GURDASPUR
Gang busted
: The police has busted a gang which allegedly committed robberies in shops selling electronic goods. According to Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP, Saleem Masih Jaspal, Narinder Singh, Ravi and Kala, Dalip Masih and Adwan Masih, all residents of this district had been arrested. The police also recovered stolen goods, including VCRs, VCPs, cameras, TVs, stereos and gold chains worth several lakh from them. Two pistols were seized from the accused.

Drive: The police, in a special drive to nab illicit distillers and liquor sellers, arrested 192 persons under the Excise Act in January. The police also seized, illicit liquor and lahan during the drive.

Birds killed: The wildlife staff posted at Magarmoodian Chhamb took into custody 37 persons for reportedly killing birds by using chemicals and other means. Out of the 37 cases reported to court, 14 related to the killing of birds by using chemicals. A fine of Rs 16,000 has been imposed on defaulters.

Honoured
: Rajvinder Singh, an immigrant poet, was honoured on Sunday by the local Literary Forum and Sirjana Kendra. He was presented the S.S. Misha Memorial Award. Mr Kirpal Singh Dhillon, former MLA, Mr Harbhajan Singh Padda, a senior Congress leader, Principal Ajit Singh, Prof Surinder Gill and Prof Ravinder Kang, also attended the function.

LUDHIANA
Cultural camp:
NSS volunteers of the College of Agriculture, Punjab Agricultural University, organised a cultural camp on Sunday in which recitation and declamation contests were held. Nuzhat Gul, Sangeeta Verma and Preety Kamal were given prizes.

PHILLAUR
Annual fete:
The annual fete of the local DAV college was inaugurated by Mr Prem Chand, SDM, here on Sunday. Mr Baldev Chawla, Deputy Speaker, Punjab Vidhan Sabha, was the chief guest. He announced a grant of Rs 50,000 for the college.

ROPAR
Prize distribution
: The annual prize distribution function of Netaji Model School was held here on Sunday. Mr Devabrata Biswas, MP and general secretary of the All-India Forward Bloc, urged the parents and students to remain vigilant against the ill-effects of cultural invasion. Mr V.P. Saini, director of the school, said the spirit of nationalism and a sense of service before self should be inculcated in the students.

Eye camp: A mega eye camp will be held at Khuda Ali Sher village on Tuesday. The camp is being held in aid of the Servants of the People Society. Prof V.K. Kak, Director-cum-Principal GMCH, Sector 32, will inaugurate the camp.

Blood donation camp: As many as 86 units of blood were collected during a camp organised by the Dr Ambedkar Institute of Hotel Management on Friday.

Cultural function: A cultural evening of folk dances and folk songs of Uttarakhand was organised by the Uttarakhand Yuva Manch at Tagore Theatre here on Sunday. Six cultural troupes belonging to different parts of Uttarakhand participated in the show.

Rally: A rally by students of Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 38 (Dadu Majra), to highlight the effects of polythene bags on the environment was flagged off by the Mayor, Mr Kewal Krishan Addiwal. The children carrying placards raised slogans against the use of polythene bags.

Function: The PGI Employees Association organised a function to celebrate Guru Ravidass Jayanti on the campus. The local MP and the Mayor were present on the occasion.

Decision hailed: The Cycle Traders Association had hailed the decision of the administration in lowering the cess on cycle tyre and tubes from eight per cent to four per cent. Mr K.K. Gupta, President of the association, said the step would not only give a fillip to the business but also generate higher revenues for the administration.

PANCHKULA
Eye camp:
As many as 53 patients were examined at a week-long eye camp organised by the Lions Club (Central) and the Lions Club, Ealing (UK) at Primary Health Centre, Pinjore, which concluded on Monday.

AMBALA
Convict dead:
Tilak Raj, a convict undergoing life imprisonment at Central Jail here, died on Saturday. He complained of giddiness and was rushed to the Civil Hospital where he was declared dead. He was a resident of Ram Kishen colony in the cantonment.

YAMUNANAGAR
Conference held:
A state conference of the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh, Haryana, concluded here on Sunday. Mr Virender Sharma, all-India Vice President of the sangh and the state Vice-President of the sangh, Mr Ghanshyam Dass, addressed the delegates.

PANIPAT
Arrested
: The CIA staff of the district police has arrested members of a gang involved in several cases of theft in the area. Mr Manoj Yadav, Superintendent of Police, said six members of the gang were arrested while they were planning a robbery. The police has seized two countrymade pistols, three cartridges, two knives and two iron rods from them.

Training camp
: A three-day training camp for panches of 18 panchayats of Naggar block in Kulu district was organised at Jagat Sukh, 7 km from here. The SDM of Manali, Mr Amrit Lal Sharma, urged the panches to ensure that the rural poor get the maximum benefit from various development schemes.
