CPI withdraws support
PONDICHERRY, July 22 (PTI) The Communist Party of
India (CPI) today withdrew support to the DMK-led
coalition in Pondicherry. The withdrawal of support was
announced by Agriculture Minister r Vishwanathan and the
partys Pondicherry unit secretary N Kalainathan. Train robbery
ALLAHABAD, July 22 (UNI) Dacoits raided a
compartment of the Pawan Express and injured seven
passengers, two of them seriously, before looting
articles and jewellery worth lakhs of rupees last night.
According to the Deputy Superintendent of Police,
Railway, Mr Dinesh Singh, the dacoits boarded the train
at Varanasi. After the loot, they pulled the alarm chain
of the train between Ramnathpur and Jhusi railway
station, a few kilometres from here, and escaped.
Ahmedabad curfew
AHMEDABAD, July 22 (UNI) The police fired at least
seven rounds in the air to disperse a rioting mob in the
Kalupur area of the walled city after the 11 hour curfew
relaxation for women and children in Dariapur and Kalupur
areas ended this evening. The city control room here said
most of the relaxation period passed off peacefully in
Dariapur and Kalupur but fresh incidents of violence were
reported from other parts of the city. In one of these
incidents in Dabgarwad locality, the police fired in the
air when two groups indulged in stone throwing.
1 killed in
blast
GUWAHATI, July 22 (UNI) At least one person was
killed and 15 were injured, five of them seriously, in a
time device explosion at N.K. Daranga village bordering
Bhutan in Assam's Nalbari district today, official
sources said. The time device was suspected to be planted
by the Bengali Tiger Force (BTF). The injured were
admitted to the medical college and hospital here, where
the condition of two was stated to be critical. The other
injured were treated at a hospital in Bhutan.
Kidney donation
BANGALORE, July 22 (UNI) In a rare gesture, an
employee of the Aeronautical Development Establishment
(ADE) here has come forward to donate one of his kidneys
to jawans injured in the Kargil operations. Adl Technical
Assistant N. Sham Prasad has given a declaration to this
effect to the ADE director. Mr Prasad had so far donated
his blood about 40 times, according to a release by ADE
civilian Employees Union, here today.
