ABOHAR
Protest march:
A large number of citizens joined a protest march organised jointly by the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha and the Rashtriya Suraksha Samiti here on Friday to express resentment over the barbaric acts of the Pakistan forces in the Kargil sector. The procession, carrying an effigy of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, started from a local temple and after passing through main roads of the town it terminated at old grain market where the protesters burnt the effigy of Mr Sharif.

Suspended: Mr R.S Brar, Managing Director, Fazilka Cooperative Sugar Mills, Bodiwal Peetha, near here has been placed under suspension. He had been arrested by a special squad of the Vigilance Department for allegedly accepting gratification from a sugar dealer for supply of 200 bags of sugar. Mr Brar has been replaced by Mr Amarnath Chauhan, who took charge on Friday.

FAZILKA
Doorstep medical aid:
Dr V.K Bassi, Civil Surgeon, Ferozepore, in a press conference here on Saturday, said that two medical teams had been constituted to provide door-to-door medical aid to the villagers in the Fazilka sector along the Indo-Pak border. Each team comprises a doctor and para-medical staff. One team has been constituted from the Civil Hospital, Fazilka, while other from the Primary Health Centre, Dabwala Kalan village. These teams shall also provide medical aid to jawans also in remote areas on-the-spot.

GURDASPUR
Held:
The police arrested Karnail Singh, alias Jhilli and Sukhdev Singh, alias Sukha, both residents of Bajurowal in this district, on Saturday. They were involved in several cases of theft. According to Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP, a case under Sections 379 and 411, IPC, has been registered against them.

HOSHIARPUR
Arrested:
The Tanda police had arrested Baljit of Kotla Gujran under police station Jhander, Amritsar district, and seized 10 kg poppy husk from him, a press note by Mr R.P. Mittal, SSP, said here on Friday. In another case, the Hariana police arrested proclaimed offender Santokh Singh of Janauri village. He was wanted by the police in two cases and was declared a proclaimed offender in 1990. The city police also arrested another proclaimed offender, Kulwinder Singh of Matehgarh road. He was declared a proclaimed offender in 1996.

Fast: Nearly 40 activists of the Punjab Mulazam Sanghrash Committee observed a fast on Friday and held a rally outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office to highlight their demands. In a statement, the committee said its demands included pay scales according to the per capita income, time-scale promotions after four, nine and 14 years on the PCS pattern, bonus and DA in cash, no political interference in transfers, rent free accommodation and regularisation of the services of ad hoc employees.

PHILLAUR
Course:
A five-day course on gender sensitisation for police officers concluded at the Punjab Police Academy here on Friday. The purpose of the course was to help the police personnel understand and help in upliftment of the women in our society, informed Mr A.A. Siddiqui, Director of the academy.

Murder: A shopkeeper, Ravinder Singh, allegedly murdered his customer Kulwinder Singh with a screw driver at his shop at Sanghdesian village in the subdivision on Thursday, the police said. A minor dispute was said to be the reason behind the murder. The deceased had given his TV set to Ravinder Singh for repair and got irritated when the shopkeeper could not deliver his TV on time. The police has arrested the culprit.

SAMRALA
Drive:
The local police has started a campaign against anti-social elements, according to Mr Ashish Kapoor, SHO, Samrala. Mr Kapoor said that on the instructions of Mr R.L Bhagat, SSP, Khanna, many persons had been booked under the supervision of Mr Gurmel Singh Sidhu, DSP, Samrala. Bahadur Singh and Jaswant Singh of Shamspur village have been arrested for stealing Rs 15,000 from Manjit Kaur of the same village. In another case Kuldeep Singh of Nanglan village and Mohan Singh of Lakhanpur village have been arrested under the Gambling Act.

BARWALA
Pledged:
students of Government Senior Secondary Schools for girls and boys, along with residents, pledged on Saturday to lead a drug-free life and inspire others to do the same. The ill-effects of use of drugs were explained with the help of songs by a troupe from the Public Relations department and a talk on the subject, followed by a poster exhibition and a film show, were also held.

CHANDIGARH
Meeting:
The local Lions Club International organised a meeting on Saturday to pay homage to Kargil martyrs at the Sector 18 Lions Bhavan. In the meeting, held under the chairmanship of Mr N.K.Grover, Vice District Governor, it was decided that a blood donation camp would be held on July 14 at Sector17 Plaza.

Residents: The residents of top floors in Sector 39-D have not been getting water supply for a couple of days. In a statement issued here on Saturday, Mr Raghbir Singh said despite complaints to the authorities concerned, nothing had been done.

Participation: The Chandigarh Pradesh Balmiki Sabha has decided to participate in the 'shobha yatra' to be taken out on the 601th birth anniversary of Saint Kabir on Sunday by the Satguru Kabir Mahasabha. Mr H. C. Kalyan, President of the sabha, appealed to the people on Saturday to participate in it.

