HOSHIARPUR
Two held for murder:
The murder case of Bhagwanti of Bassi Daulat Khan has been solved. The body of the old woman had been found in an abandoned well of the village on July 6. While giving the details of the case, Mr R.P. Mittal, SSP, said here on Friday that Satnam Singh, alias Nitta, and Narinder Kumar, alias Lala, both residents of Bassi Daulat Khan village, had been arrested in this connection.

MOGA
Four arrested:
The district police, on a complaint by members of the Moga Cable Boosters and Television Operators Association, has arrested Manmohan Singh, alias Bantu, a resident of Rajeana village, Jagdeep Singh, Ranjit Singh and Surjit Singh, all local residents, following the recovery of cable wires, boosters and a stolen Maruti car from them. A case has been registered against them.

NAWANSHAHR
Medical camp:
The Guru Nanak Mission Medical and Educational Trust Dhahan Kaleran in collaboration with an NRI, Mr Balbir Singh, organised a free medical check-up camp at Kang Jagir village, about 15 km from here, on Friday. Mr Budh Singh Dhahan, president of the trust, inaugurated the camp in which a team of doctors from Guru Nanak Mission Hospital examined more than 800 patients suffering from various ailments. Twenty major eye operations were also performed, according to a press note of the trust, issued here on Saturday.

PHAGWARA
Chlorination demand:
18 cases of intestinal diarrhoea have been reported from Phagwara, allegedly caused by contaminated water. The local Citizens Rights Forum on Sunday demanded adequate chlorination of water to ensure that the outbreak did not convert into an epidemic or degenerate into gastroenteritis.

Media watch: Mr BK Srivastava, Commissioner, Jalandhar division stressed that NGOs should act as watchdogs over the media and the law enforcement agencies. He was speaking at the installation ceremony of the local Rotary Club Central here. He said the media, being a very potent medium, required close scrutiny.

Netaji conference:
Mr Debabratta Biswas, Member Parliament and General Secretary of All-India Forward Bloc, will inaugurate a two-day All-India Netaji Conference here on July 24. Mr DBL Kalmankar, Chairman, Karnataka Legislative Council, will be the chief guest while Mr Ashok Ghosh, General Secretary of the West Bengal unit of the Forward Block will preside over the inaugural function.

SANGRUR
Complaints redressed:
Mr Anirudh Tewari, Deputy Commissioner, visited Kunus village near Tapa in Barnala subdivision of this district to redress rural grievances on Saturday. As many as 32 complaints were received and 19 solved on the spot. The remainder were referred to the concerned departments with instructions to settle them within a fortnight.

AMBALA
Minor raped:
A minor girl was raped by two youths near Barara, 20 km from here, on Friday. According to the police, the youths belonging to Ladwa, came to the girl's school. They told her teacher that as her grandmother had expired, they had come to take her. The teacher allowed the girl to go when she said she knew the youths. The youths took her on their motor cycle and raped her in a field. A case has been registered against the youths who have been identified.

KAITHAL
Body found:
The police found the body of a 28 to 29-year-old unidentified man from the railway track near the Teek Railway station on the Kaithal-Kurukshetra railway line on Friday. The body was found in two pieces and brought to the Civil Hospital here for post-mortem examination. The deceased was wearing a blue-coloured terricot shirt, green vest and trousers, the police said.

KALKA
Attacked:
Three persons attacked Tehsildar Bir Singh Kaliraman and his Reader in his office here on Friday. They misbehaved and abused both of them. The police has arrested one of them, Ashok Kumar, while the other two managed to run away.

SIRSA
Sentenced:
One Bali Ram was sentenced by the District Court to one year's imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs 2,000 in a case of breaking a wall thrice thereby injuring one.

SONEPAT
Enterprising thieves:
Three cases of theft were reported from one part of Gohana town, 36 km from here on Saturday night. Thieves struck in an area where a Bhagwati Jagran was being conducted and the power supply was off. The combination of noise and dark gave an opportunity to the thieves to commit the crimes unmolested. According to a report reaching here, the thieves entered the house of Rameshwar in Hukam Chand Mandi and escaped with Rs 61,000 in cash and valuables. The thieves also entered the house of one Rajinder alias Bhoola and stole Rs 500. A third theft of Rs 30,000 was committed in the house of Pawan Goel.

Enquiry sought: Inhabitants of Bega, Mamarpur and other villages on Sunday demanded stern action against the officials responsible for the non-completion of flood control work along the Yamuna. They also demanded a high-level probe into the alleged use of sub-standard material in the construction and strengthening of stone studs.

Fratricide: Partap Singh, a retired inspector of Haryana Roadways was murdered, allegedly by his brother Dharma and his two sons — Raj Singh and Raj Kumar — at Mundlana village about 40 km from here on Saturday. According to a report reaching here, a dispute over land is stated to be the cause of the murder. The alleged assailants managed to escape immediately after the murder and a hunt is on to apprehend them.

Camp for disabled: Mr Anil Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, inaugurated a two-week long welfare camp for the disabled on the campus of Aggarwal Dharamshala here today. The camp has been organised by a number of social organisations in coordination with the District Red Cross Society. It will provide artificial limbs to all handicapped persons free of cost.top

BILASPUR
Navratra fair:
The District Administration here has completed arrangements for smooth conduct of the Shrawan Ashtami Navratra fair from August 12 to August 21 at Shri Nainadevi shrine, 75 km from here. Presiding over a meeting of district officers regarding mela arrangements here on Saturday Deputy Commissioner Ramesh Kapil said 10 to 12 lakh pilgrims are expected to visit the fair and the entire mela area has been divided into nine sectors to regulate crowds.

Cataract operations: Deputy Commissioner Ramesh Kapil while presiding over the District Blindness Control Society here on Saturday said 734 cataract operations had been performed at free eye camps in the district during the past year and the achievement was 105 per cent. Bilaspur district stood second in this matter in the entire state, he added.

CHAMBA
Fill post, says SFI:
The district unit of the Students Federation of India demanded that the state government fill vacant posts of lectures in the local government college. It also demanded the filling of post of laboratory assistants.
