gang busted:
The police here claims to have busted a gang of thieves operating in Delhi and Haryana. Two Maruti cars have been recovered from them.

Flower show: A flower show will be organised at Town Park, Sector 12, on Sunday. According to Ms G. Anupama, Administrator, HUDA, the show will be inaugurated by Mr B.K. Panigrahi, Deputy Commissioner. Mr Krishan Pal Gujjar, Haryana Transport Minister, will give away the prizes.

HISAR
Workshop:
An agricultural workshop was inaugurated here on Friday. The Vice-Chancellor of Haryana Agricultural University, Prof J.B. Chowdhary, presided and expressed concern over the problems arising due to waterlogging, salinity and pest infestation.

Murdered: Sunita (25), a married woman, was murdered at Bhatla village, the police said here on Friday. According to a complaint lodged by Jaibir, father of the girl, she had gone to the fields for cutting grass, but failed to return home. A case under Section 302, IPC, has been registered.

KAITHAL
Karamchari sangh:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Sarv Karamchari Sangh: President — Mr Madan Lal Saini; Vice-President — Mr Satbeer Goyal; Secretary — Mr Mohinder Singh; and Treasurer — Mr Balbir Singh.

Inaugurated: The Additional Deputy Commissioner, Mr Lal Singh, inaugurated the building of a primary school constructed under the district primary education programme at Balu village on Friday. He called upon the villagers to send their wards to schools so that they were not deprived of the basic primary education.

Orders imposed: The District Magistrate has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 in the district to check crime on national and state highways. Hotels and dhabas owners have also been told not to open their establishments after 11 p.m. These orders will remain in force till further orders.

SHAHABAD
Salaries not paid:
A high-level deputation of the Haryana Non-Government College Principals Association brought to the notice of the Financial Commissioner and Secretary, Education Department, Haryana, Mr Vishnu Bhagwan, here that their salaries had not been paid for the past three months. They also sought new pay grades as recommended by the UGC.

SIRSA
Sewerage system:
Resentment prevails among residents of the local Agarsain Colony against the public health authorities for not maintaining the sewerage system in the area. Members of the Agarsain colony Sudhar Samiti alleged the sewerage system had totally collapsed and in spite of repeated complaints, no action had been taken so far.

Sentenced: Beer Singh, Gopal Singh and Billu Singh of Bharolianwali village in the district were awarded three years’ imprisonment and fined Rs 700 each in a case registered against them under Sections 323,324 and 326, IPC, here on Friday. According to the prosecution, all three accused entered the house of Madho Singh of the same village and attacked him with sharpedged weapons.

Injured: Krishan Kumar of Ellenabad, 40 km from here, was seriously injured with sharpedged weapons by Tej Bhan and his brother, Sahib Ram, at Ellenabad town, on Friday. A case has been registered under Sections 323, 324, 285, 504 and 34, IPC.

SONEPAT
Assault:
A group of armed persons assaulted a 25-year-old youth, Virender, of Kurar village at the Civil Hospital on Friday and escaped after injuring him. According to a report, the youth had come to the hospital for seeing a patient. A case has been registered.

Vaccination camp: The local Manav Seva Trust will organise a free MMR vaccination camp on Sunday at the municipal park near the library of the trust in the city. Mr Subhash Lohia, industrialist, will inaugurate the camp.top

KULU
Shram shivir:
A two-day shram shivir organised by the local Nehru Yuva Kendra at Kalehali village, 15 km from here, concluded on Friday. Mr Lal Singh, District Youth Coordinator, said a block-level sports and cultural meet would be held on Monday.

SHIMLA
Dead:
Veteran BJP leader and former MLA Brij Lal died at Dharamsala on Friday after a prolonged illness. He was 84.
