Expulsion blocked
HONG KONG, Feb 15 (Reuters) — A Hong Kong court today blocked the deportation of 18 mainland Chinese who are fighting to stay in the territory after a landmark immigration ruling last month, court officials and their lawyer said. The latest court move is likely to further strain relations between Hong Kong and Beijing, already locked in the first constitutional row since Britain returned this territory to China in 1997.

Student injured
ALIGARH, Feb 15 (PTI) — One student was injured in a clash between a group of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) students and the staff of a stall in the Aligarh Trade and Agricultural Fair last night, official sources said today.

2 die in wall collapse
NEW DELHI, Feb 15 (PTI) — Two children were killed and two others injured when the wall of a public toilet collapsed in a slum in west Delhi this afternoon. Vishal, 3 and Poonam, 2 were crushed to death when a wall of the ‘sulabh shauchalaya’ collapsed in the slum area in Uttam Nagar at around 2 p.m., fire brigade sources said.

Train picketed
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Feb 15 (PTI) — About 2,000 Opposition UDF workers led by Mr K. Karunakaran and Mr A.K. Antony today picketed the Kerala Express here demanding withdrawal of the recent price hike of commodities distributed through the public distribution system (PDS) and cooking gas.

Attack on Iraq
ANKARA, Feb 15 (Reuters) — US warplanes based in Turkey attacked Iraqi air defences in northern Iraq today, the US Air Force said in a statement faxed by the embassy in Ankara. Even as Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz was in Turkey in an attempt to persuade Ankara to end the mandate under which the joint US-British air force operates out of Incirlik air base near Turkey’s Mediterranean coast.

Jawan killed
DALTONGANJ, Feb 15 (PTI) — One jawan of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) was killed and another injured when activists of the outlawed Marxist Coordination Committee (MCC) attacked Sigsigi railway station in Palamau district of Bihar late last night, police today said.

‘Summon’ records
CHENNAI, Feb 15 (PTI) — Janata Party President Dr Subramanian Swamy today said President K.R. Narayanan should ask for all records with the Union Home Ministry on the law and order situation in Tamil Nadu to "satisfy himself" whether the Karunanidhi Government should be dismissed.

N-E insurgency
CALCUTTA, Feb 15 (PTI) — Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar today criticised the Centre’s "indifferent" attitude towards containing insurgency in Tripura and other North-Eastern states, and said no steps had been taken to stop activities of Pakistan’s ISI in the region.

CLP meeting delayed
BHUBANESWAR, Feb 15 (PTI) — The much-awaited meeting of the Legislature Congress Party (CLP) in Orissa scheduled at 4 p.m. at the state assembly today to elect its new leader has been delayed. The delay has been caused as AICC observers Pranab Mukherjee and Madhavrao Scindia were still meeting party MLAs individually to ascertain their views about a new leader, party sources said. Nearly 60 of the 83 Congress MLAs and some party MPs had conveyed their views to the observers individually.

Hooch claims 8 lives
MIDNAPORE (WB), Feb 15 (PTI) — Eight persons were killed and 27 fell seriously ill after consuming illicit country liquor at Hatkhola village in Midnapore district of West Bengal early today, the police said. The condition of nine persons was stated to be critical in Tamluk sub-divisional hospital while others were admitted to a local health centre. The police said about 50 people consumed the deadly liquor from an unauthorised spirit shop. The police rushed to the area, sealed the shop and arrested its owner.

Cop kills two
SURAT, Feb 15 (PTI) — An advocate and a prime accused in a double murder case were killed and a woman was injured when a constable opened indiscriminate firing from his service rifle at the district court premises here today. City Police Commissioner Kuldip Sharma said constable Sanjay Bhadbunjar was arrested later. The constable said his target was only Mahesh Desai, who was charged with murdering two persons, including a woman with whom Bhadbunjar had illicit relations.

Iraqi sites bombed
BAGHDAD, Feb 15 (AFP) — US jets launched fresh attacks today on Iraqi air defence sites in the wake of threats by President Saddam Hussein to strike back at bases used by allied aircraft in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. US planes attacked two sites in the northern "no-fly" zone from a base in southern Turkey, killing five Iraqis and injuring 22, some of them civilians, according to an Iraqi military spokesman. The attacks came during a visit to Turkey by Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz who called, in vain, for a halt to the use of the Turkish base to launch strikes on his country.
