Congress leader shot dead
GUWAHATI, December 27 (UNI) — Extremists shot dead a Congress leader, injured two state Excise Department employees and looted arms and ammunition in separate incidents in Assam since Sunday. The police said Sibsagar District Congress Committee Secretary Govinda Konwar was shot dead at his residence in Mahmara by suspected ULFA militants on Sunday. Unidentified ultras shot at and injured two state Excise Department employees while they were returning after conducting a series of raids in Namrup in Upper Assam.

Curfew in W. Tripura villages
AGARTALA, December 27 ( PTI)— Night curfew has been imposed in some insurgency-affected villages of West Tripura district to defuse tension, the police said on Monday. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC had also been promulgated in seven villages of the Bishramganj area and would continue till further orders, the police said. The orders were issued after three women were charred to death by suspected NLFT ultras in seven villages on Saturday night.

8 foreign women undertrials held
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, December 27 (PTI) — Eight foreign women undertrials of South Asian origin, who escaped from the government rescue shelter here on Sunday, were arrested hours later, in the evening, at Tirunelveli, the police said on Monday. The women, part of a 16-member group, made a sensational escape in the morning after roughing up the matron of the rescue home. However, on a tip-off, the Tamil Nadu police intercepted them at Tirunelveli while they were on their way to Mahabalipuram, near Chennai.
