GARHSHANKAR
Rallies: On a call given by the Punjab Chandigarh College Teachers Union, teachers of Garhshankar, Pojewal, Mahilpur colleges held a demonstration in front of their respective colleges. The teachers were demanding the implementation of new pay scales, pension, gratuity and also the release of quarterly salary grants.

Shop gutted: A readymade cloth shop at Mahilpur village was reduced to ashes in a fire on Wednesday. The cause of the fire is not ascertained.

LUDHIANA
Rally: The local Rotary Club (Central) has organised a pulse polio awareness rally in which as many as 500 school children participated and distributed handbills to create awareness among public. The club earlier organised a polio awareness exhibition at R.S.Model Senior Secondary School, according to Mr Atamjit Singh, Project Chairman of the club.

PATIALA
Punjabi Vikas Manch: The Punjabi Vikas Manch will organise a function here on January 17 in which a book, entitled "Main Gurbani De Adhar Han" by Dr Sarabjit Kaur Sandhawalia, would be released. The president of the manch said Mr Harinder Singh Khalsa, a former MP, who had been appointed a member of the Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes Minority Commission, would also be honoured on the occasion.

Mr and Miss Punjab: Rahul Mandok (Jalandhar) and Parminder Kaur Pam (Patiala) have been chosen as Mr and Miss Punjab respectively here at a function organised by the Rashtriya Jyoti Kala Manch, according to a press note issued by the manch here on Friday.

SAMANA
Blood donation camp:
The local Shere Punjab Youth Club organised a blood donation camp on Friday at Aggarwal Dharamshala. The camp was inaugurated by the Public Health Minister, Punjab. As many as 40 persons donated blood.

AMBALA
One killed: A woman was killed an six passengers were injured in an accident between a private bus and a truck near Naggal village on the Ambala-Hisar national highway on Thursday. The injured were admitted to the Civil Hospital in the city. A case has been registered.

PANIPAT
Liquor seized: The district police registered as many as 19 cases under the Excise Act in December and seized huge quantity of liquor and wine according to Mr Manoj Yadav, SP. He said under the Arms Act the police seized 20 pistols, one gun, and four cartridges in the same month.

Darbar: The district administration organised a block-level open darbar at Bapoli village, 20 km from here on Wednesday. As many as 76 complaints were received in the darbar. The Deputy Commissioner presided over the darbar.

SONEPAT
Cultural fest: Nearly 30 teams from all over the state took part in the annual inter-college cultural festival, "spectrum", organised at Hindu Girls College here on Wednesday. Different competitions, including poetry recitation, folk song, folk dance, caption writing, clay modelling and general knowledge quiz were held. Mr Shrikant Walgad, Registrar of M.D University, Rohtak, was the chief guest. Hindu Girls College won the running trophy but being a host college, it was awarded to the next best team of GVM Girls College.

HAMIRPUR
Road density: The district has earned the distinction of having the high road density of 97 km per 100 sq km. Almost all villages in the district are linked with either kutcha or pucca roads. A national highway has also been cleared to pass through the district. The Jalandhar-Mandi highway via Hamirpur will be one of the three national highways sanctioned by the Central Government recently.

KANGRA
Two suicides:
Two persons, including a housewife, on Friday committed suicide by consuming poison in the district. According to the police, Veena Devi (25) of Dandh village committed suicide. In another incident, Tilak Nath (44) of Baijnath also committed suicide.

KULU
House gutted:
A house at Burua village was gutted in a fire that broke out on Friday. Fire-engines from Manali were rushed to the spot and control the fire. The cause of the fire could not be ascertained.

SHIMLA
Power project:
The Centre has approved the Khauli Hydro Power Project (12 MW) in Kangra district. The work on the project would commence on January 24, the Chief Minister, Mr Prem Kumar Dhumal, said on Thursday. The project would be executed by the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board, he added.
