ABOHAR
Strike:
The non-teaching staff of DAV College, Gopichand Arya Mahila College and DAV College of Education observed a stay-in strike on Friday. Mr Prabhu Dayal, general secretary of the Joint Action Committee, said the strike paralysed work in the laboratories, libraries and offices. At a joint meeting the union urged the State Government to accept the demands of the Private Colleges Non-Teaching Staff Union, Punjab, for revised grades and enhanced medical allowance and pension. The union warned that the agitation would be intensified if the government failed to take timely action.

FEROZEPORE
Open darbar:
All 30 complaints received at the open darbar held at Guruharsahai town on Friday were redressed, according to official information. The MLA, Mr Paramjit Singh Sandhu, demanded repair of the Deep Singh Wala-Guruharsahai road.

Order: Mr R G Sahota, Additional District Magistrate, issued an order on Friday prohibiting the carrying of weapons in marriage parties. The order will remain in force in the district till February-end.

Dharna: Non-teaching employees of the local R S D College, on a call given by the Punjab and Chandigarh College Non-Teaching Union held a rally at the college premises on Friday. They also staged a dharna in support of their demands regarding new pay-scales, pension and gratuity. The district president of the union, Mr Sunil Kumar said the employees may boycott the Panjab University and PSEB examinations.

GURDASPUR
Ban
: Mr S.K Sandhu, District Magistrate, passed an order on Friday banning the digging of soil by brick-kilns falling between the national highway and the Chakki River up to the limits of the district. The step has been taken as the river has diverted its course towards the national highway reducing the distance between the highway and the river to only a few metres at some places. The order will remain in force till March 12.

JALANDHAR
Elected:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the state body of the Department of Punjab Town Planning Employees Union: president — Mr Daljit Singh Dhaliwal; vice-president — Mr Parshotam Dass Joshi; general secretary — Mr Satish Kumar; and cashier — Mr Kunj Lal Kaushik.

Chief Minister: The Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, while addressing a gathering at the youth festival of SPN College at Mukerian, 50 km from here, on Friday said the political bankruptcy of the Congress could be gauged from the fact that it could not find a single individual from India who could lead the party and had made Mrs Sonia Gandhi the party President.

KHANNA
Police pensioners:
A meeting of the Punjab Police Pensioners Welfare Association was held on Friday at the police lines here and a memorandum of their demands was presented to Mr SS Bhatti, SP. The members have demanded an increase of Rs 250 as medical allowance, free bus service and honorary promotion of one rank at the time of retirement. They also demanded that the state government should implement the rule of one rank, one pension for retired policemen.

Prize distribution: Students of the local A S Modern Senior Secondary School presented a colourful cultural programme at the 28th annual prize distribution function in the school. Mr Surinder Singh Sodhi, Olympian, Arjuna Awardee and SSP, Nawanshahr gave away the prizes.

LUDHIANA
Women welfare schemes:
The Social Security and Women and Child Development Department in association with the United India Insurance Company launched the Rajrajeshwari Women Welfare Scheme and the Bhagyashree Child Welfare Policy at a state-level seminar here on Friday. The seminar was presided over by Bibi Jagir Kaur, Social Security and Women and Child Development Minister.

MOGA
Urged:
The general secretary of the PPCC, Dr Malti Thaper, and the president of the PPCC (farmers wing), Mr Satnam Singh Sandesh, urged the Centre on Thursday to order a CBI probe into the Anjana Mishra rape case and take steps to prevent the Orissa Government from shielding the culprits.

Resentment: Consumers here have expressed resentment against the non-supply of forms for getting new ration cards. They urged the civil supplies authorities on Friday to make proper arrangements for the supply of these forms.

Tributes: Tributes were paid to Dr Saif Ud Din Kitchlu, a freedom fighter and veteran leader of the country, by the staff and students of the local Doctor Saif Ud Din Kitchlu Memorial Model School at the birth anniversary function of the leader held on Friday. The Principal, Ms Farida Mudgil, urged the children to follow the teachings of the great leader, who, she said, had sacrificed his life for the country.

Lost:
A Head Constable lost his wireless set on Tuesday. According to reports, the Head Constable, Mr Mohinder Singh, was returning from a naka duty in the Panshta area when he lost the set. A case has been registered.

Meeting: The local unit of Gaddi Welfare Association at its meeting on Friday decided to form a society and construct a Gaddi Bhavan in Chandigarh besides organising classes in Gaddi language, holding free medical camps, blood donation camps and other projects of public welfare. The society decided to approach the Chandigarh Administration and the Himachal Pradesh Government in this regard.

