ABOHAR
 Case registered: A case has been registered against Charanjeet Singh and his second wife under Sections 364 and 34 of the IPC on a complaint by Mr Udham Singh, a resident of Kahansinghwala village. The complainant alleged that his sister, Kirandeep Kaur who had been married legally to Charanjeet Singh had been kidnapped by the culprits.

Woman killed: The Khuiansarwar police registered a case under Section 304-B on Thursday against Jagdish , his brother, Subhash, his mother and father, all residents of Kikerkhera village. The complainant Mr Girdhari Lal had alleged that his daughter, Maya Devi had been killed by the suspects for not bringing sufficient dowry. Her body was found near a canal on Wednesday.

AMRITSAR
GND varsity elections:
The election of the Non-Teaching Employees Association of Guru Nanak Dev University will be held on August 31. Dr Sukhdev Sharma, Returning Officer, has announced the names of candidates contesting the election.

Urged: The Hindu Dharam Rakshak Dal urged the Local Bodies and Labour Minister, Mr Balramji Dass Tandon on Wednesday to take action against those responsible for the death of seven labourers, who were buried alive while repairing an unsafe building of a textile mill in the local Ghee Mandi a few days ago.

Condemned: The Amritsar Vikas Manch condemned the alleged inordinate delay in the completion of international airport project here on Wednesday. In a joint pressnote issued by Mr H.S. Bedi and Dr Charanjit Singh Gumtala, President and General Secretary of the manch, respectively, alleged that the ruling party had been wrongly projecting the international airport project as its achievement while the project had not been completed so far.

Tributes paid:
The local DAV Model School held a function on Wednesday to pay tributes to the heroes of Operation Vijay. Major General AJB Jaini, AVSM, General Officer Commanding, 9 Infantry Division, presided over the function. The Principal of the school, Mrs Santosh Vaid, presented Rs 1.25 lakh to Maj General Jaini on behalf of the school staff , students and the managing committee, for the welfare of Kargil Heroes.

FATEHGARH SAHIB
War heroes fund:
The district Ayurvedic Medical Services Association and the employees of all ayurvedic and unani dispensaries contributed Rs 13,000 to the Kargil martyrs fund. Dr Onkar Nath, President of the association, said a draft for the amount had been sent to the Punjab War Heroes Fund, Chandigarh.

HOSHIARPUR
Celebration:
The Shri Shivratri and Utsav Committee here has decided to celebrate Krishna Janamashtmi on September 2. In a press note issued on Thursday , Mr Suchinder Sharma, Geneneral Secretary of the Committee, said a procession would be taken out by all temple committees in the city in September and "Prabhat pheries" would be taken out on September 2, as a part of Janamashtmi celebrations.

Office-bearers: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Punjab University Teachers Association (Hoshiarpur branch): President — Dr Kanhaiya Lal Prashar; Vice-President- Dr (Mrs) Krishna Saini; Secretary — Dr Krishna Murari Sharma; Joint Secretary — Dr Parbhat Singh Thakur; and Treasurer — Dr Rajinder Kumar Sharma.

PATIALA
Concern:
The association of principals of government colleges of the state has expressed concern over the non-implementation of some clauses of the Punjab Government's notification of March 12, regarding the UGC notification and delay in the payment of arrears. Mr S.S. Chohan, President and Mr Inderjit Vishist, General Secretary of the association, said all principals had been placed in the same scale of Rs 17,300, irrespective of the length of their service and they had also been denied an increment . The association appealed to Mr Parkash Singh Badal to order immediate release of arrears.

ROPAR
Contributed:
The NCC cadets, associated NCC officers and members of 3 Punjab (Independent) Company NCC, Ropar, have contributed Rs 8,386 to the Army Central Welfare Fund. The staff members and students of Government Senior Secondary School, Ghanauli village, near here, also contributed Rs 17,103 to the Punjab War Heroes Family Welfare Fund while an amount of Rs 7,201 has been contributed to this fund by the gram panchayat and villagers of Jatana village near Chamkaur Sahib.

Resigned:
Mr Chanan Singh Sandhu, president of the Truck Union, here and former Vice-President of the Nagar Council, resigned from the Congress and joined the SAD (Badal) on Thursday, in the presence of Capt Kanwaljit Singh, Finance Minister, Punjab.

Salary not paid:
The staff of the Technical Department of the Punjab Agriculture Department has complained that they had not received their salaries for the last three months.

