The album is no let down. Possibly it wont yield the usual row of hit singles, but it has an undertow of dark emotions which pull you further in and under with each listening. Were talking about this splendid debut album by Mungal Patasar, offering rich ethnic textures, mellow beats and soothing strings. Of South Trinidadian descent, Mungal and his Pantar Group (Pan for the steelband and Tar for the Hindi word for string). Presumably termed as Indo-Calypso-Jazz the winning formula of Mungal lies with his ability to fuse pan and sitar with marvellous rhythmic control. It is very interesting to hear the combination of Indian classical raags with dancehall jungle beats. Having worked with jazz giant and calypso king Boogsie Sharpe and Harold Headley, Mungals past experience reflects here. With contribution by Wayne Tabitt, Earl Carnoran, Dawud Orr, Prashant Patsar (Mungals son) and Harold Headley, the album is all in all a beautifully conceived piece. Album of the month The biggest selling female recording artist of the 1990s back with Rainbow. Her first album of all-new material since 1997s quadruple-platinum Butterfly. And the first single from the album Heartbreaker has already made history, becoming Mariahs 14th # 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart, an achievement shared by the Beatles (20) and Elvis Presley (18-with Dont Be Cruel and Hound Dog counted as two records). Here Mariah continues to walk the line between streetwise hip-hop soul and adult-contemporary. Thank God I Found You and Petals are excellent ballads, faced together with powerful, inspirational and heartfelt lyrics. Mariah is in a rare vocal form here, offering her unattainable vocal range on tracks like Bliss (Minnie Ripperton-esque) to the gospel-tinged inspirational song Cant Take That Away (Mariahs theme). The album features a reworked version of Phil Collins hit single Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now) and a bunch of collaborations with hip-hops prominent artists of today Jay-Z, Missy Elliott, Da Brat and Snoop Dog. The headliners include X-Girlfriend, After Tonight and Did I Do That? An album for true Mariah fans. Saurabh & Gaurav