SAS NAGAR
Rally:
A rally was organised here on Saturday to create public awareness about eradication of polio. Children attending the rally were carrying placards about Plus Polio campaign. Dr Rajinder Singh, Civil Surgeon, Ropar, flagged off the rally. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Kulbir Singh Sidhu, and Dr Rajinder Singh appealed to the people of SAS Nagar to make Ropar a polio-free district by getting their children immunised on Sunday.

BHIWANI
Seized:
The police seized 53.5 kg of charas and 1 kg of opium husk, from Chanderbhan, a resident of Sanga on Thursday. Mr S.S. Deswal, SP, said here on Friday that the police had conducted a raid after getting imformation that the accused was selling these drugs to students and innocent villagers. Chanderbhan has been arrested under Sections 18, 20, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act.

Cheating: The police has arrested three persons for cheating a clerk and his friend in the name of doubling money. The SP said that Rajesh, had alleged that he was defrauded by a photographer, Rajesh, Sunil of Jui and another person who took Rs 50,000 from him and his friend Ashok and later told them that the money had been confiscated by the police.

Boy jumps from roof: Three-year-old Bhanu Partap, of the Sarai Chopta area, hero, jumped from the third floor of his house in an attempt to emulate the here of a television serial "Shaktiman". The child however, miraculously escaped with a minor injury.

GURGAON
Lok Adalat:
A Lok Adalat organised at the Ferozepore Jhirka judicial complex was headed by Civil Judges, Mr Mewa Singh and Mr Baljeet Singh. Nearly 59 cases were settled on the spot at the adalat.

HISAR
Gang busted:
The police busted a gang of dacotis operating in the district on Friday. The SP, Mr Manjeet Singh Ahlawat, said the police raided the hideout of the dacoits and arrested five persons. Those arrested were Premchand, Jagmohan, Jaiveer, Rajesh and Naresh. Three revolvers and some cartridges were also seized from them.

KURUKSHETRA
Anti-polio rally:
To spread awareness among the masses about the pulse polio campaign, the local Rotary Club and the Health Department jointly organised an awareness rally here on Saturday. The rally was flagged off by Mr S N Roy, Deputy Commissioner. The president of the Rotary Club Dr R Bhardwaj, said anti-polio drops would be given to about 1 lakh children below the age of five years at 530 centres, including 451 in rural areas, of this district on Sunday.

SIRSA
Inaugurated:
Group Captain S. Ghosh, Station Commander of the local Air Force Station and Chairman, Kendriya Vidyalaya No 1, inaugurated a computer centre in the vidyalaya on Friday. This centre has been established by the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan.

Election promises: Mr Jagdish Nehra, former Irrigation Minister and senior Congress leader while addressing rural public meetings at various villages of the Rori Assembly segment in the district has alleged that Mr Bansi Lal had been working against people of the state and had not fulfilled his election promises.

SONEPAT
Case Registered:
The city police has registered a case under the Essential Commodities Act against Hans Raj, Manager of the Central Consumers Cooperative Stores, here for irregularities in the distribution of wheat flour among depot-holders in the city. He was charged with misappropriating 500 kg of wheat flour.

Attacked: District Administration officials and members of the demolition squad of the Municipal Council were attacked by an irate mob of shopkeepers in the mandi area near Mission Chowk on Thursday when they were demolishing unauthorised structures. The shopkeepers resisted the move and went on the rampage. They pelted stones on them . The shopkeepers kept their shutters down and blocked traffic.top

BILASPUR
Employment schemes:
The state president of the BJP, Mr Suresh Chandel, has said the government is spending over Rs 300 crore on employment schemes. These schemes will provide jobs to 1,30,000 youth during the current financial year. He was presiding over a cultural function organised by the Nehru Yuvak Kendra at Chandpur, near here, on Thursday.

Interviews: The SDM, Mr Roshanlal Rana, has said that interviews for the posts of water carriers which were earlier postponed would now be held from January 20 to 25. He urged all panchayat leaders to intimate the applicants in time.

CHAMBA
Sentenced:
Mr R L Azad, Chief Judicial Magistrate convicted Dhani Ram of Saach Nala village on Wednesday for possessing two tins of lahan weighing 15 kg each. Dhani Ram has been sentenced to one-year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000 . In case of default in the payment of fine he will have to undergo a further imprisonment of one month.

NURPUR
Cultural meet inaugurated:
A week-long national integration-cum-cultural meet organised by the Friends Club was inaugurated by Mrs Malvika Pathania, Chairperson, Himachal Pradesh Women Welfare Advisory Board, at Rey in Jawali subdivision on Friday. Cultural troupes from Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar, Haryana, Assam and Rajasthan are participating in the various competitions.