Appointed: Mr Bhupinder Singh Benipal, Chairman of the local Panchayat Samiti and a senior Congress leader, has been appointed Organising Secretary of the Punjab Congress Committee by Capt Amarinder Singh, President of the PPCC.

Conference: The Krishak Bharti Cooperative Limited organised a cooperative conference at the Coop Marketing Society here on Tuesday. It was presided over by the Assistant Registrar, Coop Societies, Mr Rajinder Singh Chawla.

Tehsildar: Mr Payare Lal took over as Tehsildar here on Tuesday. The post had been lying vacant since long.

Condemned:
Mr Kulwinder Singh Khera, President of the Goindwal Coop Spinning Mill Karamchari Union and other leaders of the union in a press note issued here on Wednesday condemned the suspension of certain mill employees by the Spinfed Punjab for causing losses worth crores of rupees to the spinning mills. The union leaders alleged that no action had been taken against the higher officials of the mill, actually responsible for the losses. They demanded a probe to find out the real culprits.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Southern Sectors Welfare Federation: president — Mr Sukhdev Singh; senior vice-president — Mr Khuspal Singh; vice-president — Mr Chanan Singh; general secretary — Mr Baldev Singh Sarao; and joint secretary — Mr Avtar Singh Bhamra.

Convention: The Federation of UT Employees and Workers will organise a workers' convention from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at Lajpat Rai Bhavan in Sector 15 on Friday, according to Mr Bhag Mal Rana, general secretary of the association.top

HISAR
Traders robbed:
Three unidentified persons robbed about Rs 1 lakh and forcibly took away a Maruti van from some traders on Tuesday, near Sikandarpur village on the Hansi-Bhiwani Road, about 40 km from here. The traders were on their way to Punjab when three car-borne armed men stopped their van and took away the money and the van at pistol point. A case under Section 392 of the IPC and the Arms Act has been registered but no arrest has been made so far.

Sammelan:
A one-day sammelan of the Naujwan Sabha and Mahila Samiti of Begu village was organised at the village school on Tuesday. Speaking on the occasion Ms Reshma Verma, Chairperson of the Mahila Samiti, said the women of the village should unite to solve their problems especially that of water scarcity. A copy of their demands was handed over to Dr Sushil Indora, Indian National Lok Dal candidate from Sirsa (Reserved) Lok Sabha seat and Mrs Vidya Beniwala, MLA, of the area last week.

Power cut: Mr V.K.Garg, Executive Engineer, Haryana Vidyut Parsaran Nigam, Sirsa, while talking to mediapersons here on Wednesday said in order to maintain adequate supply of drinking water in the urban areas the nigam had decided to impose a power cut of one-and-half-hour in the city. The cut will be imposed from 5.30 to 7 a.m. He clarified that the power cut had not been imposed due to the shortage of power but in order to check the use of boosters by people for getting drinking water from pipelines.

Attacked: Mr Jagtar Singh of Mirzapur village in the district was injured seriously when he was attacked by seven persons on Wednesday. The seven suspects and Mr Jagtar Singh had jointly organised a religious function at the village and later they had a dispute over the distribution of funds collected during the function, resulting in the attack.

YAMUNANAGAR
Arrested:
The police has arrested a former employee of the Haryana Police for his alleged involvement in the murder of a woman of Khizrabad, near here. The suspect, Jaipal, allegedly had illicit relations with the woman for the past six years. He reportedly had a fight with the woman a couple of days back and she was found murdered on Tuesday evening at her residence. The police has registered a case under Sections 302, 452 of the IPC.

Grievances redressed:
At least 13 cases out of a total of 44 received, were solved on the spot at a grievances redressal camp held at Dolakharyana village in Dehra subdivision on Wednesday. The camp was presided over by the SDM, Dehra, Mr S.S. Chambyal.

Suicide: An 18-year-old girl of Baliana village near here, committed suicide on Wednesday. The police has registered a case.

Man killed: An octogenarian was allegedly beaten to death over a property dispute in Lag village, near Dadasiba in Kangra district. According to reports Mansaram was killed by his son, Ashok Kumar, on Wednesday, as the former had decided to make changes in his will. The suspect has been arrested.

SOLAN
Declamation contest:
The District Public Relations Office organised a declamation contest under its promotion of temperance campaign at Ghared, in Nalka Panchayat of Dharampur Block on Tuesday. Mr Naresh Kumar Raghuvanshi, Mr Rajendra Pal and Mr Ram Pal got the first, second and third prizes, respectively. Mr Prem Sagar Pal, social worker, distributed the prizes.
