three farmers were killed and several others injured in

Nations, Dec 14 (PTI) The UN Security Council, in
an effort to avoid a Russian veto and find widest
possible consensus, yesterday postponed a vote by at
least a day on the comprehensive resolution which would
send weapons inspectors back into Iraq on the promise of
lifting nine-year-old economic sanctions.
Group on telecom
NEW DELHI,
Dec 14 (UNI) Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha will
head the 10-member group on telecom and IT convergence
constituted by Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee
tonight. The Prime Minister directed the group to submit
an interim report by January 31, 2000, to strengthen the
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) through
suitable legislative amendments.

Chechen capital and clashed with rebels after

said.
26 die in mishap
MEXICO
CITY, Dec 14 (Reuters) At least 26 persons died
and 16 were injured when a bus and a cargo truck collided
on a central Mexican highway, the police said today. The
head-on crash late yesterday near Celaya in the central
state of Guanajuato killed the drivers of both vehicles
along with 24 bus passengers.
Supplementary
demands
NEW DELHI,
Dec 14 (PTI) Parliament today approved
supplementary demands for grant for 1999-2000 totalling
Rs 16,550 crore after Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha
hinted that government would bring in effect fiscal
discipline in the coming Budget session. The demands for
grant were approved after the relevant appropriation Bill
were returned by Rajya Sabha.
Japan lifts
curbs
TOKYO, Dec
14 (DPA) Japan will lift its last remaining
sanctions against North Korea, chief cabinet secretary
Mikio Aoki announced today. The sanctions to be lifted
include the suspension of food aid to North Korea and
talks aimed at establishing diplomatic ties between the
two countries.
Embassy bombing
BEIJING,
Dec 14 (DPA) The USA and China opened a new round
of talks today on payment of damages for the US air
bombing attack last May 7 on the Chinese Embassy in
Belgrade. The USA has already apologised for the attack
it and paid a total 4.5 million dollars to the families
of three Chinese journalists killed in the bombing as
well as to those injured.
Nuclear missile
MOSCOW, Dec
14 (DPA) Russia today successfully test-fired its
new SS-X27 intercontinental missile, according to Russian
wire agency reports. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and
Defence Minister Igor Sergeyev were on hand for the test
at the Plessezk space centre in northern Russia.
