Karnataka Dy Speaker dead
BANGALORE, Jan 14 (PTI) — Karnataka Deputy Speaker Chandrashekar Mallikarjuna Mamani died at Saundatti in Belgaum district today following a massive heart attack. He was 62. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. Mamani, who represented the Parasgad Assembly seat, was elected Deputy Speaker on July 8, 1996, after his predecessor M.S. Patil was inducted into the J.H. Patel ministry. Mamani suffered cardiac failure on way to Belgaum and died, the sources said.

Sena threat
NEW DELHI, Jan 14 (PTI) — Delhi Shiv Sena chief Jai Bhagwan Goyal, who reportedly went "underground" apprehending arrest in connection with digging of Ferozshah Kotla cricket pitch here, said today that the Sena will not allow the Pakistan’s Lahore-Delhi bus go back safely". "Anything can happen to the bus which today left Lahore for Delhi on a trial run, in Punjab, Haryana and Delhi. But we will not cause any harm to passengers," Mr Goyal told reporters. "Even if the bus somehow reaches Delhi, Shiv Sainiks will not let it go back safe. We can destroy it and even burn it," Mr Goyal said.

New missile
BALASORE (Orissa), Jan 14 (PTI) — A new sophisticated surface-to-surface missile with a range of 250 km is likely to be test-fired either on January 23 or 24 from the interim test range (ITR) at Chandipur-on-sea, about 15 km from here, official sources said today. The missile, which is yet to be named by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is stated to be more powerful than the existing "Prithvi" missile, they said.

Police campaign
BHIND, Jan 14 (PTI) — The Madhya Pradesh police has launched a special campaign to fight dacoits in the ravines of the Chambal valley and other similarly affected areas. The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Pramod Sharma, told PTI five companies of the Special Armed Force (SAF) had been posted in the dacoit-affected areas. The Inspector-General said all companies were equipped with modern weapons and communication equipment with the sole objective of tackling the menace of dacoity.

Tripura violence
AGARTALA, Jan 14 (UNI) — Unidentified miscreants murdered a local CPM leader and snatched a self-loading rifle from Border Security Force jawans, while tribal guerillas kidnapped two drivers and burnt down a bridge in Tripura during the past 24 hours. The police said here today tribal militants waylaid two vehicles on the Assam-Agartala national highway's Fatikroy area in North district and abducted them at gunpoint. The ultras also burnt down a wooden bridge at Nalichara under Dhalai district cutting off communication.

13 dead in mishap
HANOI, Jan 14 (DPA) — Thirteen persons were killed and eight more seriously injured in Vietnam when a public bus overturned and burst into flames after hitting a military truck, a commune official confirmed today. Eleven bodies were pulled from the charred wreckage of the bus, which hit the truck that was having a flat tyre changed on a newly paved road in Hai Duong province, east of Hanai. Eight persons are in a nearby military hospital with serious burns. All four crew members of the bus escaped unharmed or with minor injuries.

Israeli charged
TEL AVIV, Jan 14 (AFP) — The Israeli authorities have arrested a former Arab collaborator with the Israeli Secret Service for allegedly raping Miss Israel, Linor Abargil, shortly before she was crowned Miss World in November. The police said the suspect, Shlomo Nour, raped and sodomised Abargil after she came to a travel agency he owns in Milan during a visit in September. Abargil, then 18, was named Miss World in November. Nour was arrested on Saturday on his arrival in Israel from Italy, court officials said.