Concluded: The Chandigarh Adventure Festival, organised by the Chandigarh Adventure Association, concluded on Saturday. The group returned from an expedition on Friday.

KHARAR
Alleged:
Mr Balwinder Singh, President of the Yuvak Bhalai and Sabhyacharak Club, Simble Majra, alleged on Saturday that though two Punjab ministers and an MP had declared that the packi Rurki-Simble Majra road would be repaired, nothing had been done so far. He said Mr Harnaik Singh Gharuan, Mr Govind Singh Kanjhla and Ms Satwinder Kaur Dhaliwal, besides senior officers, had announced in public meetings that the road would be repaired soon.

Camp: Under the leadership of Mr J.P. Dhiman, President, and Mr Harpreet Singh Rekhi, Secretary, the local Rotary Club will organise its last camp for 1998-99 under the "Dream for Future" project of Rotary District 3080 on Sunday at 9 a.m. in KTM Colony, Khanpur. According to Project Chairman, Mr M.K. Rajan, poor and needy children of KTM and Bangala colonies, who had received the first dose of immunisation, would be vaccinated against hepatitis-B.

Rally: About 100 students carrying banners on the ill-effects of drug abuse participated in a rally on Saturday organised by students from a senior secondary school to mark international drug awareness day.top

BHIWANI
Dowry case:
The police has arrested all accused involved in the murder of Munni of Kakroli Hatti. Munni was murdered on June 22. A complaint of murder was registered with the police by Tarachand, cousin of Munni, at Badhra police station. Mr S.S. Deswal, SP, said here on Saturday that Tara Chand had alleged in his complaint that Sanjeet, husband of the deceased was a teacher in Rajasthan and a drunkard. Munni had been tortured several times to bring more dowry. The police has arrested mother-in-law Bhateri, Umed Singh, Sanjeet And Urmila in this connection under Sections 304B/34, IPC.

PANIPAT
Training camp:
A week-long state-level training camp was organised by the Bajrang Dal, Haryana at S.D. Vidya Mandir, which concluded on Thursday. The camp was inaugurated by Mr Parduman, State President of Bajrang Dal. It was attended by about 60 newly recruited members of the dal from various districts.
Muslims protest: Local Muslims, led by Mr Matloob Ahmed, took out a procession through the main bazars of the city on Friday in protest against the infiltrators sent by Pakistan in the Kargil sector. They raised slogans against Mr Nawaz Sharif and the ISI and also burnt an effigy of Mr Sharif at the main Lal Batti Chowk on the GT Road.

Cases registered: The Panipat police registered cases against 29 hotel and dhaba owners of Samalkha and Panipat and arrested them for disobeying the order of the Deputy Commissioner, which calls for closing the hotels and dhabas on the G T Road from 12 mid night to 4 a.m. with a view to checking the incidents of crime.

SONEPAT
Medical camp:
As many as 80 operations were performed and more than 300 patients were treated at a three-day special camp organised by the District Red Cross Society for the orthopaedically handicapped persons, which concluded at the Civil Hospital here on Saturday. Mr P.K. Mahapatra, Deputy Commissioner, inaugurated the camp. Mrs Nivodita Mahapatra, president of the Hospital Welfare Society, said the indoor patients were provided board and lodging facilities, besides food, fruit and milk, free of cost, on behalf of the District Red Cross Society.

Yoga camp: Mr Surinder Dev Maharaj, inaugurated a four-day yoga camp at Shri Yoga Abhyas Ashram here on Friday.

Resentment: Resentment prevails among owners and operators of auto-vehicles over the sale of adulterated petroleum products in this city and elsewhere in the district due to the 'failure' of the authorities concerned to check the menace. Many operators alleged that their complaints to the authorities concerned had fallen on deaf ears.

Indefinite fast: An indefinite fast started by six traders of the mandi area in protest against the inadequate and erratic supply of power and drinking water and the non-repair of the roads, entered the third day on Saturday. Mr Jatinder Jain, President of the Traders Association, Rohtak road, Mr Shyam Lal Gupta, a Municipal Councillor of the area, Mr Kishan Mukhi, President of the Mission Chowk Market Association and Mr Raj Singh Dalai, SBSP leader, are among the leaders who had started the fast.top

NURPUR
Bandh:
Shopkeepers of Nurpur and Jawali subdivisions observed a complete bandh to express their sympathies with the bereaved families of two soldiers of Jawali subdivision who laid down their lives in ‘Operation Vijay’ in Kargil. Their bodies were cremated with full state honours at their native village on Saturday. The shopkeepers of the town also took out a procession and burnt an effigy of Mr Nawaz Sharif.
