BANUR
Computer Centre: Punjab Finance Minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh said technical education needed to be made job-oriented to help unemployed youth of the state. Speaking after laying the foundation stone of Shaheed Udham Singh Computer Training Centre here, Capt Kanwaljit Singh said the centre envisaged to be built here would be the first in the country to offer diploma courses in 22 trades, including refresher courses.

BATHINDA
Grant for library: Mr Chiranji Lal Garg, State Minister for Food and Supply has announced a grant of Rs 50,000 for the library of Bathinda Tax Bar Association. In a press note issued here on Sunday, Mr Adarsh Pal Gupta, president of the association said that the bar had also urged the minister not to vacate the present sales tax office and bar room from the present premises.

Blood donation: As many as 13 units of blood were donated at a camp organised in the State Bank of Patiala, Zonal office by the Lions Club, Bathinda heritage in association with the bank to commemorate the Founder's day of Lions International.

HOSHIARPUR
Pagri ceremony:
Pagri ceremony of Mr Romesh Chander Sharma, Principal of Junior Government Polytechnic and a test panel cricket umpire was performed on Saturday. Rich tributes were paid to Mr Sharma by various political, social and religious leaders. Mr Sharma died on January 6 in a jeep accident.

JALANDHAR
Army day:
As a part of Army Day celebrations, the Vajra Corps of the Army organised an exhibition-cum-weapon display at Katoch Stadium, Jalandhar Cantonment, which will remain open till January 17. Lieutenant General Kamal Davar, General Officer Commanding , Vajra Corps inaugurated the exhibition.

Decided: In a meeting the district unit of the Bahujan Samaj Party has decided to organise rallies in every constituency in the state to lift party morale. A party press release here on Saturday said rallies would be organised on February 1,2,3,4 and 10 at Nabha, Banur -Rajpura, Ghanour-Dakala, Patiala-Samana and Shatrana, respectively.

Pension scheme: The local citizens welfare society has started a pension scheme for poor women and a scholarship scheme for poor students. In a statement here on Saturday the society's general secretary Ashok Chawla said five ladies were given Rs 150 per month as pension and ten needy students would also get a study stipend.

Appointed: Mr Jaskirat Singh Dhillon has been appointed rural general secretary of Yuva Janata Dal here, according to a press release of the Dal here on Saturday.

NANGAL
Elected:
Mr Sanjay has been elected president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, Nangal unit. He was elected unanimously in a meeting of the BJP Nangal unit conducted under the chairmanship of Mr Chander Kumar Bajaj, president, BJP, Nangal unit.

NAWANSHAHR
Mass marriage: Dr Roshan Sunkaria, Deputy Commissioner, in a press release here said that the district Red Cross Society would arrange the mass marriages of as many as 20 girls belonging to the poor families here at Baradari Club on January 20. The newly-wedded couples would be given articles of household use and blessed by social workers and prominent citizens of the district on the occasion.

SAMRALA
Meeting:
The local Bar Association held a condolence meeting to condole the death of retired Senior Sub Judge, Tara Singh who was posted here from 1971 to 1975. Mr Tara Singh Sub Judge was known for his honesty and hard work.

NSS camp: A ten-day NSS camp was held by Malwa College, Bondli, at Dayalapura village, near here, in which 120 students participated for 10 days. The students took part in cleaning of the Gurdwara and levelling the college campus.

Girl missing: Babal, alias Babu daughter of Arminder Singh , resident of Machhiwara Indra Colony, went missing on Lohri. The parents of the girl informed the local police.

Body found: The dead body of Mewa Singh , a resident of Rohle village, near here, was found last night by the local police near ITI Samrala. According to the police the deceased was an alcoholic and had died due to exposure.

Bar Association:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Bar-Association Patti: president- Mr Gurpartap Singh; secretary, Mr Amarjit Singh.

Strike: The employees of Patti Municipality are on strike since January 13 against non-payment of their monthly salary for the month of December. Mr Sohan Lal, secretary of the Union told this correspondent on Friday that they are staging demonstration and dharnas every day to stress their demand as they are not being paid their salary in time.top

Beaten up: Mr Prem Verma, correspondent of Himalaya Darpan, complained to the local police on Saturday that he was beaten up by Maruti car-borne persons near Kumbra village after he protested against their attempt to hit the scooter on which he had taken a lift. He also said he had been robbed of cash.

BHIWANI
Chetna party: Mr Shakti Singh Balmiki was appointed president of the district unit of the Haryana Chetna Party here on Saturday.

Ban sought: Mr Anil Bamlia, president, Haryana Chattra Kalyan Sangh in a letter written to the Central Information and Broadcasting Minister, Pramod Mahajan asked him to impose a ban on the serial Shaktiman. He said that this serial was affecting the children very much.

FATEHABAD
Women's federation:
The district level convention of the Democratic Woman Federation of India concluded here on Saturday. About one hundred delegates participated. Mrs Bimla Chowdhary , president of the state unit , in her inaugural speech, regretted that even after 50 years of Independence , the status of women in society was very bad.

HISAR
Farmers' relief:
The organising secretary of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee, Mr Harpal Singh Boora has criticised the government for ignoring farmers. In a statement here on Saturday , Mr Boora said, the state government had admitted that the farmers had suffered losses to the tune of Rs 2,000 crore due to the floods in September and October. He said, the government has already assessed the losses and should immediately declare compensation for the farmers.

SONEPAT
Road accident:
A speedy truck killed two boys near Drain No. 6 here on Friday. The victims have been identified as Sonu and Pawan. The police has arrested the truck driver.

Body recovered: The Ganaur police recovered the body of an unidentified man lying on Sanpera road near Bari village about 8 km from here, on Friday. The police has registered a case of murder as it is suspected that the victim was strangulated.

Demanded: Mr K.K. Sharma, President of the Sonepat Citizens Council on Saturday expressed concern over blackmarketeering of kerosene oil in the city and demanded action against erring depot-holders.top

MANALI
Foreigner dead: The body of a foreigner was found near Club House, about 2 km from here on Saturday. According to the police he was staying in a local guest house and was found near the river side. The deceased has been identified as Walter Croschke (48) , a resident of Austria. The cause of death is not known.

NAHAN
Contest: A declamation contest was held here last evening on the life and work of Swami Vivekananda in which students from various schools and educational institutions from the district participated. The function was presided over by D.C. Rakesh Kaushal. Bansi Lal of Government Shamsher Senior Secondary School, Nahan stood first in the declamation contest.
