Bharat Ratna for Ravi Shankar
NEW DELHI, Jan 30 (PTI) — The Bharat Ratna was today conferred on internationally acclaimed sitar exponent Ravi Shankar and posthumously on a freedom fighter from Assam, Gopinath Bordoloi, by President K.R.Narayanan.

Emergency landing
CHENNAI, Jan 30 (PTI) — Union Minister Thambi Durai and 69 other passengers on-board a private airlines aircraft had a providential escape last night. The pilots of the Sahara Airlines’ Boeing 737 on a Chennai-Delhi flight reported 26 minutes after its take off at 9.40 pm that all its directional instruments including radio compass, magnetic compass and very high omni range radar (VOR) were not functioning, Airport Authority of India Sources here said. However, the air traffic controller on duty skilfully guided the aircraft to about three nautical miles till its touch down at 10.25 pm on a full scale emergency.

Bus looted
JAIPUR, Jan 30 (PTI) — Armed miscreants looted the passengers of Rajasthan Roadways bus near Sanpur in Banswara district last evening, police said here today. some unidentified persons, travelling in the bus, which started from Banswara, stopped it at Hanumanji-ka-Ghata on the Madhya Pradesh border at gunpoint and robbed the conductor of Rs 4,070 apart from looting the passengers of gold and silver ornaments and cash, they said.

30 hurt in derailment
GONDA, Jan 30 (PTI) — Thirty people were injured, three of them seriously, when nine bogies of the Agra-Chappra express derailed near Mejapur railway station, about 19 km from here, early today, official sources said. The train was on its way to Lucknow from here and the derailment occurred at around 4.40 am this morning as it crossed the Chitwapur crossing near Mejapur station, District Magistrate Navnet Sahghal told PTI.

2 nuns killed
ROME, Jan 30 (AFP) — Two nuns belonging to Mother Teresa’s order, who were abducted earlier this month in the Sierra Leone capital Freetown, have died in captivity, the Rome-based missionary news agency Misna reported today. A monk and five nuns belonging to the Missionaries of Charity were kidnapped on January 14 in the Eastern Kissy district of Freetown. The monk and three other nuns have been freed.

Rao's son gets bail
HYDERABAD, Jan 30 (PTI) — Former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao’s son P.V. Prabhakar Rao was today released on bail by the special judge for economic offences court in a case of violation of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act. Granting bail, the special judge asked him to execute a personal bond for a sum of Rs three lakh with two sureties for the like amount.Top
